GMax no textures, empty meshes

Hey guys, I am relatively new to GMax (which wasn't an easy program to find). I recently downloaded a pretty nice model from turbo squid to import into the game, but the .3ds file that I imported into GMax appears to be missing front, left, and perspective meshes. Also, the textures aren't mapping. I've included the original file image and a screenshot of GMax.

Any ideas? Thanks! Joe

Try doing a preview render to see how it looks.

It being grey in the viewport could simply mean that the button hasn't been pressed to make the texture visible in the viewport. The button is the blue and white checkered cube near the top of the material editor, which in your case for some reason is greyed out.

I also don't know why the object is only visible in some viewports. My only guess is that the model may be very tiny, or those viewports might be very zoomed out, so that the house is too small to actually see. To test this, you can select the object, and then in the bottom right of the screen there are a bunch of icons related to zoom. If you hover your cursor over them, one of them is "Zoom Extents". This will zoom in the viewport to whatever object(s) you have selected.

Thanks, @Jasoncw I'll give your suggestions a try. I have noticed on TurboSquid a lot of the content doesn't really work straight out of the box, so perhaps I need to get a fullblown version of 3d Studio Max ( you are one of my favorite modders, btw, downloaded lots of your stuff!)

Did the textures come with the model? These are linked as Mats (materials), but not imbedded into the 3DS file. If you have them when loading the file, it should ask for any missing files and you can point them in this direction. If no such dialog appeared, then it suggests the file is released as an untextured model.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

Hi, yeah they came with it but they don't map properly. I see now that there is a disclaimer that while this model works well in Lightwave the textures may not work with the 3ds version. No problem -- but I would love to get an early 18th century cabin as I'm working on a specific theme plugin library.

    Thanks for responding!

It could be a case of simply ‘switching them on’, necessary often in 3DS Max. But as I said, you would have seen a dialog pop up asking for the location of the missing textures if they are part of the file opened.

If not, just apply the textures and if necessary add UV Maps so they appear as desired. That’s relatively straightforward to do, see my YouTube link in my signature. I have a quick video on how to apply textures in gMax (SC4 BAT).
