Adding regions (problem rendering map)

I'm trying to add new regions to my SimCity 4 Delux. I've downloaded the files, added them to the regions folder and hit 'Control, Alt, Shift, R keys' in the game. The folders come up but I can't open 'documents'. Any idea what's happening?

Hi Liz!

Please show us the folder on which you saved the files, it might be that you missed a step to make them work.

Thanks Matt. This is where I saved them and how I did so. Hope you can spot the issue.

Given the size of that region, it would be more convenient to not use the direct import from the grayscale file, but rather to use SC4Mapper. Big grayscale files can take dozens of minutes importing directly.

You can get SC4Mapper here: https://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2880

You'll also need to add this file to the same folder the SC4Mapper executable is installed: https://www.dll-files.com/msvcp71.dll.html

In SC4Mapper, use the Create Region button to select the source files; if you use the grayscale file, select both it and the config.bmp file.

Alternatively, you can use this other Auckland map, which is already formatted for use with SC4Mapper:

Hi @Liz Hayes and welcome to Simtropolis. *:)

I might be able to offer some guidance for the rendering trouble. I've located the Auckland map you've downloaded, which is comprised of the JPG grayscale image, and the config.bmp file too. From your preview pic it all looks good where you've placed those as an Auckland region subfolder.

Rendering this in game should be doable just fine, even though as @matias93 suggested, using the Mapper tool is handy for advantages with rendering large regions.

In the Ctrl+Alt+Shift+R dialog it'll appear at the root of C drive initially.

    This folder right here:

Rendering Map - Wrong Documents Folder.png

This one is the wrong folder, and clicking it does nothing at all. I think this is due to the game looking for an old folder structure back in older Windows systems.

To navigate to the correct Documents folder, this is located inside Users when scrolling down.

Then choose your username, and after that Documents will appear listed.

For example, my Regions path is:
    C:\Users\CB\Documents\SimCity 4\Regions

Then navigate to your Auckland subfolder and then select the .jpg file. It might need clicking off the file and then back onto it again, to make sure the file name is filled out inside the field shown (as in the full Auckland, NZ.jpg name). Upon clicking the OK button, the map rendering processes will begin. As matias said, the render takes a little while for larger maps. Also to make sure this completes properly, it's important not to switch focus from the game while this completes.

From testing this map, it took about 10 mins for it to complete. (This could be more or less depending on your computer's capabilities.)

Here's a preview pic showing what the dialog should look like before clicking the OK button:

Let us know whether this works. If not I'm happy to send the rendered region for you ready to copy in and use. *;)

By the way, an alternative tip is to create a "Maps" folder in the root of C drive. Then it'll appear easily accessible from the rendering dialog initially.
