Blender a free alternative to 3ds Max ?

I'm reading about a free alternative software for 3Dmax, Blender. Anyone aware or this or using it ?

Blender is fairly standard as the open source modeller of choice. The problem is that SC4 isn’t a 3D game. You can’t simply use gMax or 3DS Max any more than Blender to make models for the Isometric views SC4 needs. We have solutions for that in the SC4 BAT (scripts for gMax) and BAT4Max for 3DS Max. Sadly the latter of these no longer works with newer editions of 3DS Max, it needs to be updated. Likewise to be able to use Blender, we’d need an equivalent set that currently doesn’t exist. A project was started by Vortext to do this, but to date nothing usable has been released. Unless that happens, some users may be stuck with gMax (SC4 BAT) for the foreseeable future.

I have looked into something similar, If I remember correctly I went through the whole process chian using blender:
