I've been trying to construct an avenue-based bridge over a body of water in vain. No matter how many times I try, no matter where I try, no matter what "take off" distance I take it does. Not. Work.

Note that this picture was taken after I decided to bulldoze a quarter of the city, because I thought it might get in the way!

I can put a crossing like this only when I make an additional island in the middle of the strait. Which I am not keen on doing. Same road type, same bridge, same grade and "magically" it becomes possible with just an island in between... The game's pure, loathsome malice.

Do you have any idea how I could pull this through without having to damage my terrain? I am SICK of trying to fight the game here!

Bridges don’t really like being drawn over land, only water. Some trickery with the rain tool would probably be possible. But the simpler solution is to manually build embankments and drag from there the bridge instead, so you only drag over water.

I will also add, the use of a slope mod can mess with such things, for example it can happen that you can’t build the bridge in the tutorials because a slope mod prevents the default (intended) placement from working.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

I have made a little mound on the flat shore and it helped indeed. The bridge went right across the strait. Thanks!

You were working at the wrong end of the bridge. The steep land at the other end just wasn't offering an elevation equal to the low flat city end. Building up the flat end was one solution, but flattening some land in front of that sea-cliff would have solved it too.

rsc is on the right track with slope mod. If you customize yours to allow more raising and lowering, and to allow more height difference between bridge ends, then bridges become easier to place. Without a forgiving slope mod, you need to do terraforming yourself so the land at each end is at nearly the same elevation. I like having my computer do work for me, so my personal slope mod is very forgiving.

Remember when editing your "slope mod" that there's a separate exemplar for each network. So after solving your problems with avenues, you'll still need to edit highway, ground-highway, road, and dirt-road (used under RHW) etc so those bridges become easy too. Note: If you make certain parameters especially forgiving, then you'll sometimes be offered bridges / viaducts when dragging over depressions on dry land.
