Re-texture of a workshop asset, need help

Hello everyone,

So I recently figured out how to import/dump assets from the game with mod tools. With that said, I have been able to look at assets more in depth. One such asset is this coast guard cutter asset. Now, as it stands, the asset is great. So are the textures. However, I really would like it to match the coast guard helicopter made by ninjanoob slayer in some ways. One is color.  With that, I know I could achieve the color issue by simply giving it a color mask(I would reley on the painter mod to change it to that color or any other as I would want it to be as versatile as possible) If that is the case, would that require me to simply cut out the areas that I would want recolorable ,  make  a new png file labled  c_maps. and leave it's backround white?.

Also, If I wanted to remove the red stripe, blue stripe and us coast guard writing, could I do that with MS paint?. Tho what would I have to do about the lod?, seeing as that uses a png file with these textures as well. Could that said file be modifed with MS paint as well? Finally, what other file's would I have to change to get this to work properly?.

Hello again ;)

Short answers:

1. Yes, you could achieve something like that with a color map. Name_c.png : Black means not affected, white means affected by color variations. 

    That also requires some testing, because the color affects the diffuse map as well.  

2. Also yes, you can change the diffuse map with any photo/paint software. The Lod textures must be changed accordingly, otherwise the lod will show the old textures. ;)

3. No need to "change" other files, but you have to add a lod color map as well. Name_lod_c.png  Without that file, the color variations won't be seen on the lod model.

    Hello clus, hi again. Man, I thought I was done with this. Guess not. I got the modeling bug I guess=)

    Thank you for answering my questions. I have a couple more issues.

    UPDATE:I have fixed the issues and the asset works!. Thank you again Clus for your help!
