You know how in Google Earth you can hit "R" and reset the camera to point straight down and rotate so North is straight up?

 

I think that would be an awesome and simple mod to add such a key to Cities:Skylines. Would anybody be interested in coding it?

I can add this to my Camera Positions mod, only problem being, where is north? :P

I read somewhere that the game has backward sun ecliptic, should I just set north as normal, with sun rising in the east, or what?

That's a good question!

Maybe just implement both possibilities, as many real world maps have been created with a 180 degrees rotation to account for this (I usually do for my maps, but I may have forgotten once).

    yeah the game messes up the sun position but most of us have fixed that particular problem with mods. Up should be north ofc! (up being up when you look at the sector map)

    On my first try, Alt-R oriented to what I would call "East is Up" ...

    in the tile view, the letters are oriented correctly

    @AmiPolizeiFunk - The Tile view changes direction to whatever the closest cardinal direction to your current camera view is - you can get a tile view from all four cardinal directions.

    Wow you're right! I never noticed that. I worded my point incorrectly then as that tile view really has nothing to do with it.

     

    I made this map with terrain.party, and North should orient the text correctly, as it was in the editor. Also, overlayer is oriented that way as well.

    Just double-checked... it's the same situation with my Berlin map. This is the view after hitting Alt-R, with East being up:

    I made the reset key to face north based on where the sun rises. I can add an option to set where you want the reset button to point you to?

    A button or mod option would be swell and surely the most useful to everybody on each different map! I would be greatly appreciative.

    The new options are great. I'm using Alt-R frequently now. Thx so much for this.

     

    I've noticed that if you "throw" the camera (by this I mean it coasts to a stop), Alt-R does not abort the throw. If you throw the camera (or start an extreme rotation) and hit Alt-R, it will continue coasting to a stop after your press the key. The effect is much more extreme when you are in fullscreen mode ("v"). I think it would be better if it stopped this activity, so that when you hit Alt-R, you are sure to get the cardinal direction that you chose. I don't know if you can make the camera come to a stop, but IMO Alt-R should orient and stop as well as just orient.
