No traffic = broken cities. Why?, well traffic is necessary for C$ buildings to thrive, without a good base of C$, C$$ and C$$$ buildings, you will mess up the whole demand/supply simulation.

The NAM traffic simulator fixes the very broken one Maxis included, so I'd recommend using it.

Editing the SimCity.dat files is a real no, no... he says knowing full well I do it myself from time to time... But the point being, if you don't know what you are editing, prepare to fail, again and again and again.

It strikes me what you are trying to do is alter the way the game works to fit a desire for how you want it to work. Whilst this can be achievable, there are some fundamentals you simply won't be able to work around. The fact is all big cities have a lot of traffic, that's pretty much linked to the population. You can alleviate this a lot by providing excellent public transportation systems, but they must be quicker or sims simply won't care to use them. Not to mention most R$$$ sims prefer to drive, whatever the alternatives. In fact, a good percentage (alterable in the TSCT), will prefer to drive regardless.

Other ways to improve congestion include making better road systems that prevent gridlock. Heavy use of OWRs and higher capacity NWM (from NAM) networks can help. But the real improvements come with a well-planned system which meets the needs of where sims need to come from/go to as efficiently as possible. Often in the SimCity world this requires a willingness to change (rebuild) parts that are not working out.

Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

Welcome to Simtropolis! *:)

When aiming to build urban areas, I've always found it helps to think ahead to where larger transport networks could be built. Since as population density increases, finding land to construct these later on becomes an increased challenge.

Perhaps for some inspiration, an idea is to look at transport maps of real world cities, and try to replicate the layouts. Quite often cities have a central loop of main highways, which branch off and intend to equally distribute traffic throughout the region area. Even with the benefits of NAM, the traffic simulation in SC4 isn't directly comparable to reality, but the basic principles still do apply in parts. Like most things in the game, it does require a lot of trial and error. So perhaps it's worth making regular copies of your region and exploring different methods. That way it's easy to revert back if something doesn't work out.

Also it can help to check the Traffic Data Views, and toggle between the two options. The "Congestion" view is the default and shows the overall quantity for all types of transport, where red is the worst extent of congestion. Then there's the "Volume" view which allows filtering between road traffic, and the 9 other modes of transport. The dots reveal the flow of the traffic in the direction travelled. There's also separate toggles between morning / evening commutes, for when Sims travel to and from work.

For example:

Also using the Route Query tool (Alt + /) can help to show the path taken from specific buildings or networks in a city.

It's nothing special (was actually a test city I created a while back), but the overall population is just under 255k.
