Dumb question about CJ photos

I haven't created a CityJournal as yet but wondered why you can't imbed your photos in the CityJournal the way you can in a forum thread? As in the examples below.

Does it have to do with size? Resolution?  What are the problems with doing it this way?  Since image hosting services are being a royal pain as per CorinaMarie's major hassle.

Any clarification would help with this dumb question.

I have no clue for the cause, but I'm following along to see @Cyclone Boom's answer. *;)

There should be no difference between embedding images in threads and CJ entries. The editor is the same in both locations, along with most areas of the site. Where pasting from a direct link embeds the image, and there's also the ability to upload & attach files directly (as you've done here).

Feel free to create a test CJ if you'd like. *:)

Does this mean that the pictures will stay put, in other words not likely to disappear, if I paste it directly from my album in SC4 as I have done here?  Sorry if I'm being a bit dense, but if this is doable why do others use hosting sites with all the resulting disappearances over time...

Ok I will try doing a CJ  soonish - have to make raspberry jam (being very domestic this week*:)).

Until recently there was a bug with the IPS board software in which attached pics could be placed in position within the text but it also duplicated every single one of them at the bottom of the CJ post. The workaround was to use external hosts. This also had the side benefit of not taking up storage space here on ST. The bug for the attached images has been fixed in one of the updates. (I know it's ok for regular posts as I've done 50 of my most recent pics in threads that way and they are ok.) Since CB says the editor and all is the same for CJ entries, it should be alright now. And as peeps were making those CJs we didn't then know Photobucket was going to pull the rug out from under everyone.

Ooo. Raspberry jam! Sounds yummy. *:)

Yes, attached images are hosted here at Simtropolis, and they're safely stored on the server.

These won't be deleted unless you choose to via your My Attachments list.

The only requirement is anything uploaded must be assigned to a content item. In other words, inserted & submitted just like you've done in your initial post above. The same for CJs or wherever. Otherwise I believe files are considered 'orphaned', and may be scheduled for automatic pruning (deletion) if the system doesn't detect they've been posted. So as long as it's posted somewhere on site, it'll be fine. *;)

Existing uploads are shown in the following menu below the editor:

    Editor Insert Existing Attachments.png

This option allows them to be added to other content items in the same way. They can be searched and more than one added at once.

Attached images can still be resized and linked like regular embedded images by double clicking.

Along with that previous site bug Cori mentioned which rendered the feature unusable, the reason why some have preferred external hosts (e.g. Imgur, Flickr) is because they allow a much larger quantity of images to be stored. Currently here at ST, site storage is limited to 100MB and 4MB per file. So depending on the size uploaded, as a baseline figure you're looking at around about 250 images.

Of course, as we've seen, quantity comes at the cost of durability. Following the rapid demise of Photobucket, I'll be in talks with Dirk our webmaster to see whether it's feasible to raise the quota, or whether there's a more scalable locally hosted solution which can be implemented.

According to the IPS Website if you have the membership subscriptions installed on this site you can set it up to give people  "higher upload limits" when they pay a subscription, I for one would happily pay a yearly subscription if it meant all the pictures I've posted over the years were hosted on Simtropolis, and you could still give everyone a limited amount of free storage so people can post pictures of problems, etc

Oh now I see and understand much better about why people use the hosting services. I didn't know what the limits were.  For the more prolific posters the limit would be a problem. Not so much for myself at the moment but I will look up my attachments to see how much I've posted.

More photo durability would be real nice if that is remotely possible through Simtropolis.  Free is nice but not at the expense of loosing everything.  Time is also money.

Thanks for the information and clarification.

Indeed, that's an option which can certainly be considered.
