Anyone else agree that SimCity 4 Deluxe edition is the best game Maxis has ever made? Of course naturally, this is my opinion :)

Of the Maxis games I've played, yes I agree, it's the best one. Tho in turn SimCity 3000 used to be the best. And before that SimCity 2000. And before that SimCity the Original. *;)

To expound... I personally Maxis out did themselves with SimCity 4 Deluxe edition... In a matter of speaking, the game is still very much alive and well. So, basically, its longevity speaks for itself!

SimCity IV is the foundation and the keystone of the structure of SCI through SCV.   All roads lead back to SC IV.  But we will enjoy SCI, SCII, SCIII, SCV as good colleagues and citizens of the SC World. SC Forever.

Well, again, I would say it's like with books or movies. One book alone, one movie alone - that's too little for an entire life.

If I look back on my life - the interesting thing was, how long it did take to forget what others say. It's been 25 years and more - that's a quarter of a century! - it was this way: when my teachers, my friends, my wife, my professors  said: this is a great book, you must read it, I read it. No, it was even worse - at school, at university, these weren't recomendations, these were commands - I had to read, had to watch. Media was part of education. And so media were used to manipulate me,  to tell me america is good, russia is evil. It even started with childs books: Trees are friendly, lions are agressive. Media gave me measures and values, gave me math and philosophy. My mother - giving me girls books, trying to teach me being her little girl. My father giving me books about fishing and cars, hoping I learn to be a tough guy. Media formed me and giving me media, recommending me media, forcing me to use media - this was to form me as they wanted me to be.

That's what I can't stand about STEAM - how they try to tell me: this is the right game for you, you'll love it, as soon as I start my computer. They want to control my playing the same way as my parents used to control my readings - by making offers and being the main channel for offers. STEAM tries to be the 'computer game parent'.

You know, on books - this is great. There are collections and libraries almost everywhere. I'm living at Heidelberg, with an university founded in the middle ages. There are institutes they have f.e. collections of medical books 200 years old. Books long forgotten, no one will recommend to read. And so maybe 90% of the books written no one will recommend you to read - and the games and the movies - and you have to go out out and hunt for them and to find them yourself. That's the only way to get freedom of mind - mistrust recommendations find yourself the media. And never when you have grown up and are adult - read, watch, play what is meaningless to you. If I get a nobel prize winners book I read the first pages and if they are annoying I read some pages in the middle and if it's still anyoing I throw it away. Others will tell: you didn't read it? Oh, you missed something. You will remain ignorant. But no. That's only an argument to sell books. There is absolutely no truth in this - that you remain stupid if you don't read this or that book. Most of the time you need different explanations by different people - so to have many of them is good even if they tell you to listen only to that single one, that they call 'the best' explanation. No! Why not listen to some more? Don't trust this 'best of all' stuff at all.

I would guess: 99,999% of the world don't play SC4. And they don't miss anything. Still - they might be lucky people. It's totally unimportant how important SC4 is/was for the genre. It's totally unimportant how influential this game was. How inventive, how clever. It's still possible to have a good life without it.

I think that's the most important thing today - to be able to go out and find yourself the books, films, games you want to read, see and play. The techniques of finding and judging media is much more important than recommendations, commercials and offers. To be able to recognize qualities, sense and importance, creativity. You know, public opinion focusses on a few things while there are millions out there in the world to discover.

There is no public opinion about the IRM or the NAM outside of this community.

So the funny thing is: if you ask this community what do you think about the NAM, you'll get euphoria if you ask on a forum on counter strike - you'll get ignorance.

This is totally arbitrary. You're just asking the right people the right thing to get the desired answer.

There is no best game. As there is no best wife or best husband.

You choose. And the game you play is always the best game. And if the game you play isn't the best one - then you are doing something wrong. But it's you, not the game, doing wrong.

So think on SC2013 - disappointment can only be where expectations are.

From where came those expectations? Research this - and you might get closer to the source where the 'best game ever' comes from.

As all media are only light, sound, symbols - physical impulses to our nerves. And from this - ' a game' - as a complex whole - originates in our brains.

Once somebody said 'There aren't two people who can read the same book:' As everybody reads it different. And the same with games. Everybody creates his own version while playing. So, looking on the city Journals - they are tools for creativity, to stimulate your brain to create stuff - landscapes, cities, sceneries. On one person this tool may work better than on another. What's the right tool for you to be creative? Don't let public opinion decide that!

    You choose. You make it.

Well, that's not a merit of Maxis, because the Maxis Studios are dead and as @SimCoug already mentioned, they totally messed up SC 2013. No, it's not dead, because of this awesome community... It has become the best game, since this community fixed a lot of game bugs, ähm features, this game came with and enhanced it with new mods like NAM, CAM, IRM and thousands of wonderful new buildings! Thank you all for your hard work to keep this old game running!

    Kind regards!

For me Sc4 is the best, followed by Sc3k. I like the way SimCity 3000 looks visually.

There was a game called Sim Life from Maxis.  I thought it was a pretty interesting introduction to genetics, populations, and selection pressures.

Of course, it was not SC4.

I look at SC4 and games like Sim Life as products of the golden age of gaming.  When the budgets didn't exceed Hollywood blockbusters.  Teams were small.  Lots of independents.  Entire new genres were being conceived.

People were doing truly innovative stuff, not simply porting board games to computers.
