I just finished constructing this.  Was there a better option?  This is to be for a central hub tile.

Thanks?

PS:  I am not proud of myself, but I could think of nothing else.

Hmm... isn't it possible to use GHSR (ground high-speed rail) as well? I'm asking because I wouldn't use a 4-way crossing on a high-speed rail line at all, only regular switches.

This page is for another game - Transport Tycoon - but contains a list of 4-way junctions (let's face it, your 8-way is actually a 4-way with each of the 4 ways branching an additional time), but the basic junction patters may serve as an inspiration for SimCity as well (be sure to click through the different 4-way variants).

Especially with high-speed rail, you'll probably want to use far more space to accommodate for smooth, wide-radius curves, though - at least if you go for realism to some extent.

Something along these lines would be nicer IMO:

East to West this ends with L2 HSR, North to South you get L0 G-HSR, but you could use transitions to get that back to L2 if needed. Smart use of terrain height differences will help make this look realistic too.

One thing that often annoys me when I see peoples HSR networks is where the curves are de-stabilised, which I see in both pictures above. That's not an error, but intended behaviour, HSR was designed not to allow tight curving and points next to each other. If this happens when building, you should re-evaluate your build and move switches/points/curves as needed until the pieces all connect smoothly without bumps and glitches.

Sure a three way switch would be a useful addition for this kind of setup, but frankly such setups in the real world are very rare for HSR lines. If routes split in multiple directions, typically a station will be somewhere in the middle.

HSRSplit_zpsshvk4ikb.jpgAbove the lines in Purple show my HSR network in a large city tile. I'm using a customised version of Tsadu's HSR station which re-purposes two lines for use with Viaduct Rail, so the station becomes a hub between Rail and HSR users. Between the HSR lines that split (West & East), you'll find this hub station. This setup produces the effect you are after much more cleanly and realistically. Note red lines show the rail network.

On the right here is one of the branchs (on the right in the above picture), I've connected both sides this way so that trains could theoretically bypass the station and switch from one branch to another if so desired.

But it's worth remembering that HSR is not like a typical rail line, they are dedicated high-speed passenger lines that are very costly to build. So lines running everywhere simply doesn't happen, like it might with a regular rail network.

Just in case anyone is interested, I'll attach a copy of the station LotFile here, you'll need these files from Tsadu's original package to use it:

  • tds11_HSR_Lstation-0x6534284a-0xd53af1d5-0xb5991aea.SC4Desc
  • tds11_HSR_Lstation-0x5ad0e817_0x958dd53f_0x30000.SC4Model

You can keep both stations installed though, it doesn't overwrite the original. If you aren't sure which lines are for the Viaduct Rail system, just drag monorail through each platform, those where you can't do this are Viaduct Rail, those you can are HSR. The station is symmetrical so you can place it to have the HSR on whichever side you choose too.

Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.
