Highways and Intersections

In my city, which is fairly small, at only 70-ish thousand population, I have been having a traffic nightmare at one of my intersections.

The cars randomly stop in the middle of the 3-lane highway, creating traffic jams that stretch all the way to the high-rise area sometimes.

It's not even that big an area, it's about two times smaller than my high-rise area, and is simply industry, commercial, and low-density residential. Pictures attached.

So I have only one question to ask: whatdo?

I've noticed the same brain-dead merging behavior with my Cims (especially since the last DLC/update - I had some bottle necks before, but since that update traffic's been a nightmare - and it's not because of the increase in tourism, I'm sure), messing up traffic flow in places where, with a detectable AI, traffic should be heavy but fluid. Although traffic mods like Traffic Manager or Traffic++ may help a little bit, ultimately there's not a whole lot you can do about it I'm afraid. So I decided to simply ignore it - why bother getting annoyed about something, or rebuild half your city when the problems lies with something you can't really control?

That's the problem. It seems to only happen on roads connecting to that specific godforsaken AREA!!!!!!
I mean, it does happen less on the six-lane one-way roads, but then the cars decide to merge lanes like there's no tomorrow. I think the only possible thing I can do is have three two-lane one-ways coming out in different directions, and then the middle one split into two highways?

I tried something similar and it obviously didn't work.
