Starting from existing village / town

One thing that I don't like (from SC4 to C:S) is starting completely from scratch, placing roads and zoning onto empty plains.

I would love to start from a village or a town. Are there any maps for C:S that provide something similar?

We can also discuss this idea.

My reasons for this need:

  • Realism: creating cities from scratch is an exception, not the norm. Cities evolve with time. I don't care about simulating other epochs, I just want to start from an existing city.
  • Fun / challenge: it's more fun and challenging to start from an existing town because it forces yourself to keep its existing elements (one should role-play to avoid - or at least limiting - bulldozing.

Towns could have an existing story which comes with the map.

Little towns could be based on agriculture, and you may change this during the course of the game, with generations passing, ecc.

This of course is for those who care more about gameplay than city design.

Like with how there's almost 10k savegames available on the workshop you mean? Unfortunately you'd have to go looking for one you really like (and that's built with the same assets you have/strictly vanilla), but the functionality is there.

Exactly, I've thought about "savegames" but I've only looked in ST Exchange, and it only had "Maps".

Most are probably big cities but with so many files I guess I'll find what I'm looking for, thanks for the link.

Well one thing I've noticed, and I'm sure I'll not be the only one here, is that almost nothing gets uploaded to STEX compared to the Steam Workshop. For all those people who are legally running the game it's just too convenient to stay in-system.

I see nothing wrong with that. Running the STEX is quite expensive for Simtropolis. While the Workshop is not perfect, it provides automatic updates and a subscription management system.

Back on topic: With the Advanced building mod, it is possible to place normal roads and even buildings like airports and harbors in the map editor.

It really helps me to start with an avenue instead of one of those unrealistic highway exits.

I think I would like a little town of 2'000 citizens, full of agricultural zones.

Then you would not change the existing buildings very much, and you would build new houses only in empty areas around the small town. Then if you want to have little towns all around you could use districts and pretend they're other little towns. Or you could make a single high density city but manteining the original town, maybe moving the center of the city, etc. There are various options; the important thing is not starting from scratch.
