Tick-tock I'm a clock.

Some people wouldn't know a bomb from their socks.  If the Americans are all that jerky, then the terror campaign is successful.

The worst part is that they wanted to prosecute him for having a 'hoax bomb'. So basically he would be prosecuted when he didn't make a bomb and didn't pretend to have made a bomb, but because others are to stupid to recognize a homemade clock.

it all about them( the school and Police) saving face cause they completely overreacted to this event . so they do what they can to persecute a young kid even though they probably know it would back fire. i mean their not that stupid are they? in todays climate when everything is over analyzed and over reacted then had to know this would blow up in thier face if they perused it.

All that English teacher had to do was ask "What do you have there?" and to have listened to the reply.

Rather inappropriate for the kid to bring a conglomeration of circuit boards to school, but he has to learn that lesson somewhere or what are schools for?  Certainly not for panic reactions and tempests in teacups.  Maybe this is part of the 'entitlement syndrome' -- "Protect me, I am too stupid to ask questions".

How this "teacher" ever got hired is a really good question.

Sounds like they wanted to punish him for their stupidity. That's nothing new...

Now he is having his fifteen minutes of fame.

If he gets funding and admission to MIT, I think he will have achieved his wildest dream.  Funny what stupidity on the part of "authority" will get you sometimes.

At the same time, think of all the people who also build clocks, show them off to their teachers, but have the good fortune/bad luck to deal with teachers who aren't complete idiots and who don't call the police and which doesn't end in a national media storm. Do they get an invitation to go to the White House? To hang out at Facebook or Google?

This is a textbook example of zero tolerance in our school system.  Of course, asking questions and listening are smart — so it's no wonder at all that the teacher didn't do either of those.

There is no doubt that the whole school, the principal and the school board should be up for review on competence.  Causing a nation wide kerfuffle isn't what schools are supposed to be about.  Isn't it lucky that these teachers were not armed?

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

Teachers in this country think they are so superior to their students that when a student corrects them on a mistake the teach made, they get their panties all knotted and create a lot of problems for the student.  Like detention, insubordination, giving bad grades, giving said student a hard time and all for being corrected by a mere student.  Idiot teachers like that should not be anywhere near a school teaching the young.  And if any of you think that's hyperbole, don't even bother to tell me that doesn't happen, because it does and I've seen it, went through it and watched my son go through it.

Agreed.  Before i was retired, I was a college teacher.  I've often had students argue with me, and sometimes they were right.  When that happens, we both learned something, and I am the first to admit that I don't know everything, and never did know everything.  Sometimes, I think teachers live in fear of being caught in an error.  If they are, it is often of their own making.  This one was a doozy.

A day when you don't learn something is a bust.

That's the old adage is it not?  You learn something new everyday?  Obviously, this teacher never learned that lesson.

If they really believed it was a bomb, wouldn't they have called the bomb squad and evacuated the school?

A good question that several people have been asking. The most common conclusion seems to be that they didn't actually believe the device was a bomb, but they felt threatened by the idea of a Muslim boy building electronic devices in his home and deemed it necessary to give him a thorough interrogation to make sure he's not a terrorist. Because in the paranoid mindset of the kneejerky security state, a 14-year-old boy named Ahmed doing something highly extraordinary for a 14-year-old boy is suspicious and demands investigation.

Some people, and not all of them are teachers, have a style of leading a group that involves firmly establishing their authority and swiftly stamping out any attempt to undermine it. To someone like this, it is irrelevant whether the disagreeing subordinate is correct or not. Their willingness to speak up and disagree is out of line and must be stopped.

These sort of people are horrible to deal with no matter what position of authority they may be in. And yes, I'd say you are correct - they are living in fear of losing control of a situation and don't know how to maintain order without an iron fist.

I think authority and discipline are needed in schools but students are correct and teachers not some times.

I think students should respect good teachers and not complain if they throw a rock at a window and get beaten for it.

But teachers must also be able to accept they are wrong, and though I only attended school for a few years I often had to correct my teachers on points.

I think it is silly in this instance because if a student was planning a terror attack they would hardly show off their bomb, they would conceal it.

I signed a petition on change.org to force the school to apologise for their silly behaviour towards the clockmaker boy.
