Is it just me or have they been bad and getting worse lately? I've got a good broadband connection but it takes me forever to open the forums and I get loads of timeouts...

There has to be some extra security on the site because of the trouble with the viruses lately. There are 2 choices- Wait a little bit longer and be secure OR get infected with viruses and do everything a little faster. It's your choice...

The reason, or one of them, is there are currently about 300 people viewing the site, 100 members logged on, some of which might also be uploading.

Yes, many errors have been occuring lately... not nessecary longer time then usual for me, but just many error and weird happenings. Like my sig was in my post a few days ago (not in it's normal place)... And I believe I've gotten a few Trojan programs from here...

It is amazingly slow! Just to view this thread took about 5 minutes, and I have ADSL and its usually quite quick. Makes replying to threads a long ordeal..

I've been having the sama problems as everyone else.  It's really frustrating when you reply to a thread and it disappears and leaves you with an error message.  I've taken to making copies of my posts in clipboard before hitting the submit button.  If it disappears then I can just repaste it instead of typing the whole thing out again.10.gif

It could also be that the server isn't big enough, since the site run on donations.

I wonder if adding a RAM board or 2 would speed up the forum server...

The STEX is fast, why can't the forums be fast as well?

I've been wondering that since October.  But everytime that I start to think that dirk's servers are getting overloaded, something comes along and starts working really fast.46.gif

SamFlash: I likewise have been doing that.  In fact, I'll be doing that on this post too.41.gif

SamFlash, thats why i use firefox because unlike IE when you hit the back button, it saves the text you wrote in. Very handy! I remember using IE I lost an entire update of my CJ! Gah! 20.gif

Voar Toks avatar is replaced by the up arrow, all of the 1.gif smilies are pictures of a boeing jet, which really screws things up.

I think dirk should make the forums invisible to non-registered users to keep anonymous traffic down, and probably go in and take that stupid virus out. this is getting annoying.

I have actually considered leaving until it's fixed. Oh, wouldnt admin love that?!9.gif

I think I have worked out the reason everyone is getting errors a lot more than normal. The site has slowed down so much that it takes so long to load something the surver's automatic timeout overide kicks in stopping the loading to keep the surver running smoothley.

A immediate solution would be to extend the allowed loading time but this could overwelm the surver so the best solution is to get a bigger surver but that costs money so I better get on and donate.

I have cable internet, but almost wasn't possible to use the forums yesterday... Every page took forever to load, while my internet was fine for the rest. When I saw this thread, I wanted to post in it. But I couldn't even do that! After 2 minutes of waiting (yes, really that long) the page opened. I typed a reply and did submit it, but then I got the time-out error twice. Then I just gave up 15.gif

Fortunately the forums are accessable again now.

Personally, I've noticed no slowdown, and I very much doubt that any speed reduction is due to security problems.

I think so in my theory, as more visitors come in, the more busy it gets, and the slower it gets. It's saturday morning in London now, and even earlier at Toronto, Canada.

Visit at 2 in the morning you wont have nearly as many problems with speed.

“The American city should be a collection of communities where every member has a right to belong. It should be a place where every man feels safe on his streets and in the house of his friends. It should be a place where each individual's dignity and self-respect is strengthened by the respect and affection of his neighbors. It should be a place where each of us can find the satisfaction and warmth which comes from being a member of the community of man. This is what man sought at the dawn of civilization. It is what we seek today.”

The slow down is not as much as a mystery as you think.  Besides the amount of traffic the site gets, it is the sizes of the Avatars, and signatures.  When members create these very large sized images it is inconsiderate of other members, and guest.  Consider how many times the images are loaded everytime a page is viewed.  Some animated signature images are 1MB and larger.  The same with the animated avatars,  that are 2 or 3 hundred Kbytes.  Compare that to the converstion text on a page, a whole page probably won't amount to more than double digit KBytes.
