Port Maria

Recently, a new coal vein was found in the region up river.  As a result, a group of entrepeneurs decided to build a coal power plant down river in a low flat area good for shipping in coal from the mine up river.  The decision was made to build the power plant right on the docks to facilitate bringing coal in without other transportation required.  With a new power plant came new jobs; a town formed close to the power plant: Port Maria.  Port Maria is named after a local native matriarch from years ago who lost her life defending her tribe from foreign intrusion.  The foreigners never returned, but most of the native tribe migrated with very few natives from Maria's tribe left in the area.  However, enough remained to tell the story today.

Nice layout for the power plat. I tend to lay railway tracks next to them but a small harbour makes sense in your region.
Just the parling lot is a bit too big IMHO because in modern (at least in european) Powerplant there aren't a lot of people working - everything automated ...

I'm not sure if it is just me, but I can't see your photos. Judging by everybody else's replies, I'm sure it is pretty good! 44.gif

    nycsc4, chocolatemax285, tag_one: Thanks for the encouragement.

    Nardo69: Yeah, I agree with you about the parking lot.  But, I didn't have a lot of choices.  I think I am going to revamp the power plant layout since I ran into some logistical problems with it after the city began.  Also, as railroads develop (and to what extent) in the region, who knows what the most cost-effective method of transporting may be? 2.gif

    Nardo69: I changed the power plant so that my security checkpoint allowed traffic in and had some streets to carry traffic (no traffic in previous setup).  Also, I toned down the size of the parking lot as you suggested.

    Stewy13: Well, the parking lots that WERE there before I changed them were the NDEX parking lot, found here:

    Mogul: Thanks.

    Update 1

    Now that all the logistical problems with the power plant 2.gif have been worked out, the city of Port Maria is growing:
    <ahttp://img455.imageshack.us/img455/2638/growing8ik.jpg align=baseline>

    Once the city built the mayor a house, he immediately commissioned a park to be built, conveniently located right next to his house:
    align=baseline>

    The city growth attracted new industry.  Since there are no rails or major highways heading out of the city, these new industry decided to lease dock space from the power plant.  And, they built nearby with a street leading directly to the power plant gate so that their trucks would not have a far drive to the docks.  The power plant was happy to get the dock lease payments, and hired some extra security guards for the front gate to handle the added traffic.  The mayor was happy since there were jobs being created and pollution was kept away from the city's neighborhoods:
    <ahttp://img455.imageshack.us/img455/1746/industrydocks3lv.jpg align=baseline>

    Another industry decided to build on the north side of town, which worried the mayor, since he felt the pollution it was producing was a bit too close to the northeast neighborhoods of the city.  Mayor Fiden got a new idea to build a bridge to that undeveloped island to the west.  Hmmm, maybe we can make the island particularly desirable to new industry.  That way we can keep pollution away from my new park and city recreation docks:
    align=baseline>

    What schemes will the mayor cook up next?

    I like the power plant also, especially the use of the gate.  Your town itself's up and coming, though, and it's a bit premature to judge.  You probably made a good decision, however, giving up entire blocks for parkland.  If the city really grows, that'll give the city a nice visual touch.

    Both updates look very good. I've never been a fan of coal power plants (since that seems to be the major topic of conversation here), but they are very common in RL and you've done yours quite well. On another front, I'm not sure if you downloaded that expanded Mayor's lot from the STEX or made it yourself, since a lot of Mayor's House lot permutations have been floating around both here and at the official site. Either way, it looks near perfect in context, especially with the park around it. Nice work.

    Micah:  Oh no.  I thought the problem was fixed when I moved from geocities to imageshack for my pic hosting.  Does anyone else have a problem with my pics?  What if you paste the links directly into your browser?  Try pasting this link in your browser (or just shift left click on it) and let me know what happens:

    pickled_pig, tag_one: Yeah, I love using any lots that can be linked together using your own imagination to come up with the whole, rather than plopping the whole thing in one swoop.  Plus, you can really create a contrast to all the sqaure stuff in the rest of the game.

    jacqulina: Thank you for the kind words.  I'll try to keep the nice stuff coming.

    Equilibria: Wow, you think it looks nearly perfect?  Thank you.  The mayor's house is just the stock maxis house with jeronij's park pack lots surrounding it.  In case you are interested, you may get them here:

    Hopefully, I'll have another update tonight as long as some interesting things occur in the region.2.gif

    Update 2

    (Sorry for the long hiatus)
    Much has happened in Port Maria over the last forty years.  The city has expanded quite a bit to the north. across the river to the west and a little to the east (the higher elevations to the east has postponed growth).  With the introduction of a rail line along the coast from the north, much of the old industry relocated and new industry moved in nearby the new line and freight yard.
    <ahttp://img242.imageshack.us/img242/8025/pmyear436xj.jpg align=baseline>

    Commerical development has overtaken much of the historic residential district, however the mayor's house with nearby park, historic homes and upscale waterfront shopping remains.
    <ahttp://img332.imageshack.us/img332/2709/y43historicwaterfrontmedium4vl.jpg align=baseline>

    A view of North Park and surrounding houses.
    <ahttp://img332.imageshack.us/img332/4062/y43northparkmedium7fy.jpg align=baseline>

    Developers had an eye toward the Mayor's Roundabout.  Right now, we are on the cusp of new developments.  The main impetus for the new development was the building of the fences and trees to keep the railroad away from the residents.
    <ahttp://img332.imageshack.us/img332/4951/y43mayorsroundaboutmedium9sv.jpg align=baseline>

    Look for the city's residential districts to keep expanding north, while industry will likely remain to the west and along the railroad, and commerce will continue to overtake old neighborhoods.
