Well, I saw the Adult Swim thread so I figured I'd make an anime thread. There are a few people with anime signatures and avatars floating around, any more fans?

I've been watching anime since 1996. Wow, almost 10 years now. I often like some of the older stuff as well as the new. Living in Japan exposed me to a lot of stuff that isn't available in North America.

geeze Zelgadis, you own alot of stuff. I have around 50 DVD's and around 30 VHS. I buy most of my stuff when it's on mega-sale. For example, I got around 15 VHS of Patlabor for $10. It took 2 months for me to get around to watching them all.

I forgot to list Armitage III. It was also one of the first I ever got. I have the OVA versions. The Polymatrix movie leaves out too much.

There's more that I have that I haven't even mentioned here.

I remember when AnimEigo was getting rid of all their laserdiscs to make way for the DVD's. I had a field day.

Anyway, I've been collecting for quite a long while now. So I naturally have built up a lot of items. I also have an extensive anime cel collection. I have around 200 now, many of which I have framed.

I have over 50 mangas,but I only have two DVDs...One is Lupin the 3rd Castle of Calligstro and the other is a rather bad Yu Yu Hakusho movie....

Anyway for anime i like....I have a rather long list since I've been wacthing anime since I was 5 or 6 which would make it about 12 to 13 years now....

Yeah I know I got more,but I have a bad memory....

 

For Manga I have 20 volumes of GTO....Cowboy Bebop manga I have about 7....4 of those being Cowboy Bebop Shooting Star.I also have an anime guide to Bebop at 7 volumes...I have Gundam manga at about 10 volume and Island is a horror manga and thats 7 volumes too....

 

I have FlCL manga at 2 volumes...I have about 55 manga total....but I think I have at least a little more then that....

0080 (It's ok)

0080 is the best gundam series! Sometimes it can be a little slow, but imo it's the most meaningful, realistic, and focused Gundam series there is. Plus Yutaka Izubuchi did the mech designs.

Imo, all of the gundam series are twice as long as they need to be. There are too many events and battles that don't really add anything to the quality of the show. They'd be better if they were only 26 episodes. Or maybe even a long OVA. Plus imo most of the politics are unrealistic, and the characters motiviations and actions aren't very logical. imo 0080 has the least of these problems, although I don't know of any 26 year olds who are such good friends with 10 year olds.

But what I think would be awesome is if the creative staff at Production I.G. made a gundam movie or OVA. Either in UC or a new, less cartoony AU. Unfortunatly I think Seed is supposed to be the new UC, but I could go on for a long time about Gundam stuff so I'll stop.

Urusei Yatsura is still one of the best. The modern anime world owes a lot to this old, Rumiko Takahashi gem.

Manga are comic books and anime is cartoons.

You could make an anime with a scanner/digital camera, adobe photoshop, a computer microphone and a video editor. I made a cartoon for my French class which was a minute and 32 seconds. It took alot of work and it didn't turn out that great, but imo it's still an achievment. But using the same process and having more animation skill it would be possible to make low-end tv quality anime.

You also need to buy a peg bar and hole puncher. It's a bar with three pegs on it, with corresponding holes on the paper that make sure everything lines up. You also use it to align the paper on the scanner or camera set-up.

You then animate everything on computer paper. Then you ink everything on the computer paper, or you ink it with a light table onto a new piece of paper.

Then you scan it in, and color it with photoshop. Then you import all of the frames into your video editing program, record the voices and sound effects and import those in, and then you edit the video together. You could also animate the frames with a mouse or pen tablet into photoshop, but it's harder than using paper.

To have an episode profesionally done it would cost around $120,000...

I think my first that I owned was Akira (if that counts). Both my brother and sister liked anime and each one occasionally got their hands on a video to watch and depending on what it was I watched too. I'm having trouble thinking of anything earlier or less well known. 8th grade ('01-'02) was my first year into 'real' anime and when I considered myself an anime fan. I just found a list I made of animes I had seen that was last updated in 2002 and it has more on it than I thought. If I was still keeping track I guess right now would be another big growth in the list, becuase I started college and the anime club has a big rental section and they play anime weekly, unfortunatly I wouldn't call anything I watched their that great except for Genshiken. Most of my list of favs. was established by 03. Sorry to tell my lifestory

One of my friends tried to get me into Anime. I've seen two episodes of Inuyasha and one and a half of FLCL. FLCL is one messed up show. I still don't really care for Anime.

I don't really like Inuyasha. FLCL is full of cultural references that makes the show incredibly clever. It can be appreciated on a 'look, that's crazy' level and a more sophisticated level too. I think that furi kuri itself is japanese slang for boob groping (that particular point doesn't make it sophisticated, it just shows that there is more to the show than the casual viewer thinks).

imo, people clump anime into a big group as if it were a genre or something (anime fans do this alot too). Watching two or three episodes from a few random american series on tv doesn't represent all of american movie and tv making, just as watching a few episodes from some random animes doesn't represent all of that.

I'm watching Full Metal Panic (Series 1), Full Metal Panic Fumoffu (redefines anime humour IMO) and Full Metal Panic The Second Raid (Series 2). I also watch Bleach (AWESOME!!)

 

I'm gonna get some more series recommended to me by friends who watch pretty much every anime series there is. Is FMA any good btw?? I'm also looking for some action/humour series, not jus pure action. Any recommendations??

Trigun, Samurai Champloo, and FullMetal Alchemist seem like good shows but I don't have cable anymore so I've only seen one or two episodes. Ghost In the Shell was OK but there wasn't much substance to it.

Dragonball and Gundam IMO sucked. What series number are they even on now? 21? 3,010? The first seasons/series were okay but after about 10 years of rehashing the same storyline and plot, it's like beating a dead horse. It's like the director's thought Hey, let's trot out every anime cliche in the past 20 years, wrap it into a show with lots of explosions and little dialogue, and see who buys it.

Well...thinking about it, MOST anime sucks. Very rarely does a series come along that really challenges itself and its viewers and doesn't trot out the same tired song and dance.

Only two or three Gundam series owned....I mean like tottally kicked ass....There was 0080 War in the Pocket,G Gundam and Gundam 0079....

 

I know G Gundam is kinda for kids,but imagine how nations could get things done if we had such a system working for us....A worldwide battle for rule over everyone...it'd be the next best thing to world peace....

 

Now Gundam 0079 had poor animation,but this was made in the 70's...aside from that the story is golden and the caracthers are the snaps...

 

DBZ is kinda crappy,but nothing is as bad as DBGT....talk about beating up a dead horse....actaully that isn't cool...my teacher's horse died today....

 

Then there's Cowboy Bebop...in my opinion the BEST Sci Fi anime in the last 10 years easy!!!!!

 

I love the plot and each and every episode I've seen atleast 20 times....Man even the Mushroon Shamba episode still gets me laughing....but yeah all in all a kickass series...

 

The Movie aswell....Cowboy Bebopknocking on Heaven's Door is a masterpiece amoung other movies....well action anime movies that is...

 

I also love GTO cause its so funny....

 

FLCL is back on Cartoon Network at 12:30 if anyone is waiting to see it again...plus it is super funny and confusing....

 

Lupin the 3rd is also funny and full of action.The animation may be old,but it adds to the charm of the show itself...

 

More great shows....

but it is true alot of animes suck so beware and watch what you like...If you like actiopn go for action and comedy go for Comedy....

Well, I'm not a big fan of Anime.

But, the closest thing to anime that I like shows in my avatar. It is this really sick and violent comic book from the mid 90's by Jhonen Vasquez. It is called Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. I suggest you google it. Who knows. You might end up enjoying it.

The Animies I like are:

1) Fullmetal Alchemist -- Funny at times, and its a very good show.

2) Inuyasha -- Very interesting

 

The Animies I don't like are:

 

1) Pokemon -- I don't mean to be rude, but this show is not good in my opnnion

2) S-Cry Ed -- I don't like the concept.

 

* When I was younger, I used to watch Pokemon, and Digimon, However I am 18 now, and when I was in middle school, I stoped watching Animies all together.  But When I watched Adult Swim, I saw the shows (Above in red and blue) for the first time, the concept of the shows were very interesting,  so I started watching them. However I only watch those shows on the weekends because, they come on so late durring the week and I wake up really early to go to school.  The only exception is when I am off of school. When I started watching S-Cry Ed, I did not like it so I stopped watching it.

 

* The thing is some animies are really bad and deserve to be off the air, but the ones I like are really good and should still stay on the air.

Well, seeing as the more interesting Bleach arc finished last week, does anyone know where I can get X ?? *Ahh!! He's talking about...'YOU KNOW WHAT'!!

Please note, this isn't some code word for anything...questionable, to put it mildly. X is an anime series. All I want to know is whether or not it's still available for download or whether it's been licenced yet.

 

Speaking of which, can anyone recommend short (less than 24 episodes), nice animes?? Any help would be appreciated. Ikorose Shinsou!!! Go Ichimaru Gin!!

Grobulous: JTHM was excellent. I prefered Squee though and I Feel Sick wasn't bad. You migh also like Bear by Jamie Smart from SLG. Same type of black humor. Although, I don't think these count as anime necessarily.

 

But, Invader Zim might qualify. Now that was a GREAT show! If anyone here hasn't seen it, go out and rent the series on DVD (it's only 3 since Nick cancelled the series because it wasn't stupid enough for kids). I know that Blockbuster carries it. (I'm also BATting some of the buildings from this as well).

 

But what happened to Jhonen??? He's dropped of the face of the earth since IZ's cancellation.
