Skylines

I have been looking at various YouTube videos and screenshots but I haven't really seen any eye-catching skylines yet. I mean, high density zones don't really seem to have that impressive towering look to them. Has anyone else noticed this? Most of you will probably agree that the downtown business districts stood out like nothing else in SC4. I somehow get the impression that skylines just blend in with the rest of the city in Cities: Skylines. Don't get me wrong, the game looks amazing but this has been troubling me a little.

At some point in the future I will likely pick the game up, since most of the images look pretty good.  But I am a skyline CBD kinda guy and I definitely hope to see a wider (and taller) variety of residential and commercial mid & high rises.

Can't do bigger buildings on the ridiculously small 4x4 lots that are all you get in this game.  Everything from a single modest house to a factory or shopping mall or skyscraper or farm is all supposed to use the same modest lot size in C:SL-land!!!  How they managed to overlook that feature of SC4 when they copied 99% of the rest of it is beyond me.

Are you limited in lot sizes when it comes to custom creations?

Growable lots are currently limited to 4x4 yes. Ploppable stuff like landmarks can go bigger.

hmm this is a real bummer. In some ways it really helps to plan a city and such because you can pretty much be assured all the buildings will be the same variable size, but it also has the downside of making things all look very similar. I guess having ploppable super large buildings is okay, since you really won't have a ton of them in your city. I can imagine manually plopping 5 or so large buildings in my city.

Well, there are smaller buildings of course. For example, you get pencil towers on 1x1 lots.

A lot of hype about the game. It is a great sound foundation with lots of (yet unrealised) potential that could make it a colossus of the genre.

The rush to gushing OTT praise is no different to the extreme loathing and bile that continues to malign SimCity 2013. Seems we can't get a rational balanced consensus - everything has to be at the extreme end of the spectrum.

SimCity 2013 has a lot to commend it- certainly a more polished product, a day/night cycle and modular civic buildings and services, easier to read info panels that look so much better in terms of their clean crisp design. There is certainly more of an emphasis on the GAME aspect of SC2013.

Comparing Skylines to SC4 is in my view kinda pointless. SC4 is over a decade old- it's yesterdays technology- was great in it's time and still has some merit- but try going back to it after a few hours on Skylines- it's like trading in your HD TV for a 12inch B&W set- no comparison!

SC4 will limp on for a long time but as Skylines develops watch SC4 players jump aboard leaving only a rump of diehard players.

Skylines offers those amazing large maps, embraces modding and allows greater control over the placement of assets. It has taken elements of SC4, CiM 1&2 and some SC2013, combining them to create a good basic product.

With regards to "which" game- Why does it have to be "either or", can't it be "all"?

I like both SC2013 and Skylines, I might also nostalgically drop by now and again to see how my old friends are in SC4

I just need or two ploppable supertalls to complete my skyline. I'm not looking to build Dubai here, but it would nice if that could be possible in the future for those that are.

How does your point relate to this discussion on CBD zoning?

The good news is there are already a handful of very nice ploppable skyscrapers in the workshop, after only a week. Some are very tall even compared to the landmark towers in the game, and I've been able to make a nice little CBD cluster in my city. SC4 was pretty much the same way, the default skyscrapers were pretty wimpy compared to the BATs that came along and I usually ended up plopping most of my tallest buildings anyway. The 4x4 growable limit is kind of sad but at this point who knows what might be moddable.

So the growable limit is 4 (right now), how do custom buildings work right now? Can you make both plopable and growable?  I have been pondering the future of SC4 myself lately and certainly am in the same boat with those that think eventually more and more folks from SC4 will move over to Skylines as the game develops--myself being one of them.  There will always be a core dedicated group that remains solely with SC4 though, which is awesome--play the city simulator that works for you!  Kinda bummed though; I rediscovered and "conquered" SC4 after wrestling with it since it came out to build the city of my dreams only to finally do so late in its popularity growth.  I think when I do start playing C:S I'll create the version of my city journal town and try to go in a unique direction that incorporates the vision I had for my city in SC4 with C:S.  However, there is certainly something about the color of C:S that makes me prefer the vividness of the colors in SC4, can't quite place my finger on it but...

You can make ploppable and growable, same as SC4, and there are already a lot of both available. Biggest difference of course is the growable size limitation.

So I take it that building a vast New York-style CBD is out of the question at this point in the game? (it's very early)

I'd love to take a look at what's being created if I can (since I trying to track how it develops to determine whether I eventually buy it) where might I go to do this?

Anything closely resembling Manhattan is definitely not possible at the moment, unfortunately, as with SC4 the default skyscrapers are pretty short.

Here is the workshop link, you should be able to browse online without having steam:

The is a lot of junk that is just recolors, small tweaks to the default buildings, but lots of new good stuff added every day. I have lots of hope for whats to come.

For example, here is my CBD, several of the the tallest towers were just added to the workshop today:

There are also already an impressive number of cathedrals and other old style buildings, a bunch or which were added by a Russian modder doing something of a Soviet themed pack, which is really cool for adding historic looking areas to your city. Check that stuff out here:
