What is usually a holiday turns out to be an opportunity for nutz.

Commemoration of the Gunpowder Plot to blow up Parliament has had many strange twists and turns.  This happened in 1605, when Parliament was more or less well established.  It isn't only in America that people try to blow up public buildings.

Today is my brother's birthday.  To be funny, I looked up what obscure holidays were going on, texted him and told him "Happy Guy Fawkes Day.  Be sure to celebrate the traditional way; with gunpowder." (Instead of 'happy birthday')

Never imagined it would become so globally relevant...

The most notable thing about it is that there was a Parliament to blow up in 1605.

Wasn't Fawkes a Catholic with ties to Spain?  The same Spain that was having the Inquisition at the time?  I'm pretty sure he was.  I always thought he was a stupid choice to use as a symbol of freedom.

Actually, Guy Fawkes broke the 11th commandment: "Thou shalt not get caught."  The freedom symbolized is the freedom of Parliament and not freedom in general.  Only fools think they have freedom in general.
