STEX Downloads are really slow downloading

Everytime I've been here I'll download a few files sometimes and its fine, but most of the time downloads from here go really really slow, like dialup slow.

I have 15 mbps Fiber (to the Node) and I don't have problems with speed anywhere else. LEX and PLEX download just fine.

Doesnt matter if the file is 5MB or 500 KB. Nothing drives me up the wall more then seeing 100 KB files downloading so achingly slow.

This problem has been going on for about a year now, though when I first came here it wasnt a problem, downloaded with good speed.

Hm, I haven't downloaded anything from the STEX during the last weeks. I know it used to be slow as heck a longer time ago, but the last downloads I made were pretty fast. I'd have to check when I'm home.

How about other people? Do you also experience "dial-up speed" (which, as I remember from my dial-up days, amounts to ~4.5 kB/second)?

Myep, i have sometimes the same problem.I have a very fast fiberglass connection ( it can download several GB in just two minutes) and from time to time i also have this problem with slow STEX downloads.Sometimes the downloads also seem to be broke and can't be unzipped so i have do try it again.

I always thought the slow DL speed goes together with the slow opening of the Simtropolis page which also sometimes loads in a 90s internet speed or not at all.

Yesterday I uploaded a thing and checked the links I gave in the description. When I clicked on the links It took very long till I got forwarded to the external sites. Same for me with downloads: it takes a lot time till download start, but download itself seems at normal speed.

Yes, quite often it is quite slow, but they usually always do complete.  I often experience the same behavior where the first couple fly by, but then everything seems to ground to a halt.  I have 25 mbps fiber, and LEX and PLEX downloads are usually almost instantaneous.

Testing ... File of 727KB took about three minutes.  That's 180 seconds or 727*1024/180 = 4135.8 bytes/second or about 40K bps.  I have a broadband connection to the server and a 100 K bps card, so this ran at about 40% of my full rate.  Not very good but certainly better than fast dial up (19.2 K bps).

Wonder if the STEX server does some load levelling depending on the number of open circuits?

I've found on the STEX that any download great than 750KB downloads really quickly and takes just about a second for a 750KB to 1MB file. But anything less than 750KB takes about half a minute at least. That's what happens to me anyway.

Dear sir/madam/whoever will read this!

This profile is now defunct.

Computer problems and issues with accessing my Imageshack account meant My SC4 CJ Scrapbook was lost and utterly irretrievable. This setback put me off SC4 for many months.

Apologies for the inconvenience and for the lost pictures.

But that SC4 itch did not go away and it had to be scratched! I have started afresh with a new account here- The British Sausage

The URS is a spiritual successor to the SC4 CJ Scrapbook.

With this update this will be the last time I visit my original Simtropolis account- admin/mods feel free to remove it or do whatever you need to do. I have no further use for the Ln X (BLANKBLANK) account.

With regards, Miles Saunders-Priem aka. Ln X aka. The British Sausage

That happens to me far too often whenever I download stuff off of here. And this is with 25 Mbps Comcast cable internet.

I have no problems with the speed but downloading multiple files simultaneously drastically decreases the speed to almost like 10kb/s. Normally it is around 30-50 kb/s and well, that is how far my internet speed can go. Sometimes it reaches 80kb/s though.

Some node between me and this site is load-levelling or it is the site itself.  I have wired broadband service from my Cable provider which means I have a whole set of TV channel (between Ch. 5 and 6) which runs fibre at some speed much higher than my interface.  Downloads from my software distribution site which can consist of TB of information at one smash show up at very good rate.  My update to this version of the software happened in about two hours and this included about an hour and a half of processing after the download which was about a gigabyte of files packed at *.tar.gz.  Much of the CPU time was taken up unpacking and preparing the update for insertion.

ST is about the slowest site I use.

I'm pretty sure that it's not your cable provider, unless you also have Comcast/ Xfinity like I do. It seems to be something on this site itself, though, because I never get such slow download speeds when I download similarly sized files of the SC4Devotion LEX.

It seems to occur to me when the file size is displayed in kb instead of mb, for some reason. It's never really bothered me, though.
