How are growable tile-sets determined

This may sound like a silly question. The game uses 4 building styles (tile sets): Chicago, New York, Houston, and Euro-Contempory.

When adding downloaded growables, how does the game decide which tile-set the new growable will go in?

Am new to SimCity 4, so... yeah, go easy on me here ;)

It's determined by one of the occupant group properties.

0x2000=Chicago
0x2001=New York
0x2002=Houston
0x2003=Euro

For more info about occupant groups, see here.

The BAT (downloaded building) creator chooses what tile sets the building grows on when creating the building (occupant groups as Turjan said).  It's something you can view and edit with tools like the Reader and PIM-X.

Just to add the view in the Reader:

The last two values tell you that this grows in the Chicago and New York tile sets (you can see this spelled out on the right-hand side). PIM-X has a dropdown menu to change this value. In the Reader, you just edit the numbers.

When I was making BATs years ago, I never assigned groups.  What does the system do if you don't?

    Thanks everyone. Great help! :)

    It looks like the building 'creator' decides which occupant group the building will belong to?

    Will the game cycle through all the buildings from that occupant group and decide at random which one to 'grow'? For instance, if there are 100 different buildings all with the same occupant group, will the game pick randomly from that list of 100 buildings? Is there a limit to how many buildings can be a part of a certain occupant group?

    Thx!

    If you were copying the lot files over from another building, it would use whatever tile sets that building was assigned to.  If the property was left completely blank, I don't think the buildings would grow at all.

    This only applies to residential buildings as far as I know.  I don't think tile sets affect commercial/industrial buildings.

    It also applies to some of the larger commercial buildings (at least the office ones). Wren Insurance, for instance, will never grow if you don't select New York.

    Hmm.  The only growable I have ever made was the Moose Factory Bar and Grill and it grows in most of my cities, but then I usually check build all sets.

    Why some growable lot´s will not grow ?

    Some great growable lots. There´re only there if they are grown. All growable lot growing are determined by wich tile set there assigned to. Stamdard all tile sets are activated when starting a city so a variety of different style tile sets will appear with a random patern. Most lots are assigned to the newyork or chicago style build set. Unless stated, information is scare about the used tile sets, so no guarantee it will work. When creating specialized project you assume that a certain tile set present will do it. Experimenting with my japan setup I detrmined that the newyork tile set was the only handling japanese buildings so that´´s  the set I chose what about the houston and europe tile set Houston set, mid american rural suggest this will handle most non urban american growable as european should work with european w2w growable sets ? European w2w indeed work with the european tile set. Specialized theme like mediteranian or latin wich tile set do they use most ?

    Afther instalation a info about the lot´s, bat´s mostly appear with info about what set is used going to a non installer way of working when unzipping this info aswell be proviede as a htm file in the installation directory. Lot of time and effort gone, it would be nice this info would be provied on the download page so the user can take notice of this. Experimenting with tile sets know the only way to detrmine or it will work. I wondered how some could make such coherent setups I now getting more awar about the mechanics why something will grow or not !

    Sincerely yours,

    Kschmidt
