[Solved] Sim City on Windows 8

I am baffled by this, but many people on here are claiming they can run Sim City 4 on windows 8 just fine.

So, I pop in my Sim City 4 Deluxe CDs (I have 2 of them) and try to run the program

Nothing happens except the first pop up you see.

I tried all compatiblity modes, and I've tried running it on my laptop, but my laptop appears to be out of date and low on the ram required to play this game.

So, I need to know why I can't do this game on Windows 8 Pro 64 bit with an AMD FX 8 GB RAM Core?

It's so frustrating!

And don't tell me to upgrade to the new Sim City... As I said once before on the forum as a different user, I don't like playing online and I personally think the new Sim City is lame. Just personally.

So, can anyone help me?

The new simcity is lame but it has an offline mode now.

Have you tried adjusting command arguments? Remember asking the game to output much above 1080p or a non 4:3/16:9/16:10 resolution will cause it to fail to run.

Other than that I'm unsure of what your issue could be. Perhaps your installation is corrupted?

I would recommend running thru particularly the bit about adding ur OS to the list.

Other option use the new NAM to patch the exe so u get more of the system RAM for the game to play with.

Good luck

It is not completely clear to me what your results are.  Using disk 1 you should get the installer.  After you have run the installer you will end up with disk 2 (the play disk) in your drive and the game should start.

If you are running the standard desktop (not that tablet abortion), all should be well and you should get the regular icon.  If this is not the case, just what does happen?

And, by the way, after the two disk installation you still need to patch the game at least to include the appropriate EP1 version for your game's SKU, and to be complete you should also install the night lights patch bringing your game to 1,1,640,0 build level.

Windows 8 is just another hacked up version of windows NT (NT6.2 to be exact), so it is hard to understand why your are having this problem.

Many people are running on Windows 8 without difficulty.

As a matter of minor interest, I had to purchase a new copy of the game because my disks became worn out.  So I purchased a copy of the digital download (currently on sale at GOG.com) and got build 1,1,641,1 which is fully patched and runs without disks.

That's worth knowing. Everything else is considerably fiddly but this sounds favourable as everything I've tried doesn't change anything (I have had exactly the same problem as Brandon Thomason). I go through the two SC4 Deluxe Edition discs to install then follow on with the Rush Hour disc and nothing happens except the starting picture of the bridge... then nothing.

If one were to download a copy of the digital download of the Deluxe Edition, can you then install the Rush Hour from disc over the top?

Is there a pop up on the top right corner? Click it and then 'run' the disc.

There's no need: SC4 Deluxe = Original game + RH. ;)

The Rush Hour expansion is only really useful if you've got the original game. It can't be installed separately.

It is?! I thought Rush Hour was even more than the Deluxe Edition. So the Deluxe Edition will run exactly the same as Rush Hour?

So the Deluxe Edition will run exactly the same as Rush Hour?

Yes, that's correct. :thumb:

The Deluxe Edition is basically just a re-branded version, which combines the original and the expansion pack.

Most (if not all) online retailers will sell the deluxe edition, especially when sold digitally.

Quoting from the game's user manual:

NOTE TO BUYERS OF SIMCITY 4 RUSH HOUR EXPANSION PACK

Already own SimCity 4? When you install the SimCity 4 Rush Hour Expansion Pack, the process will automatically reconfigure and update your version of SimCity 4 so that it offers the same gameplay as SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition. For those of you who are mathematically minded...

SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition = SimCity 4 + SimCity 4 Rush Hour Expansion Pack

So don’t rush out and buy Rush Hour if you have SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition, and if you’ve already bought SimCity 4 Rush Hour, don’t buy the Deluxe Edition -- you already have it!

This manual is included with BOTH products. Features new to SimCity 4 Rush Hour are designated in the manual. Have fun!

Hope this clarifies.

(Let's now continue discussion on the OP's question)...

If you have the edition being currently offered by GOG.com, it is complete and does not need any "fixing".  It will run without disks in drives nor any patches.

If windows 8 is giving you a problem get rid of the "Let's pretend I'm a tablet" desktop and use the alternate one that looks more or less like Windows 7.  You should find your start icon for the game there.  You will have to edit the shortcut's target box to include the options you need to run the game on your machine from the link I gave above.

There is nothing new or mysterious about Windows 8 except that never to be sufficiently damned touch screen desk top.

Failing finding the icon on the desktop, create it by using windows explorer to find the executable file "SimCity 4.exe", make a short cut for it (right click) where it resides, then drag the short cut onto the desktop.

Okay, I fixed the problem by adding the parameters to both the LOT editor and the SC4 exe file:  -intro:off -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 -d:software -f -CPUcount:1

I did all of this and it worked like a charm

I read a thread about how to fix it like this... but I can't remember/find where... :/

Some confusion here.  You should not be able to add anything to a *.exe file.  Perhaps you meant to the shortcut to the file?

So, Windows 8 is not really a troll bridge after all, eh?

FYI, a troll bridge looks like any other bridge except a rather nasty troll leaps out demanding you give him your first born in order to cross.
