RIP to the Prince.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-36106778

I can't believe it. The man looked so young for someone in his 50s.

Dear sir/madam/whoever will read this!

This profile is now defunct.

Computer problems and issues with accessing my Imageshack account meant My SC4 CJ Scrapbook was lost and utterly irretrievable. This setback put me off SC4 for many months.

Apologies for the inconvenience and for the lost pictures.

But that SC4 itch did not go away and it had to be scratched! I have started afresh with a new account here- The British Sausage

The URS is a spiritual successor to the SC4 CJ Scrapbook.

With this update this will be the last time I visit my original Simtropolis account- admin/mods feel free to remove it or do whatever you need to do. I have no further use for the Ln X (BLANKBLANK) account.

With regards, Miles Saunders-Priem aka. Ln X aka. The British Sausage

The media in Canada (Prince was once married to a Canadian and lived in Toronto) are calling him the musical icon of our time.  He was most certainly a polymath of music.  His prodigious output, capability and generosity puts me in mind of people like Alexander Borodin, W. A. Mozart, and L. von Beethoven.

Remember that Borodin was a working physician and music was a side line for him.  He refused, more than once, to give it up and become a full time musician.

    CBC's tribute to Prince.

Jessica Wong sums up rather thoroughly.

Prince was a great musician and I grew up listening to most of his hits. However, I wouldn't compare him to greats like Mozart or Beethoven. I think Bowie is leagues more appropriate. =)

Joan Marie "Chyna Doll" Laurer also passed away this week.

I first found out about her on VH1 and later found out ... more

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

    Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

If you know music history, you'll find that given each ones times, their histories are similar.  Music genres change and develop.  All these people had a profound effect on the development of music.

Totally! I don't in any way mean to dismiss/degrade Prince. I just miss Bowie. I grew up on both and When Doves Cry was one of my favorite songs in elementary. =)

^ Alas for David Bowie.  He was, perhaps, a showier performer, but as a general musician Prince takes him in cards and spades.

San Antonio native and Tejano music legend Emilio Navaira, often known simply as Emilio, also passed away on May 16.  Tejano is a popular, Spanish-language musical genre of South Texas that blends Mexican folk and cowboy country styles with Central European accordion and polka music.  Other popular Mexican styles here are norteño, conjunto, banda, ranchera, duranguense, and mariachi.  I will admit, I am not a Tejano listener or Spanish speaker and these both now make me a local cultural outsider, as Emilio's passing was considered major news in the San Antonio region with locals expressing shock and exchanging personal stories of about how they remembered growing up with Emilio's singing and his band alongside that other Tejano music legend, Selena.  It may be possible to directly map the social demographics and cultural differences of this city based solely on surveyed responses to Tejano music or familiarity with Emilio.

I once thought of Muhammad Ali as an egotist, but it is unfortunate that years of boxing may had ultimately shortened his life.  Ali had Parkinson's Disease for over 30 years and it is believed that it was the result of all the pounding Ali took on his head during his boxing career.
