Hello,

Am building an international airport and I want to show as much detail as possible.I'm interested in knowing why an airport like Dubai international is so busy.Is it that people travel to and from there for commercial activities or are they mostly stopover flights with passengers being transferred to other destinations?

My city is kinda modelled after Dubai and I would be glad to know the concepts behind everything there.Feel free to give your insights on Dubai's economy.

I hope this is the right forum?

Dubai is the hub for Emirates. As such, there a lot of connecting flights. People will fly to Dubai and then catch another flight to their destination.

Most of the world's busiest airports are hubs. Other examples include Atlanta (Delta) and Hethrow (British Airways).

Dubai is busy as it is a hub. It is really the best location for a hub as pretty much anywhere in the world is only one flight away. The Middle East really is the center of the globe.

DXB is somewhat acting like a transit hub for passengers from Asia to Europe or East Coast to Asia, though Tourism, Business and Commercial activities is also a big part of the traffic.

Thank you all for the comments. So it's more of being in a strategic location such that all major flights pass through there right?

I was wondering if a city with Dubai's level of development but in west africa would have such traffic at its major international airport?(let's say in a decade's time)

I have adjusted my city's airport capacity to be 50 million. How practical do you think it is?

Am doing a west african city which would almost be a recreation of Dubai but I want geographical location to have an influence.:)

Why not invent a globally successful airline that would use such an airport in West Africa as their hub for flights across the South Atlantic? Seems to be the natural conclusion, although obviously such a hub would not be as globally 'central' as the Dubais and Heathrows of this world.

A lot flights between North America and Southern Africa transit through West African airports. A lot of people fly through Muhammad Murtala Airport in Lagos.

    @MrVanleider:

Yeah am inventing an airline called Havi Air(national carrier of Havilah Republic) with flights to a lot of destinations just like Emirates.I guess this is how my airport can attain the status I want.

    Well,I've decided on this:

I would say the airport handles 30 mill a year but has capacity of 40 mill so I can build it a big.I guess that is quite practical.

    Btw,stay tuned for the CJ:

Port Larcliff,A Dubai in West Africa.Hopefully to be released this year.:)

Don't forget Dallas/Fort Worth Int'l is American Airlines' hub.

you can't look at a single airline here. of course it's true that emirates uses dubai intl. as their base of operations and therefore offer a lot of traffic, but it's strategic location for middle eastern / asian pacific flights turn dubai into a hub for the major carrier congolmerates, star alliance and one world. most of the traffic at dubai intl. comes through one of these networks, same for any hub airport in the world.

especially with connecting flights you come across one of these 2. a look at the daily traffic board in dubai suggests that emirates is not the main traffic generating "force" there despite dubai being their base. in fact, over 100 airlines operate regularily at this airport and emirates only makes up for about 1/3 of the aircraft movements there. their passenger volume tho is quite a lot as they operate a lot of high capacity aircraft such as the b777 and a380.

and don't forget the role of dubai itself.

It's a very fast growing commercial location attracting a lot of customers and businessmen from all over the world.

and with it's trademark architecture and economic programs to create a working post-oil economy dubai also increases it's touristic appeal.

And Bush Intercontinental for United Airlines. They were the home base for Continental prior to the merger.
