How do develop specific buildings?

As the day of my city journal's publication draws nearer, finishing touches are being added.  However, when I zone "Medium Density" I get either high rises or suburban homes.  What I'm looking for is row homes, like those in many American cities.

Alright, now this is something Im very experienced at. It sounds complicated, but its really easy if you know how to work with PIMX or Reader...

You see, every building has stages: 1 - 8

The lower stages are of course what pops up first, and basically required to build the next stages.

Now, what you want to do is, go to Reader, and open the building you want to grow. Now, what you want to do is change the stage and see in what architecture you want it to grow. Save, and you are ready to build.

Now, when you zone, you need to make sure that:

1) You meet the required stage

2) You zone correctly

Now, to get those row homes, what you need to do is (assuming you did edit your buildings corrrectly) zone with different Residential "limits". Its not the actual name, but lets call it that way for now...

You see you have 3 levels of zoning.. low, medium, and high.. so what you want to do to avoid those 2x2 buildings to take over your 1x2 row homes, is zone 1x2 medium, an next to it a 1x2 high. Repeat this process, an you will end up with something looking like this

1x2M-1x2H-1x2M.. and so on..

You get the picture =P

Hope this helps!!

Also to increase your odds of getting the row houses is to select only the tile sets the said houses are a part of.  Say the row houses are only part of the Chicago and New York tile set, them make sure you unmark the Houston and Europe tiles sets.  Zone as cmdp stated above and then watch for the row houses to develop.  Once one does, mark it historical and demolish the rest (rezone as necessary) and let them redevelop.  Repeat the process until the number of row houses you desire have developed and they are marked historical.  I know it is somewhat of a tedious process, but it should produce the desired results.

I had an idea a while back.  It's a bit idealistic, and it would take a while, but the result would be great.

You potentially could use tile sets to have more control over development.  You could mod the tile sets of your buildings.  Put lots of medium apartment buildings into one set.  Of course, you only have 4 sets to work with, and it could take a while to do depending on how many buildings you have downloaded.

Easiest thing to do is use the extra cheats dll command BldgPlop.  Then make it historical.

Residential plops (BATs) cannot be seen by the pathfinder, so your Sims never get home after work.  The bug is in the exe so can't be fixed.

Hi,

I have some older posts relating to this (although not specifically about it). Take a look and Unfortunately these are old posts and the imageshack site has changed its policies since then, so the images can only be downloaded, not viewed directly. You can see large clusters of all-same buildings (don't claim that the aesthetic result is "nice", it is uniform though) but the point here is to showcase the technique and the results it can deliver, not make a CJ. All these buildings are growable. The technique is tedious but allows you to grow what you want where you want (provided that demand and growth-stage conditions allow it). Esp pay attention to my words about the transient aura effect, and the lots I mentioned, Also, the Less Ababdonment mod by Bones1 can be used to avert dilapidation and abandonment when the transient effect wanes, although it actually makes it harder to get $$ and $$$ development in the first place..

Hope you find this helpful
