Because the nitrogen in the atmosphere scatters the blue light in the sun light.  That is why the sky appears blue and the sun appears yellow.  From outer space the sun appears white.

Perhaps because of the angle of the horizon relative to our position and the scattering of the light across the sky but I'll leave this case for the real scientists to answer. :P

Because people would have ot launch into space, live in a cramped tin can, floating through space for a long time, only to land, build another cramped tin can, and live in it. Not very appealing.
