That is actually a default cheat code. Ctrl+X and type in "recorder". That box pops up where you can then set the input. The game only creates a bunch of pictures, so you have to use a different program to stitch them together into an animation. More info here.

I recorded and it shows as only little parts of the whole screen.

In the recorder, you get to set your frame size.  Anything from full screen down.  My sig was made this way then using a GIF editor to add the lettering and consolidate the frames.

You could use the GIMP for this.  The learning curve is rather steep.  If you go that route be sure to load the tutorial (Grokking the GIMP).  You load your frames as multiple layers, do whatever editing is needed then export the result as a GIF.

To increase the size of the captured area, drag the box from the edges:

Graphics editors that allows multi-layering will usually have an "export to GIF" option. If you'd rather not download any software, there are also some free online GIF creators available. Try a quick Google search. Though these tend to have a limit on the number of frames, so are restrictive for longer animations.

GIMP is free and will do just about anything.  If you choose it, be sure to also get the help files and any extensions you want, like the animation package (GAP).
