It seems you are in love with the architecture of Manhattan from the late 1890's to the 1920's? I know I am! Though i love that the skyscraper boom peaked in the 30's with Art Deco becoming its own unique style, I am fascinated with the style of those early skyscrapers; the European influence on the buildings, the terracotta, the Gothic and Renaissance influence and all those mansard roofs. It was a really interesting period and American cities look so different now.

Thank you! It seems we share the same feeling about this. I, too, love the Art Deco buildings that give New York City its vibe. At the same time, I'm captivated by the early skyscrapers. I'd even adjust the time frame to 1860-1920. One of my all-time favorites is the original Equitable Life Ins. Co. Building from 1868, along with the ones on Newspaper Row. I think what draws me to this period is how they represent the final era of blending historicist architecture with the state of the art technologies of their time.

I see your point - it can be frustrating when a model of a building we like never makes it into the game. However, I don’t think it’s right to obligate people to make their work available to third parties just because they shared images at some point, that feels like an exaggeration. Anyway, I don’t plan on abandoning my projects, as they’ve been my biggest hobby for over a decade. But if that day ever comes, you can be sure I’ll make the raw files available.

 

Expanding on the topic of historic buildings, I’d like to share two more models and show an example of when I start a new version from scratch. Below are the second New York City Hall, which was transformed into Federal Hall after 1789, and the Gillender Building. While they’re shown together in their exact relative positions in the renders, they were never contemporaries. Interestingly, there’s still a setback in the Bankers Trust Co. Building block on Nassau Street due to the old City Hall’s location.

I started the first version of the Gillender building in 2019, and the second in 2022 (the one lacking windows). This new version came about after I found better drawings and pictures of the building, allowing for greater accuracy in the dimensions of its elements. I’m now creating all models with interiors, even for non-glazed buildings. These interiors aren’t fully modeled; instead, I apply a texture to the slab, similar to what I did with the BDMG Headquarters building. I find this approach more practical, and in my opinion it adds a better sense of depth at night.

Found this cool map that defines the New York era I'm most fascinated by, which your bats lovingly symbolize.

It's a high quality picture- open the image in a new window and zoom in and you get a great idea of how downtown looked like in 1909! The Singer building dominating.

Beautiful, beautiful map! I love these bird's-eye images they used to make back then. If you also like them, there are some very pretty ones of NYC and other U.S. cities in the NYPL and LoC digital collections.

 

Here’s an image from another project. Once, while searching for interesting buildings in Africa, I came across the Cine-Estúdio Namibe in Angola. Before its completion, the country gained independence from Portugal, followed shortly by a civil war that lasted three decades. As a result, the building was never actually used for its intended purpose and remained abandoned all this time. In recent years, I’ve seen reports that there were plans to renovate it, but I don’t have much more information on that.
