Rail in/on Road

Does it exist, and if so where could I download the plugin? Is it even possible? I've seen no mention of anything like it and I would hope it wouldn't be too hard to make, as I really want to use it for industrial areas with rails going right in front of the buisnesses. I would envision it as something like GLR in avenue but with freight and passenger trains

All GLR (and El-Rail) setups contain Heavy Rail paths. This can be seen using the drawpaths cheat in the Extra Cheats Mod by Buggi (available on the STEX). You'll need to be creative when connecting the rail to the GLR-in-Road or GLR-on-road (or any version of El-Rail) as they lack appropriate stubs; the FLUP piece overplopped a rail stub next to the appropriate tram-to-TIR puzzle piece works niecely; I'd post a picture, but I'm away from my SC4 computer. I can say that I've used this for the exact purpose you mention, and it works well. It's worth noting that you need to actually make rail spurs to get freight and passenger trains on this particular line, because the game still treats the network like a road, even if it does carry normal heavy rail trains.

It's important to keep in mind that that's an unintended function and as one of the NAM developers, I wouldn't recommend it. Also, it wouldn't be as fast as regular Rail; its speed is 150km/h, whereas the speed of Elevated Rail (used in all forms of ELR-related transportation, including GLR) would be 115km/h, so from a speed perspective, it wouldn't work, either.

The only reason such paths are even there are for UDI functionality for all ELR-related functionality.

Not to derail the thread here (HUEHUEHUEHEHUEHUEHUE), but the google search you linked doesn't actually show any rail-in-road setups for me and only shows rail or rail crossings. I also find such a setting unlikely in real life, such heavy interaction between heavy rail and road traffic seems really dangerous to me.

They do exist, and they used to in a lot of old industrial areas.

The most prominent example I can think of is Denison Street in Rockhampton: http://goo.gl/maps/uYJaX

I encounter this setup fairly regularly in RL, but as JD suggested that's in industrial areas. I've been toying around with the idea of creating something like this, but it would be fairly far down the priority list. Also, since it will concern an additional override network (like we haven't enough already) any of its functionality will be very limited and will probably not support anything beyond orthogonal surface network crossings.

Cheers

Willy

I'd love to see this in a basic straightaway and maybe even a puzzle piece that makes road go sideways with continuing rail ro something for my industrial parks and things like that, so if anyone finds/makes it, be sure to spread the word! :D
