SHOREHOLLOW PROJECT:

THEMATIC CONCEPTS AND STRUCTURES

This is Finn and it's a pleasure to meet you all. I'll be using this introductory post for this thread as an update on the roster of

various structures that I'll be working on as we go forth. And, as the list grows I may change how it is displayed in the future to

minimize clutter. Renders will have its own post along with explanations, issues, et cetera. Let me know if you guys have any

questions or suggestions. Enjoy.

    132 NORTH HARBELL STREET

PRELIMINARY Z5 RENDER - DAY, SOUTH

This is an original high-rise condominium that I've been working on a little over two weeks. It's going

slow, >.<  but, to keep things simple, I started out with alternating pentagons and hexagons and worked my

way up. And, to add some depth and augment the organic feel of the structure, the shapes differ in

thickness and layers. What started out as an idea from looking at snowflake patterns and oak tree

branches, here is something that you guys can finally comment/critique. It is still in the beginning stages

of modeling so be gentle. :D

For the next update, I plan to add a lot of compartments on the sides (it's looking really flat and linear at

the moment). Moreover, once that is done, I'll have a go on adding glass to the structure so that you

guys can review that as well. Hmm... I'm going to have to think about the base part of the structure soon.

Perhaps, a right triangle with tapered corners, since it is wider on one side than the other? Anyways,

enjoy guys and have a good one.

Your 132 North Harbell Street, seems very strange :) . What is its planet of origin ? :D

This BAT, should be very interesting when it will finished , I'll like see your work progress ;) , keep up.

Uhhhhh AWESOME!  Looking forward to how you can integrate that contemporary design within a modern cityscape (if that is even the point/goal).

Phew, just got back from work. Now, I can start modeling again--been thinking/doodling about different things all day. Thanks for all the comments guys, much appreciated! I'll try to post an update within the next couple days or so to test the waters on glass specific texturing and settings and finish the sides of this condominium.

That's some pretty awesome and creative modeling there!

It was almost like a sudden burst of creativity juice sloshing about in my head. :boggle: Haha, but yes, I also started thinking about ways to fix/redesign the 581 Collenswood Avenue to work on concurrently with this structure. I'll start posting updates on that soon as well.

Hmm, perhaps from Planet X. Nah, that's too cheesy. >.< Nonetheless, I definitely would like to see this condominium finished too so that I can focus more/get some motivation on my other upcoming structures and give them the time/dedication that they need. Hopefully, with your texturing expertise and others' out there I'll learn valuable techniques to help me design better throughout this project and future ones as well.

Definitely, even though I'm just designing/putting out architectural works here as a hobby, I always take the structure's surroundings into consideration when I BAT. I'm a firm believer of balance in design and I'm just glad to start this thread as an opportunity to help me excel and pump out more quality work that everyone can enjoy.

Very interesting, it reminded me of the Melbourne Recital Centre when I saw it.

    [ IMG ]

I love that first image of the shoreline btw. Very pretty :)

    Keep up the great work.

Gotta love how the white cladding echoes the organic design of the glass work. Hmm, this is surely something that I can take inspiration from. In fact, I may test some designs on the idea of "echoing" or subtle fractals for the sides of the structure. Thanks much for that. On the other hand, I've been wanting to do a CJ of this overall project along that shoreline and on areas not pictured yet once I finish some BATs here and there. It is tentative surely, but possible, nonetheless.

Thanks again everyone for all your encouraging words! Have a good one and happy BATing as always.

    132 NORTH HARBELL STREET

    Z5 RENDER UPDATE (R. 34) - DAY, NORTH

It's been awhile since I posted an update. Apologies, for being away for so long. >.< As for the model

itself, going a dozen revisions up had to be one of the longest development cycle I've ever endured

and half of those revisions a potential design change. It did put me back quite a bit in my BATing

schedule; however, the heart of the design philosophy is still there but now with some interesting

distortions caused by slicing up layers into differing angles of 15 degrees each and spreading phases

in an array across horizontally and mirroring the other side at 45 degrees and back to 0 degrees to

add some deconstructivist characteristics while retaining the organic-postmodern look for a bit of a

twist. Although it is fairly disjointed at the moment, it will be my last major design change before I

get into exterior/interior detailing, add/join more floors, and remove some intersecting

splines/polygons for a more coherent whole. Image is zoomable below.

    zt0h.jpg

Now, as for the base, I added some initial detailing for a potential neoclassical style but wasn't

entirely sure. What about a neogothic base? If you guys can chime in on the style for the base that

would be great. I'm planning on adding some automatic garage for the ground level to give it some

high-tech vibe and some vegetation and trees later. But, I'll post a more proper render in a couple

    of weeks or so. Have a good one as always. :}

This is excellent, I just love this. You have an excellent opportunity to make something great here. Have you decided on a colour scheme yet? I'd give chrome or brushed metal, coupled with some hanging planet life and vines a try.

Phew, so much work ahead of me, I can picture it now. :boggle: Thanks for the boost, Bipin haha. :}  But yes, I'll definitely give the chrome (slightly weathered possibly) a go and the vegetation idea is very intriguing, much appreciated. Do you think a neoclassical styled base that conforms to the shape I put in there would clash too much with the actual condominium? Was hoping to achieve what some modern architects do such as Norman Foster with his Hearst Tower design in New York--incorporating an existing, less contemporary Art Deco base with a contrasting, more modern skyscraper above. Is it perhaps too cliché? I guess in my case, an older styled base would be rather strange but anything is possible, the base is still in the planning stage. Any thoughts?

A Bipin-Finnbhennach collaboration? I can only imagine what amazing creation two genius minds at work would produce :golly:

You're certainly on the ball with this one Reddonquixote! ;) I think the future of BATing the, well... future, would really benefit from defining a set of guidelines for texture, style and overall form. I consulted with a few other members interested in this. The result was the creation of a "viney" texture to meet the needs of organic buildings, which is further exemplified by the organic, natural forms of said structures:

    8afcd2507682793957a16bcc659a851bbefbae66

Thus, with a texture like this, you'd express that organic ideal from both surface texture and overall shape contexts. Just as you have planned, the texture has some weathering and vegetation amongst the metal cladding. If you'd be interesting in using this texture as a starting point to modify for your own needs, let me know. I think with a few changes, it could work very well for your building. If we do end up with a collaborative project some time in the future, standardizing the textures between the two of us at this stage would be a great step forward!

We can use it for the Future Project Team. Edit: Also how does one create structures such as this?

It started out as defining the pentagon shape in the form of a spline--basically, two-dimensional for simplicity. Now, the exact dimensions come from where the two pentagons meet together with one upside down at the 5m mark, taking 1m for the thickness of the floor below and 3m for clearance and another 1m for the upper floor. There are cases where interlocking two pentagons at certain patterns create a void where another pentagon cannot take place. That's where the hexagon comes in by intersecting two pentagons (one upside down) and taking out unnecessary segments to form the six-sided shape with variance. After tweaking and filling out certain spaces you end up with a grid of hexagons/pentagons in a particular, overall form such as this condominium. Nonetheless, I'll post an in-depth tutorial to clarify more details when I find the time because I've left out some crucial details that is better illustrated visually.

A Bipin-Finnbhennach collaboration? I can only imagine what amazing creation two genius minds at work would produce :golly:

This is something that I could definitely look forward to in the near future while I garner more 3d modeling experience here and there--still got lots to learn, though. A trio or more for custom content would be really interesting as well--something simple and elegant yet with some distortion thrown in for a bittersweet, visual experience.

What the heck is this sponge-like thing? Anyway, I don't care. I like it, keep it up :thumb:

Glad I tickled your fancy a little, if not some. But... more on the way. :kitty:

Oh, yes, I'll let you know once I'm ready to experiment with textures and as far as standardizing them, it is a step in the right direction, absolutely.  I'm glad you brought that out here. Just need a couple more bare-bones render and should be good to go.

    581 COLLENSWOOD AVENUE
    PRELIMINARY Z5 RENDER - DAY, POV4

Good evening, everyone. Hopefully, I wasn't away for too long. The 132 NHS condominium still needs some work so I'll post an

update after this. Nonetheless, for the second official project, I drew in a lot of inspiration from differing aspects that define

organic architecture in some way--glacial ice patterns/streaks, aquatic, skeletal remains, and the clover leaf that can be

extrapolated from many Gothic structures already. Now, albeit strange but just to give it a bit of a twist, the concept of

magnetic repulsion subtly influences the columns and the floors that spiral into chaos as it grows in height. It is still in the

    beginning stages of its life but enjoy and let me know if you guys need any clarification on certain things. :}

I'm glad to see you comeback at work with this beautiful BAT ;)

What's new of your precedents projects ?

Thanks, Dark.  :kitty: I can't wait 'til I start on the detailing work for the Gothic ornaments for the base and the upper section. The angled, concave arch, although very basic for now on the first floor, will be one of the most challenging aspect of my modeling journey so far--the second being the actual floors for its tediousness, >.< managing 500+ vertex points each for manual adjustments to conform to the irregular twist. Nonetheless, back to the first project that I've started. Just needed some time to explore new ideas/techniques so that I don't get burnt out--getting ready to post the side renders of 132 NHS that you and others haven't seen just yet. Some curvature will be incorporated into the floors to balance out the sharpness of the pentagons/hexagons and the relative flat surface of the front/back. Hopefully, I can post a barebones render before this year is up but no telling just yet. Then, will begin work on the texturing aspect soon after.

Wow that building looks like it was twisted like a candy wrapper!

You can post it to this page also.

Haha, phew, took so long to get this result--cigarettes in one hand and mouse in the other manually adjusting vertex points one by one with half-open eyes. >.< The only thing that bugs me is that I still have more to go, oh god.  :boggle: There's got to be a more efficient way of modeling this project. o.O

The descriptions themselves allude to the equally poetic masterpieces that are your models. Well done!

Aww, thanks for those encouraging words, Bipin! :} Still got lots to do but after these two projects are done I was thinking we do a collaborative project together when possible and only if you're ok with it. Reserved an idea for a third project that is potentially more technical and advanced that I would love to work on with you (and others if interested). The inspiration comes from badly battered, irregular meteorite surfaces and shattered glass as the basis for the structure and then smoke and parametric equations for some interesting distortion and conjunction. The idea is relatively vague but descriptive enough for us to realize/design something as a team. If you're interested let me know. :D

    This is too awesome! :O

Thanks, buddy! I've been reading up on your thread and the progress is coming along nicely--keep going at it!
