Great update! (again....)

I really love this region-update, it makes thing a lot clearer.

Are you actually playing all these cities in one (simcity)-region? Or all seperate regions?
And will we ever see Anderson up-close? 4.gif

Patiently (sp?) waiting!

Edit: Bend and Eureka are in onregion atleast, aren't they? I believe I can see it in some region pics.

Yes, Bend and Eureka are closer to each other than I thought. Great map, I like drawing such things myself. It seems to me that there are many rather large cities within quite small an area. Something that might develop into a megalopolis in the future.

I was wondering if we'd see Bend again, or if we'd ever get a look at Anderson...your best update yet, as far as I'm concerned...

Wow great map of the area with all the cool cities!  I like how you listen to your fans and build an update around that... from what I can tell, this isn't a pre-written CJ, or is it?  I'm just curious because I'm writing the 60 chapters to mine now... 3.gif21.gif23.gif

Anyways, your presentation is snappy (I always read ALL the text... that's rare for me 5.gif), the pictures clear, and the diagrams comprehensive... being a fellow New Urbanist, I love things like that, so I can know exactly what you're... sorry, Mayor Hiro's doing next... 18.gif

If Eureka's explosive growth continues it's going to be like Raleigh-Durham, or Minneapolis-St. Paul. Your most recent post illustrates the gross size of the region Eureka is in.

As Eureka is not just little under half the size of Bend, I'm pretty sure that you will see a challenge of the dominance of Bend, very similarly to the growth of St. Louis County vs. the non-growth of the City of St. Louis. This yarn gets more exciting by the post, and I'm glued to it.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: This CJ is a masterpiece.(actually, I haven't, but I still mean it). 9.gif

Man, I go away for a bit and come back to find THREE pages since my last post. Just goes to show what a wicked CJ this is. Great Updates as always. And I love the arial views.

I was just wondering. These other cities around Eureka, besides Bend which I know you have actually created, have you created them or are they just made up? And if you have created them (which I suspect you have2.gif) will we be seeing them in the future?

Always looking forward to the next update.

A very worthy CJ of a Trixie. Great work going on here. What photo-editing program do you use here? What is the name of the function that gives a tint to a selected area?

I'm glad to know where all the cities are around Eureka; also, as others have already mentioned, can we get some close up pictures of those other cities (Anderson, Tilly, North Derby, etc.) please? Sorry for being demanding, but, as great a city as Eureka is, I'm sure your other cities are great as well, and I would love to see them!

Keep up the great work!29.gif'); height=15 alt=Insert smilie 29.gif src=https://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/29.gif width=15 border=0>

    And...

To answer a repeated question:  No, most of the cities featured in the previous region map have not been built in the game.  Unfortunately, I don't have the kind of time it takes to build five or six different cities and maintain them.  Eureka is a pretty big handful as it is!

The screenshot of Anderson was actually a shot from an old city I did a couple years ago, and is no longer playable.

The only two cities that have actually been built and are being constantly updated are Eureka and Bend.  This journal will spend some time in Bend before too long, but for now we're just sticking with the Harbor City.  Sorry to disappoint!

    wendgram!

Hey Hiro dumped dirt into the Harbor, but at least he is responsible, but Wendgram is a filthy industrialist who only can the see the bottom line. What does Eureka's city council do? Restrict the zoning plan?

    drama...

Oh dear. It seems that they're going to have chaos in Eureka...

I don't visit enough. 45.gif But every time I do visit, every update gets better and better.

That area is not zoned, is it? If so, he can't build that land. The city should release a manual of style about new development.

Also: there was an in-game shot of Anderson, wasn't there?

Somehow my post got deleted. I think it was a mistake, but I hope I didn't violate any rules. The moderators would tell me if there was something wrong with it, wouldn't they? That being said, I shall attempt to re-post.

Love this journal! Can't believe how often it's been striking parallels with real life... Luckily for Eureka, Hiro and his staff are much more competent than a lot of the planners and politicians I've run into during RL growth struggles. It's going to be interesting to watch Eurekians deal with the prospects and challenges of new growth, especially with leadership that appears to really know what they're doing. I wish them well!

I've heard a lot of Wendgramian (Wendgramish?) talk from the sprawl-builders in my community too, and you've sort of nailed it down to the punctuation. However, I have noticed a new trend as well: billing sprawl projects as new urbanism to get the planning scholars on board with them.

Often, this ends up being some pretty preverse stuff. One of the projects is a plan for a 14-story mixed-use condo building across the street from a conventional sprawling strip mall and next door to the typical apartment complex on parking lots. This building, built on previously rural land with no plans for installing a new grid system, transit improvements, or improvements of place, is being touted as the center of a new urban village. The hope would be that the project would be an anchor to help correct mistakes of the past. (Not likely though, as the next door projects are virtually as new as the condo proposal.)

In this way, a developer is using new urbanist language to promote what is clearly an insane overdevelopment in a region where the city government has failed to do its job to properly regulate and use growth to improve the old city rather than degrade it.

Sometimes I worry that a misunderstood brand of new urbanism maybe even more detrimental in terms of growth impact than conventional sprawl, simply because it brings a massive population into an area with the same infrastructure problems as sprawl. It's sorta like sprawl on steroids, as opposed to actually smart growth.

Anywho, given the political environment in Eureka, Wendgram could learn from these developers and try to enact his own twist of new urbanism. Something tells me, though, that Eureka's mayor would be much more capable of distinguishing true principles of smart growth from more deceptive ones.

PS. Thanks for the help with terraforming tools. Much appreciated.

I knew it! I knew that Wnedgram wouldn't stay away for long. Hiro better watch him for urban sprawl. Bad things are on the move.

    Great stuff. Keep it up!

Eureka!9.gif  Irresponsible suburbia returns.  17.gif I can't wait for my 20 minute drive to the local supermarket in back of my house.  Or calmy walking down those high speed roads with no sidewalks.  At least we'll still have a place to meet our neighbors at the Wal-Marts and shopping malls.  Go Wendgram!!35.gif35.gif35.gif

    37.gif I hope you show his design v Hiro's.

Well, Eureka itself isn't neccecarily good for the region, imo. I hope it doesn't just end up shifting jobs from other cities to itself, although right now it looks like most of the development is from the immigrants.

It's interesting too see that region map for me, since I live in Detroit. If that was a map of south east michigan, 3/4s of it would be suburbs. Of course Sim Citys scale is different, but the region is still doing very well compared to many American regions.

    Wow... who saw that coming...

Everyone, but who cares, it's still exciting... 3.gif  The things get really interesting... I'd say if Hiro regulated Wendgram's development so that it would match the Clarence Perry sketch, it wouldn't be too bad... I'll post a picture later if you don't know what I'm talking about... 3.gif 21.gif

Oh the tension mounts. This is a great CJ. The only oddity I have is that William's Ridge has no roads leading out of it.

Very nice CJ.  This by far is one of the most thought out regions I have ever seen.  Maybe you should re-consider your career, I believe the city of Louisville could someone with your talents.
