Changing Ground Highway Textures?

Is it possible to change the textures for Ground Highways to some darkblue-gray tarmac color like they are here in Holland instead of those darkgray stripe of concrete?

<img width=840>

I don't mind drawing some of those textures but I don't know how to change those textures.

So, anybody, is it possible?

I, too, would like to see asphault ground highways. I'm pretty sure it's possible after what tropod and all them did with the N.A.M.

Ask yourself: Do you really want to mess around with textures on the highways.

1. it's very hard to do, and there are only a few people on this site who can do it.

2. people like tropod, gizmo, teirusu and others, don't have changing the textures on ground highways very high on there list.

if it were up to me...i'd change the whole dang high system in the game...its waaaaaaaaay to unreal for me. I know how a lot of ppl feel about them. I live in Canada and highways aren't always separated by a concrete bar and concrete. There usually ashpalt and separated differently depending on the surroundings...(i.e. median is grass if rural somtimes with a separator and medians are concrete with some sort of separator in urban areas)...plus i don't like how highways are always 3 lanes...i would personally like 4-6 lane freeways in my urban areas and 2-3 lanes in my rural areas and many styles of on-ramps and ways to access the highway. Also junctions where a highway splits up or a lane(s) split off...i know these ideas are probably impossible but if were already making mods we didn't think we could...i believe we can do the same for the highway problem.

plus in my opinion highways are a number one priority to me...cause they're what bring masses of people to a city. well i don't know about airports but highways are still cool!

If Tunafish is right, I'm quite surprised that no-one's interested in changing the road/highway surface textures (though there's the dirt-track street mod, so someone knows how!).

Why am I surprised? Because there seems to be a lot of effort being put in building-wise to internationalise the feel of Sim City. Every country has its own set of road/highway markings so getting away from the concrete highways and US road markings would be a good step in fully internationalising the game.

It probably won't happen, simply because highways are 3d, so you'd need to model in in gmax. If you really wanted to model a new highway, I'm sure Tropod or Redlotus or someone would find some time to get it in game, but you gotta model it first.

Highways are 3DS files, but you can change the textures, but only to replace the default textures. It takes time make textures and get them into the game, and tropod has alot of other things to do.

BTW: The 'Network Addon Mod Thread' is for transit related requests, and there is a new requests thread for modds.

Why does one drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?

Why is delivery by boat called a cargo and one by land called a shipment?

Okay - you guys can very easily replace the textures for highways to an asphalt texture. We just need someone to do it.

Downsides: Ground and elevated highways use the same texture. To change this would require modifying every single piece of ground highway in the game. Also, you cannot change the lane count without a lot of work modifying SC4Path files and RULs.

Bottom line: Without serious work, all you can do is change the color.

Well, it sounds like what you're describing looks exactly like Avenues, and the highway in that picture looks like a normal road. Why not use those? The highways in the game are just the concrete versions common in US urban areas. I typically have no large cities in my regions, so I never use Highways, I use Avenues instead, with highway speeds.

I think that the whole point of this is to make highways look like your own counties setup.

Here in Australia 99% of our highways are just a heavy duty bitumen road. But due to being heavy duty it also carries the traffic capacity of a highway.

So making the highway in SC look like bitumen or something just means you will be able to make a road that has highway capacity but looks like your own countries road system.

It would be interesting to see some more realistic highway designs in Simcity 4. For example, here in Connecticut we have just about everything imaginable. There are highways with wide grassy medians, and some with a Jersey barrier separating lanes of traffic. Some highways are 4 lanes with no shoulders, while others may be 10 lanes with left and right shoulders. Most Connecticut highways have asphalt surfaces, but there are still a few that have concrete surfaces.

Still I'm waiting for the day when a mod for underground interchanges becomes available...so I can build an underground expresway similar to the new Central Artery Tunnel in downtown Boston.

Seems like not many people paid attention to what Ardecila said.  Stop fantasizing about more lanes unless you're willing to do it.  Now, let's ask the question ... is anybody willing to edit the textures?  And if somebody is, do they have to re-map the textures to the S3D models?

The highways in SC4 do leave much to be desired: Different textures based on different areas. Also consider rural vs urban highway design. I think another interesting element is since (at least in the U.S.) theres always at least one part of any highway that's under construction at any given time, highway construction site tiles would be an iteresting addition.
