very impressive update, utora - sorry i didn't get a chance to vote in the most beautiful contest, but everytime i would take a look, my internet connection would decide to only show a few of the pictures.
i really like your alien city, as well. i recognize some of the buildings, others not so much, but i am guessing many are Japanese BATS.
once again, very nice work.

andrew george: actually I've been inspired by some beautiful pics from this thread:
I can only dream of creating such a skyline!!
Mr Cinatit: good to hear from you again! As far as I know there's only one japanese BAT: the Htin industrial building with the weird insect-like shape. There's nothing here which isn't available on the STEX! Don't have much time to provide links here, 'cause within 7 hours from now, college is calling again! I'll let you know! Thanx anyway for the reply! About the contest: that update was probably far too big! I guess I lost myself in my enthusiasm!

I was wondering: a lot of people are visiting this cj, but (except a few frequent repliers) almost nobody frequently posts to this cj!! I also wonder, does the story interest you? Most people just seem to look at the pics. Nothing's wrong with that, but tell me why would I invest a lot of time in a story nobody reads?? This doesn't motivate me much to hold on to this cj...

If I don't receive replies, I won't know. I don't care if it's just a few words or a long detailed reply (I prefer the latter!!), but I'd like to ask all of you readers out there: please reply if this cj interests you!!!

Don't give up on this journal! This is one of my favorite journals! And I am one of those who reads the journal. It is awesome... your creativity and pictures! It happens with almost every journal, the ratio between views and replies is outrageous. You would think more people would reply because so many have viewed!

But I understand what you mean by no one seeming interested. With city journals, some might be interested and some won't. But without a doubt you truly appeal the viewers and fans of your journal through the story and pictures! Just keep doing what you do so good because you got fans here ...

Well said, dscampbell! I can't pretend to know anything about Dutch sci-fi series', but I DO know that this in a very intriguing and entertaining CJ. Utora, it's difficult to stay motivated all the time - I can't really be bothered to do much with Norwich at the moment. There are always people who just like to look at pictures, people who like to read, people who do both, people who like to get involved & comment and so on, and these folks will do what they want to do. It seems to me that you have a nucleus of hardcore fans (of which I am one, as you well know) who would fall and cry if you stopped New Holland. The CJ looks as if YOU enjoy it very much - the level of detail in building style and story is evidence of that - and, after all, surely that's the most important thing? So, with that in mind, when's the next update? 42.gif

    Utora,
I have only recently returned to Simtropolis, and just started looking at *any* city journals -- mostly the pics, I admit -- I am fascinated at the different civil planning schemes that people include in their cities.

After your post, I went back and read the previous page -- it's great!

For me, it is a matter of having enough time to read all of the text in a journal -- but I *do* follow the ones I'm interested in. (And since I've just discovered yours, I must go back to the beginning, and start the great journey through your city!)

Don't give it up -- from what I've seen you've got a good storyline going 1.gif

Mr Cinatit, dscampbell, Mikeaut1, Andrew George, Hrhqoroses: Thank you all for your replies, they mean A LOT to me!19.gif And there's also a lot of truth in what you're saying! For now I'd like to say that I'm really happy you're following (or will be following hrhqoroses?) this cj so closely. I'm certainly not intending to stop, it's just frustrating sometimes to make an update and to see the nr of views increase like hell, but not to receive any comments! I'll get back on this, for now I really have to catch some sleep, because tomorrow another 9 hours of college ar coming up...
Andrew George: expect the next update this weekend, or maybe Friday. I've got a busy schedule, so I'll try to update twice a week! 1.gif

Utora, don't make the mistake in thinking that this cj is not loved by a great many people. I know that I visit here atleast twice a day when its on the first page. The story is THE best I have ever read here, the landscape is absolutely perfect for what your doing, and the cities awsomely detailed! It feels like every single city has its own history, and that each city lives in a way almost none can capture in SC4.

Also, most cjs don't get tons of comments. People prefer to come in just to take a look, and don't comment. I know it doesn't feel all that great to spend hours on an update, only to get 1 or 2 comments. Rest assured though, people are visiting your journal, and people do love and enjoy its awsome story and detail.

Good luck, and may this journal last to the very end! 1.gif

Utora fabulous CJ. I, like most people just like browsing most the time and usually don't take the time to comment. I have been following the story from the beginning and I enjoy it. You have an interesting plot line and I can't wait to see what develops and what direction your new country will take. I also liked the way you showed off all the towns in the contest, very nice idea. Keep up the good work.1.gif

Just read the whole story. Amazing region and some good storytelling so do go on. Your contest was a bit too much. Page with all the pics was about 14MB in size. Lucky I have a fast internet connection.
But with the large number of pics you use it would be good to host them offsite. A lot of people use imageshack or SPH (see the link in my sig). That your first try did not work out correctly should not stop you from using them.

PS: how did you do on those exams?

Mayor Tim: Thank you for this amazing compliment!!43.gif Of course you're right, but sometimes I find it hard to realize that a lot of people actually do read the story.. I always hope that new repliers will keep commenting, but in the end everyone should do as he/she likes; it strengthens my motivation so much when I read all these warm comments! I'll definitely hold on to this cj!
fgottes: it's good to know that you always follow the story! See? Now I know and that makes me feel good! Thanx for your comment!
flrscf: Thanks! You're probably one of the closest fans of this cj, and I thank you very much for that! And: of course I'll keep the updates coming (I never said I would totally quit!)
raindog: Thanks! good to hear you like it so much! I think writing a cj serves two main purposes: 1) you do it for your own pleasure (as Andrew George already mentioned) and 2) you do it to please all the readers out there, which you are one of.
You're right: I've been a little too enthusiastic with the contest and didn't realize not everybody has a fast internet connection. I'll host pics offsite from now on, I'll just try your link (but I'm always in constant fear that the pics somehow won't show up, as is the case with many other journals...) I'll keep backups of them on my pc. Hope I can enjoy your comments, advise etc. many times here!
Nijntje123: welcome to New Holland! tanx you like it so far! I always brighten my pics up a bit with color enhancement in Irfanview; and the watermod can be found on http://gizmo.lunarpages.com/  (waterflora mod: makes the water transparant) and I used it together with Joerg's waterpack, available on the STEX. This pack contains 10 different types of water; I used the caribbean blue setting, together with the waterfloramod. It's that easy!

To all great fans of this journal: I'm currently thinking about introducing you fans and repliers to this cj into the actual New Holland story; this means if you like to join the story and want to live in New Holland, I could introduce you as a character! You decide your name (could be your avatar) and character; later you'll see your protagonist back in the updates! Mr Cinatit is doing this already to his Timebomb journal, and I've seen it in other cj

Back again. I forgot to compliment you with the idea of the dikes. First time I see them on Simtrop. And I really gotta have those small waterways you made. (not Oppie's, I mean the smaller ones in your farmlands). I searched on the STEX but could not find them.
Are they yours? And if yes, will you release them?

flrscf, andrew george, dscampbell: thanx for the enthusiastic response! I still have to think of a way to realize this plan about you living in NH as a resident or something; expect a sign-up soon! the idea is that I give close instructions on what to do if you like to live in NH and play your part in the story etc etc. Be patient, I know now that there's an interest for it!
ChicAgo333: thanx a lot for your kind compliment!!!
raindog: thanx for the compliment on the dikes! They're made with groundlifters and (sometimes) with the regular terrain-tool. I put grass on them (grass-tile and grass-tiles with fence: Marrast sidewalks). But I'm thinking of using the no-beach mod (for a more realistic looking transition from dike to water).
About the streams: you're right they're not on the STEX. However there IS a PEG texture pack (uploaded by someone else) available on the STEX and I used these streamtextures on a custom lot.
It's very easy to create them yourself. If you use PEG's streampack (which uses these textures) you have small rocks and trees on the lots too, and I didn't want those. (but you don't need any PEGlots to create these streams; that's what I want to say. I realize that a lot of people don't have them..) Cheerz

EDIT: Mikeaut1: thanx! you're most welcome! Further instructions will follow... I'll put an official sign up form on this thread soon! Be patient!

You know, I just discovered the alien city update. I missed that!! That was a big surprise and it suided my hunger for news for a bit 2.gif

I have a request for you, can you m44.gifake a nijmegen type city in New Holland as well. On a hillside by a river bend 1.gif I would like to see that. Besides, Nijmegen is the oldest city of the Netherlands, being 2000 years of age.

    Keep on the good work!44.gif

Nijntje123: your Eradish Island trailer looked very promising! The mod looked indeed very good; is this supposed to be a teaser for your upcoming journal? If so, I definitely like to see it! En: droom maar fijn van de volgende update!!2.gif
flrscf: there seems to be a no-beachmod/grass beach mod. I saw it in Mayor Tim's newest journal, he also explains where you can get it: it's on the STEX he says
Josh1027: Welcome to New Holland! Glad you liked the Alien City. Shmails' Martian waterpumps were a blessing! Same can be said of Tragicomicus' BATs; thanx for commenting and hope to see you soon!
dscampbell: a Nijmegen type of city? Hmmmm... I'll see what I can do. I googled around a bit and found some pics and maps of it:
    /idealbb/files/NMG1.jpg

I took a closer look at my NH region map and found some possibly suitable sites:
    /idealbb/files/site1.jpg

    /idealbb/files/site2.jpg

    /idealbb/files/site3.jpg

It's up to you to choose one; I can't make any promises on when I'll start building it, because first some other towns must be developed. Takes a lot of time and I have a very busy schedule!

My father works in Nijmegen, maybe I will live there next year! So I know this city a little bit. My father has a small appartment on the Waalkade. BTW dscampbell, do you live in Nijmegen?

And I think the first site is the most suitable one19.gif.

The first site does have a gooed riverbend that looks like it would work ok. I would just throw overboard the north and south thing and put it on the north side of the river. Up side down so to speak 2.gif

lol that your dad's place as well as mine can be seen on that pic flrscf! I live all the way to the utmost right. Well ok, it's just outside the pic. Oh and that also answers your question about where I live 1.gif

I'm glad you are concidering building a city like nijmegen in NH! really cool! I know you'll do a great job so that's worth the wait 44.gif

take a glance over at my Kiphton Bay journal...while it really isn't all that similar, it is basically the same concept, i.e., rowhouses gone wild (huh...that could be a best selling DVID...Get your copy of Rowhouses Gone Wild...see these rowhouses do things you never expected, only for $19.99)...
uh...anyway, you can kind of get the idea of what i am going with by that picture, and actually, the above picture has given me a couple of additional ideas.
    keep up the great work.
