Figured I'd make this cause a search pulled up a 2 year old thread. Who here is a huge anime/manga fan? I am.

I just ordered Vol. 1 of Blue Exorcist off Amazon. It'll be here tommorow, yay!

Not so much on manga anymore but I am pretty big on anime. Looking forward to how the 2013 Summer anime season shapes up for what first episodes have left to air. So far it's turning out well. Comiket 84 is next month, too. I'll be more excited as it draws nearer.

One of my precious DVD boxsets is a three-volume set for "Saiunkoku Monogatari" ("The Story of Saiunkoku"), released in Region 1 just before Geneon pulled out of the North American market in 2007.  I happened yesterday to see that set offered on Amazon.com as used for US $7126.54...egads!  Not that I would ever sell my set...I'm apparently a sucker for these sorts of shoujo stories.  This is the most pastel pink DVD box in my house.

Sadly, I will likely never see a companion "Saiunkoku Monogatari 2nd Series" boxset to continue the series with the same English voice actors.  I know, subs are usually better, but this one had the English voice for Light Yagami from "Death Note" playing an idiot airhead king in Fantasy China.  I watched "Saiunkoku" before "Death Note," and so I could only hear the former's clueless palace idiot in the latter's demonic morality tale.  Most of my friends watched "Death Note" before "Saiunkoku," and so they can only hear the ruthlessly calculating killer flirting about in the flower-filled bishounen palace harem.  Polar opposite genres brought together by a single voice...it's surreally brilliant.

Thankfully, while DVD online prices reach levels of absurdity, we can still legally freely stream "Gintama."

Omigosh, we must also finish the ongoing reboot "Space Battleship Yamato 2199"...I grew up with the original "Star Blazers" in the late 1970s, and now we can see it all again in theaters in updated animation.

Any One Piece fans here?

I'm interested in how the Dressrosa arc will turn out. If Doflamingo is a tenryuubito, what's the limit of his influence? And what's the nature of his Devil Fruit? This arc's gonna be super exciting xD

Yussss!! Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 has blown me away. I'm awaiting the last 8 episodes. Very excited to see what happens in the rest of the series.

There's a new Star Blazers series??? That was by far my favorite cartoon as a kid. Voltron and Tranzor Z was right behind. If there is a new Star Blazers series I have got to get it!!!!

It's still running in Japan, with volumes coming out first as theatrical releases and then on disc and television.  The final volume installment is supposed to come out at the end of this summer.  We can hope that a second season with the Comet Empire will eventually follow...after all, even Star War's "Imperial March" pales before the White Comet Empire's "Imperial Space Disco."

For those of us in the U.S., a "Star Blazers 2199" is rumored, but, until then, we can import the current discs, or stream the show with subtitles online.

The "Star Trek" reboot is supposed to be the big geek event of the year, but, I'm much more enraptured with the Yamato remake.  The '70s animation of the original series is admittedly showing its age, so it's wonderful to see the beloved show redrawn in high definition.

I've never heard of it being called "Star Blazers". I know it as Space Battleship Yamato. I've seen through episode 18.

I am a "fan" of the S&W seires, which seems to have run for three seasons. I quite like it (despite the fact that every video is strangely warn about nothing, seriously, there isn't anything inappropiate in it so far), but a bad drawback is that its mostly in jap (D:) and I have to stick with the subtitles. I have been viewing it on YT so thats why, english versions are cencored due to "copyrights". Either way, it makes me laugh and its a great series so far.

Don't feel left out.  I have oodles of Nihongo but little interest in any anime or manga.

That being said, I did read Inachuu no Takkyu-bu (The Ping Pong Club) (in the original Japanese because now I'm just bragging hah hah hah) which is probably the funniest and often grossest comic book of any kind I have ever read.  The accompanying anime series was just as off-the-wall awesome as the manga, and the mangaka, Furuya Minoru, is kind of a big deal here.  I did like Akira and have the DVD, as well as the pretty awesome Cowboy Bebop anime series, which is almost completely unknown here.  Cowboy Bebop is FAR more popular back Stateside than it is here.  Small wonder, too.  It uses so much American music and scenery that the appeal is lost on the hardcore anime fans here.  I guess there just isn't enough moe service for them.  Whatever.

Also, while the space disco thing certainly is 70s-riffic, it's no Imperial March

Oh yeah, and does Avatar: The Last Airbender count as anime?  Because I loved every second of that!  It even served as the final bit of inspiration for my novel!

The Imperial March is the best piece of music ever written. End of debate.

Anyway back on topic I haven't seen much true anime, but like Spidey I have seen Avatar. That was a good series and I certainly liked that. They didn't show the last book chapter though on Rollercoaster which sucked but then again I never got round to reading The Deathly Hallows so...

I saw Pokemon back in the day. It was alright but rather predictable and dull in the plot. I saw like three episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh! before becoming absolutely bored with the show. A card game? Really? Also I have watched Marine Boy which is alright wtvr.

I do like the graphical style of anime though.

So I watched the imperial march.  Right next to it, I found this.  Lord of the Rings Symphony conducted by the composer.

I'm a serious "Slice of Life" kind of guy. Azumanga Daioh, Love Hina, I even recently watched a short series about teenagers stuck in a High School Limbo after dying so they can be given a second chance in finding peace in a familiar setting before moving on. I have to say, -*spoilers*- at the end when the group of kids finally accepted death and found peace and started "vanishing" (moving on) I had major tears. I can't remember the title.

Nah, technically no. It's an American production.

I just watched the live action version of Space Battleship Yamato and WOW I was impressed. I think even a tear or two slipped past my eyes at the end of the movie. I had no idea there was a live action movie till I saw this thread. So thanks Alexthegamer for starting this thread!!!!

The funniest manga I've read is "Yotsuba&!". It's categorize as slice of life but I don't know if there is any 5 years old kid with green hair. Sadly, the author refuse to make it into an anime.

Angel Beats? I saw that in the anime club at university and I liked it, though it would have been better if I didn't end up missing parts as I had to go home. I like Azumanga Daioh (and Yotsuba&!) and I have the manga of those (or at least what's available in English), didn't much care for Love Hina after reading the first manga volume though. Haruhi Suzumiya and Mirai Nikki are currently the ones I am most interested in, though it's interesting, as I first saw Mirai Nikki the same year in anime club that I saw Angel Beats, but I didn't like it then, most likely because I ended up missing parts, like the very first episode, so I had no idea what was going on. Then last year, anime club showed it again (well, the first 9 episodes at least), and this time I actually got to see it from the start, so stuff made more sense.

For you slice of life fans, hunt down and watch Nichijou (Daily Life).  The manga was boring and sucked and was told in sequence, but the anime, ooooh, the anime.  It's darn near Inachuu levels of hilarity, and the erratic jumping around in time just made it that much funnier, like those old X-Men Animated Series clips where it's just a bunch of random stuff from the series spliced together nonsensically.  Nichijou is great, and I'm glad someone mentioned slice of life because it's just about the only other anime that I know.

There are a few anime and manga that I enjoy.

In the manga compartment I really enjoyed Gantz, it had some very interesting characters in there. Also, the graphic depictions of sex and violence were quite enjoyable. Furthermore, I love Uzumaki and all the other horror stuff Junji Ito wrote. Some really disturbing stuff, but at the same time a very addictive read.

In the anime department I absolutely love Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex. I've got both seasons on dvd and it is my absolute favorite anime ever. Closely followed by Code Geass (giant robots!). Then there is also Higurashi no naku koro ni, another horror/thriller anime that I simply adore. Very interesting premise as well. Then there is of course Death Note, but I only really like that one up to a certain point. After that it just gets stupid.

Ive watched Bleach as well, but all the filler got to me. And since Bleach I have strong dislike for most shounen stuff. That stuff is so repetitive and overly reliant on a select number of tropes. Blegh.

In my opinion Nichijou started out great but wound up just being "meh".

If it's slice of life, I could name several good ones to try your hand at.

Yuyushuki

Tamayura

Aria the Animation (plus 2 successive seasons)

Genshiken

GJ-bu

Hyakko

Hyouka

K-ON

Ichigo Mashimaro

Joshiraku

Toradora!

Working!!

Yuru Yuri

Did you know they've come out with a new Ghost in the Shell? It's going to be a series of 4 theatrical releases, each an hour long. The characters' background stories and character designs are different this time around. Well, almost everyone looks the same except for Motoko. But she still looks great. The first episode was released a few weeks ago.

Yes I've heard and I'm interested in seeing what they did with it. Still, its a new continuity, and though the series is great, I liked the movies a lot less.

Since it seems like Ghost in the Shell is now one of those series that will get reboots until the end of time hopefully eventually one of them will be more faithful to the manga.  Oshii did his own thing with the source material and did a good job of it, and from the episodes I saw, the tv series was like a watered down version of Oshii's GITS, plus more action sequences.  There's not much info about this new OVA but it looks like it has a life of its own.

They need to put the punk back in cyberpunk.  :P
