Just curious about what are your favourite SAM textures, if you have any. Thanks for participating!

I have all sets installed, but only because unchecking options in the installer doesn't unclutter the menu.

My favorite is the gravel texture. Next would be Toroca's dirt texture, but that's not used in any of the lots that would naturally go with it, so I don't quite know what to do with it, except use them in forests. I voted for the red bricks as second favorite, even if I don't care for that center line, but once in a blue moon it sees some use..

I like the klinker one, but that looks Mediterranean, which doesn't fit my regions. The same is true for the Japanese one. I rarely use the rural set. I don't care for the rest.

Fix the last question.  I wanted to vote no or maybe.

I like dirt roads for farming areas, including the farm towns.  I also like brick herringbone for upscale suburbs.  Sometimes I have dirt roads in industrial parks, and sometimes gravel.

For a real challenge, try running without roads at all.  Highways are OK, and short interface stretches for ramps, but try and stick to streets.  Game hates you when you do that.

OK, my votes:

- I use all the SAM sets. I just like to have some variaty in my regions, though I stick to a few sets. I rarely used Toroca's Dirt Streets, and I've not used the Klinker Streets and Japanese streets yet.

- The Herringbone Street (SAM 2) is my favourite set. It reminds me of the streets at home. It looks very dutch in that respect and it has some coziness associated to it. It's really good for residential and older commercial streets.

- The Asphalt Streets (SAM 7) are my favourite for industrial areas. They just look like the narrower version of the roads, making them blend in nicely.

- Grass textures for the Japanese set? Yes, I like my grass on my streets!

- Japanese road textures? I'm curious how that will turn out ;)

- Was this poll useful? I voted for the middle one ;)

Best,

Maarten

I really dig the asphalt texture. It really helps make my game seem more like what I have in my own town. I haven't used any others yet, but I want to soon try the cobblestone and dirt textures too.

I like the dark asphalt textures, those are my favourite. Currently SAM10 is empty for me... I should get on that. At least I thought it was... maybe it isn't. :P

My second favourite is the redbrick, perfect for historic areas. Though I also love the dirt and gravel ones, perfect for construction scenes. :)

One SAM I would like to see is wide streets. This would be very useful for industrial parks, as trucks need wide swings to move, and footpaths are probably not needed.

Not possible, I'm afraid.  SAM is just an overlay texture set for regular streets.  For industrials you could lay down a double street, but I don't think it looks like what you want.  Maybe we need an add to the NWM (four lane street).

^ Moose is right. We could make wider textures, but the paths would be totally messed up... I like the idea though

Due to the seemingly lack of interest so far, I might do a Tulep first :thumb:

    Nope. Overhangs.

The paths don't matter, so long as they're there and in the right position, and they can be transposed further away as well.

Overhangs make it possible to create a wider road, which is key if you want said road to be diagonal. Case in point: The NWM.

I only got 8 textures? I guess the other two (klinker and japanese) come with NAM31, which I don't use...

Anyway - I could totally do without the (imo useless) Parking textures, the Herringbone (the Red Brick is much better) and the Trolca Dirt...

The Red Brick would be even nicer without the line in the center.

The Cobblestone is nice, even though its pattern gives it an illusion of 'bulging'.

I'd like to see a plain IND texture (grungy, cracked concrete with some grass sticking through ;-) and another cobblestone texture with a larger pattern than the current one...

Grass? What for? The rare occasions when that is needed can be served differently. SAM should be exclusive for heavy usage modules... :-)

Really? I thought the parking lot textures were ingenious. I'm fairly new back to SC4, so don't know any other way you'd be able to recreate actual shopping centers with huge parking lots, where the store front is not street side. There might be another way of doing that, but SAM seems to make it nice and simple to use.

I admit that using SAM textures next to streets can be finicky, but still doesn't stop me from trying to have both connected without SAM running a muck on my streets.

@infamousjbe: Oh, I was more concentrating on the question what my favorite SAMs are... :-)

For parking - well, there are so many nice parking lots and textures available, I just can't 'live' with that one single tex only ;) Using a SAM texture for an access street works fine for me. But sure, everybody has their own ideas, which is good that way... I wouldn't mind if there were 20 different SAM textures to choose from LOL

Slight confusion, I don't mean to replace sidewalks with grass ;)

Unlike other streets, SAM 10 streets doesn't have the $/$$/$$$ grass that appears along the sidewalks in low density zones.

The question could translate to  "would you like low density textures for SAM 10?"

Overhangs?  Will that solve the need for more pathed lanes on the road?

Ah, thanks for the clarification... I misunderstood indeed :-)

Not for me, really - but I won't mind... as long as it can be overridden by anyone's personal preference :-)
