My problem is I expect games to be like the games I grew up with and anything "more advanced" doesn't really appeal to me. That is probably a lot of why I am mostly following Nintendo these days. They haven't really changed much, their new work remains true to their old work.

Compare to Sony, where I love my PS2 but don't see them ever making another console like it since they've moved on.

I broke down and bought an Xbox 1 a couple months back. It's fun playing video games again. I hadn't really played much in the past few years.

Not to change the subject or anything but I realized something the other day I thought you would all find mildly interesting. Aside from the house where I grew up, which is on a road, every address I have held has been on an avenue. Henry, Wissahickon, California and Ashford Avenues. Plus my current address, which I will refrain from mentioning for obvious reasons. Weird coincidence.

Say wuah? They make it flow backwards when they dye it? I had no idea.

Larks, did you get a copy of that Ghostface album that came out a few months back? It's pretty awesome.

Nono, not when they dye it. The Chicago River was made to permanently flow backwards a century ago in order to flush the sewage and filth out of it. It now drains through a canal into another river that eventually reaches the Mississippi rather than into Lake Michigan.

4780: I find it impressive to make the river flow backwards I take it this would only be possible if the river flowed through a very flat plain? I'm not familiar with the topography of Chicago.

I'm from a few hours east of Chicago, and let me tell you, the middle of the US is a series of massive, unending plains.  They're great.  We literally call them the Great Plains.  They're right next to the Great Lakes.  If they weren't so great, you would almost think we were spouting hubris when we named them, but seriously, you have to see it to believe it.

It was possible to make the Chicago River flow backwards because of the topography, yes. The portion through the middle of the city that got reversed is pretty flat, like most rivers are near their mouths. It's a short river with a slight ridge to its west. On the other side of said ridge is the upper reaches of the Des Plaines River, which is part of the Mississippi watershed and at a slightly lower elevation. So, dig a canal wide enough to carry the river's flow and the natural tendency of water to flow downhill does the rest.

Now all the sewage is St Louis' problem!

St. Louis actually sued to attempt to stop the project for exactly that reason, but they were ultimately unsuccessful.

It isn't and never was even remotely a problem for them, though, since given the rate at which rivers flow it takes at least a couple weeks before any water from Chicago reaches St. Louis and that is plenty of time for any organic matter in the water to decay away to safe levels. Not to mention that given the other tributaries along the way (including the Mississippi and Missouri rivers!) it is plenty diluted as well.

The Potomac River which is between Washington, DC and Virginia, is a tidal river.  It changes flow direction frequently.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

Washington... Quite a majestic city. Museums, monuments, memorials... Truly is it the modern Rome. I was near there (within skyline distance) for my aunts wedding on Tuesday.

Speaking of, I have a sad story to tell. So I was at the reception sitting with my brother and some cousins at this awful restaurant. So the waitress comes by to ask the 6 of us our orders, but she skipped me. Then she came back, with 5 orders. Mine not there, of course. I them attempted to ask if i could order, but I was again ignored. Than i decided to get up and see if I could get ahold of someone, but I could not, and I went back to the table with nothing. My cousin's boyfriend, of all people then decided to get someone's attention and succeeded immediately. Oh, and who was the order given to? Yup, not me. I know I'm short and quiet, but that was one of the worst experiences I've ever had.

Oh, and as far as rivers go, Philly's rivers are dirty and disgusting. The Delaware's almost brown and the Schyukull (even I can't spell it) is only slightly better.

Any section of a river that's tidal is fed by an upstream section that is not, though - so even if the river does shift flow directions with the tides, it will still flow out more than in and have a net flow towards whatever it flows into.

This is very different from the Chicago River, which naturally carried water into Lake Michigan for millennia before human intervention made it start draining water out of Lake Michigan and into the Mississippi system. Indeed, they had to install a lock at the former mouth (now source) of the river to control how fast water from Lake Michigan flows into it because otherwise the currents would be too strong for boats to safely navigate it.

Battlefield Hardline was a trip, I hate how the max difficulty is not much harder then Veteran though, I always like a challenge, there were only two challenging areas though and you had to beat the game to unlock hardest so I feel less invested playing it all over.

I don't so much mind having to unlock hard mode since if you can handle hard you can handle normal.

But I've seen games which make you beat it on normal in order to unlock easy mode... thus defeating the entire purpose of easy mode's existence.

Well, thanks for the info on the rivers and such. I recall being corrected a number of years back as to which direction the Chicago River flowed but I had no idea they changed said flow willingly. Despite the simple way they went about doing it it's pretty cool.

I should talk to my nephew about it. His ancestor was Geroge Washington Goethals. He might take an interest in such things. Btw, if you're from NY or NJ you've been pronouncing his name wrong, much like Andrew Carnegie's. :P

    Which games are these?

Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 is one example where you need to beat the game to unlock what is explicitly a lower difficulty mode.

A more implicit example is Megaman X6. When you beat the game, at the end of the credits it gives you a special cheat code. Using this code gives you X's ultimate armor allowing you to tear through everything much more easily. So, this is "unlock easy mode by beating normal" in spirit, although you can cheat by just looking the code up online.

ChronoTrigger had a thing where when you beat the game an option for "New Game +" popped up on the opening menu, where the + meant that you started a new game with everything you had when you finished your previous game: however many levels/experience, weaponry/armor, hit points, etc etc.  Tearing through the first 75% of the game with the + was really easy and really fun.

Hahaha, nah, we were watching at home.  Going to sumo is really expensive, you buy a ticket to use a 4-person box and those run from about US$400 on up.  Of course he had better seats than we had when we went last year, a few rows up RIGHT next to the hanamichi where the sumo wrestlers walk by.  He looked like he was enjoying it, though.

EDIT: Also, ChronoTrigger is not just my favorite RPG, it's in my top five favorite games of all time.
