4021: I ran the needle over the paper but it didn't work out as well, and I'm not peeling it off.

In other news, I went to an amazing restaurant last night! If Australia had the Michelin rating this would probably be a 2-3 star restaurant. But for a bill of $360, I would hope it was good.

    some group called pearl jam

Do you seriously not know who Pearl Jam is or are you being snarky on purpose?

No idea, I wasn't listening to music in 1994 but according to wiki it is a rock band.

How do they put a track under the label? There is a hole in the middle for the spinner thing.

Beats me but a song is in there somewhere. Whatever song it is, it's not available with the rest of the album on the digital download that comes with the record. That's not the only quirk. Side A plays in the opposite direction and supposedly a hologram can be seen if a spot light is held directly above the spinning record. That's Jack White for you.

One of the more well known rock bands of the 90s. Not exactly some bunch of nobodies.

I suppose it's a matter of exposure, though. I remember hearing songs like "Jeremy", "Alive", and "Better Man" on the radio when I was younger with some frequency and found them to be quite memorable. But I can see where you wouldn't be familiar with them if you simply never cared for that sort of music... or were too young to be paying attention to such things when they were still receiving radio play (honestly I betcha most of my cousins who are currently in college wouldn't know who Pearl Jam is if I asked).

I never had much exposure to music as a little kid, only later on in life it became more important to me around middle school so like 2004 is when I really started getting into it, One of the first albums I ever bought was Encore, the song Like Toy Soldiers was a song that really woke me up and made me realize how important music is, after that I started looking for songs that reflected how I felt and how other people were dealing with the things I was like missing family, It became really personal to me after that.

If your exposure to music started in 2004 I can totally understand you not knowing who Pearl Jam is.

That said, I find it interesting that you say the first song you ever felt inspired you is derivative of an earlier work. Eminem is an artistic genius, no argument there. And his adaptation of Toy Soldiers is quite good. But then, there is the original:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvdLovAaYzM

Which is also a very heart-wrenching song, just in a somewhat different context (about a woman losing her boyfriend, rather than about a man lamenting drama he's been caught up in).

I always liked the Pilots better. Tiny Music... Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop was a better all-around album than anything Pearl Jam put out.

4029: I liked No. 4 better. I found whilst their previous albums had some great tracks, No. 4 worked consistently as an all rounder and no track felt out of place.

Oh wow, Never knew that either, I noticed a lot of the songs I listened to had an original in GTA 5 which was like a mind-blown experience, Never knew any of them before the samples.

    Like this

And this one really surprised me.

There were plenty others but I couldn't find an edited version.

Yeah, rap artists love to sample older songs. A lot of their audience doesn't recognize the original work but for those of who do it bakes us go "hey, wait a minute, you stole that from..."

I'd go Tiny Music..., No. 4, STP, Purple, Core, and Shangri-La-Dee-Da, with Shangri-La-Dee-Da being massively disappointing after the opening track, Core being an average grunge album, Purple showing some alternative skills, STP being a pretty kick-ass evolution into the new millenium, and No. 4 and Tiny Music... being awesome, complete, and utterly underappreciated and underrated albums in all of rock music.

A lot of times in rap music (and occasionally pop when they sample or cover) I've heard the original and suddenly get a crave to go listen to some of that old music.  A lot of it is Motown, and Motown produced some truly great stuff.

I still say Purple is one of the best albums ever. It is by far my favorite album by STP. The band I can't get enough of lately is Sleigh Bells. My cousin played Treats for me a few years ago but I forgot all about. Probably because it was St. Patrick's Day and the two of us did some pretty serious boozing. I bought that album earlier this week and I was all "oh yeah, I've heard this before." I cannot get enough of it at the moment.

Any chance you a fan of Velvet Revolver? I like to think of it as the good members of Guns and Roses + Scott Weiland.

I understand that these days GNR is kind of a joke and even amongst fans Axl is a bit of a train wreck. However, Guns N Roses was the epitome of awesome and simply wouldn't have been the same without him. I'm a huge fan. They rock. But I'm in my thirties, what the heck do I know?

As for the rest... all I can say is, Larks, this is how most of us feel when you start talking about obscure rap music. :P

Haha you got it, Obscure pretty much my middle name, just got to file the legal paperwork I got over 2,000 artists on my playlist and maybe you would be lucky to know 5 of them.

That was about right for me.

GNR was awesome, Appetite for Destruction is an awesome album.  So far as Velvet Revolver goes, I liked their song Slither and was disappointed by the rest of the CD when I listened to it.  That was years ago now, maybe I should give it another shot, but I remember feeling as disappointed by that as I was by Shangri-La-Dee-Da (one good song and a heaping helping of 'meh').  I didn't like their ballad-y style songs, ballads just aren't my thing, like, I like Metallica, but I HATE "The Unforgiven" and "The Unforgiven 2" and "Nothing Else Matters" because they're just so BORING.  I know that every song can't be "Am I Evil" or "Hit the Lights" but by god, I still want that!  Incubus'  Megalomaniac (overly politicized mailed-in record) was also hideously disappointing to me (although I should revisit it to see if my feelings have changed on the matter).

Any of you guys have an album that disappointed you?

And let's face it, GnR hasn't been relevant since Use Your Illusion was released (brilliant albums, so different yet so similar!). Chinese Democracy was an absolute joke.

Yeah I haven't listened to Chinese Democracy since the first time. No need to give that album a second listen. it sucks. A number of other albums have left me disappointed but none seem to stick out more than any other.

I can contribute nothing to this current discussion, aside from scarcely-related tangents.

Weird Al has a new album out.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

4048: I stopped listening to him when I was 14.

I've had Temporary Ground (third track of the Lazaretto album) stuck in my head for days. It's a great blues rock/folk song.

I'd never heard of Jack White prior to him coming up here recently and I still as far as I know have never heard any of his songs.

But I've already decided I have beef with him, for the offense of releasing vinyl-exclusive tracks. I keep my music digitally, in order to add those songs to my collection I would have to purchase the LP, then either purchase a record player or borrow one from family, and then rig up a means of recording audio from the output of said record player.

I can appreciate the gimmicks involved in the LP and don't mind them in and of themselves. But the fact that those two songs and the alternate version of the twin-groove song are not made available digitally is an affront to the 21st century, and I want nothing to do with anyone who thinks it's cool to deny content to people who aren't record collectors.

I like Jack White a lot, I like a lot of the music he's made, both by himself and in his bands (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs), but the vinyl-only thing is a HUGE turnoff.  My music snobbery only extends so far.

@ROFLYoshi: I'm sorry to put down ballad-y Metallica, everyone has their preferences.  I just prefer to JUMP IN THE FI-YAH!
