There are interesting things to see in other places, and certain areas are just tourist places (like here, apparently, and Kyoto), but I don't especially enjoy being a tourist.  I'd rather be near where I live, then I'm not really an outsider and I get to go home at night and sleep in my own bed.  Sleeping in your own bed is underrated.

Tourism is, well, nice things for income devisa in most country. What I quite don't like is, some behavior of the tourist, as well as us behavior towards them...

So, yay!

I'm so much of an urbanite at heart that I feel at home in any city.   Aside from Home Sweet Philly, New York and Washington are my favorites.  Baltimore's cool as well.

I do my best to be welcoming to tourists since my city has a fairly good reputation as being a place where a tourist can expect as much. Of course I used to work at a hotel where I was required to be welcoming but even still.

I see two sources of tourist annoyance. One is that, when there are a lot of them, it creates unpleasantly large crowds. Another is that they will act differently from locals in ways that create conflict. In New York, one of the biggest gripes we have with tourists is that they walk slowly and walk side by side, thus hogging the sidewalk and getting in everyone's way.

Tourist tip #1 for New York: this ain't the laid back countryside you're used to. New Yorkers like to walk fast. If you are not going to do so as well, proper etiquette demands you at least make some reasonable effort to get out of our way. It's not like elsewhere where you're fine until someone says "excuse me". Here, if someone is forced to say "excuse me", you've already committed a faux pas.

Of course, I'm plenty guilty of the opposite offense: walking fast and squeezing around people in other cities like I would here, leaving them wondering "whoa, where is that jerk headed in such a hurry?" :P

When I was in New York last month plenty of people were walking side by side. At rush hour on Avenue of the Americas, there were plenty of business people standing around. I didn't take the subway that time, but I did the previous, but that was a Saturday, slit almost doesn't matter.

3582: My main gripe with tourists is the lack of English. I believe if you visit a country, you should have a basic grasp of the language beforehand. Having been guilty of going to a French country without the language skills, communication was very hard and on the other end, it's hard for me to work with tourists if they cannot understand me.

Japanese tourists often have a guide, and there actually are many people who have extremely rudimentary English skills.  That being said, the vast majority have no idea what they're doing when they go abroad, and locals in Guam and Hawaii are actively prepared for their arrival with Japanese speaking staff.  When my wife and I went to Guam, the staff was visibly relieved to hear us speak English with no problems whatsoever.  I get the feeling that most of the time it's a bit of a craps shoot so far as communication goes there...

To be honest, I don't see a whole lot of tourists in Pittsburgh. Most of the time it's at a Pirate game if I do. I can never tell if the people taking the segway tours are tourists or locals. They sure look like tourists.

Language barriers can happen even without tourists. There are a lot of immigrants in NYC who speak Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, or one of the many languages of the Indian subcontinent as their native tongue. Their mastery of English varies.

We have tourists that speak Jerseyese, can never understand them so we just stare blankly and wait for them to walk away.

It's interesting that the Japanese name for "Golden Week" is a transliteration of the English name, rather than the words that would mean that in Japanese. Especially considering that the concept originated in Japan. You guys really like doing that, huh? :P

As Larks pointed out, they'll be playing St. Louis. I'll be down there myself on Wednesday and I'll be at the game against NYY on the 16th. Let's go Bucs!

I have a bad association with baseball. Once, my cousin was playing baseball and he hit the ball really hard and it cracked the screen on my GameBoy Advance SP. It cracked the inside of the screen, so I could never play it again :(

It's interesting that the Japanese name for "Golden Week" is a transliteration of the English name, rather than the words that would mean that in Japanese. Especially considering that the concept originated in Japan. You guys really like doing that, huh? :P

The 'official' term to use is "大型連休" (ohgata-renkyuu) which means "big-type vacation."  There are several national holidays grouped right around now, and they are Green Day, the Showa Emperor's Birthday, Children's Day, and Citizen's Day.  NHK uses "大型連休" because the term "Golden Week" is actually an advertising term (that link says it's from a movie company, but I've heard it was originally used by department stores, too).  For Children's Day, they hang colorful koinobori (carp flags) and eat kashiwa mochi, but for everything else, there really aren't any official customs that I know of.  It's just kind of a free-for-all set of sightseeing and traveling days.  They dedicate their vacations here to that long-honored Japanese tradition of waiting in line, be it on the highway, at a sightseeing spot, or for a table in a restaurant.

Back to baseball, I love to see the first-place Tigers stomping all over the AL Central.

I bought some cheap headphones at a Chinese 1 imports store out of curiosity, just listened to some music with them and it sounds like the sound when a car with heavy bass drives by, such a muddy sound lol.

Looks like its back to audio technica for me.

I've been to two Phillies games thus far.  I love the Phillies, I will always root for them, but I admit - they suck.
