I don't think fillet has anything to do with the word 'fancy'.  The definition of fillet is 'a fleshy boneless piece of meat from near the loins or ribs of an animal".

The point is that foods described as a "fillet" are fancier and classier than anything a fast food place serves. Fillet mignon, fillet of sole, etc.

Oh, ok.  Sorry, totally misunderstood the point you were making.   My bad.  Usually when I think of fillet, I think of fish.  I've been to Chick-fil-a a few times.  It's actually not too bad.

What do you call American 'biscuits' in the UK. What do you get with a 3 piece dinner at KFC.

You go to KFC? Chick fil a is so much better.
2639: All I know about Chick - Fil - A is from the anti-homosexuality controversy a while back. Before that I hadn't heard of it.

That was just stupid, I'm not saying I support their position but they have as much of a right to choose to believe that as any business that chooses to believe in supporting equal marriage, It may be the right way to live, It may be the wrong way to live but in the end it is different for each person.

Besides that stance had been going on long long before the controversy, If freedom of views is eradicated what does that say for both sides if you squash one and let the other dictate?

That is one thing that irks me about New Yorkers. Do you really think that the only people in the US who know how to make a proper pizza live in such a tiny area? I think it's all in your head! :P Don't believe me? Come take a tour of Pittsburgh's finest pizzerias with me and I'll prove you wrong. Honestly the only thing different I notice about New York pizza is the size of the average slice.

I have had pizza at exactly ONE place outside of the NY area that stood up to NY pizza - a joint in San Diego called Bronx Pizza, owned and operated by a guy from The Bronx. So yes, I do actually think that as I have seen no evidence to the contrary. :P

But name what you think the best pizza place in Pittsburgh is and maybe I'll check it out next time I'm there.

New York pizza is hard to top. I'll give you that, but if you do find yourself out this way then go here or here. The latter is a personal favorite of my dad, who as you know is from Brooklyn.  To be honest I prefer to get a pie from Center Ave but I like to order my hoagies from R and B. They have a second shop in the next neighborhood.

However, not everyone at my favorite pizza place is qualified to make it if you ask me. Some of the teenagers there are capable of making a pretty horrendous pie so unfortunately, it's hit or miss. I imagine you are used to more consistency. So there's that.

I haven't been to Chik-fil-a in a minute but it is pretty good.

Thanks, Muck, info saved.

In terms of fast food I will hold that there is no place more awesome than Sheetz. We don't have them in New York, but the fact that I have to go to Pennsylvania to eat there just makes it better. You can't just walk down the street, you have to earn it!

Other than that, I prefer Burger King or Wendy's. McDonald's is very ubiquitous but really isn't that great. Five Guys is great but it fills me up so much that I feel gross afterwards. Checkers is cool but not top notch. White Castle, the food is crap but the concept is awesome; it's great when you're drunk at least. Jack in the Box is... eh. Carl's Jr/Hardees is pretty good. In-N-Out is decent but also goes into the "cooler in theory than in practice" category with White Castle. Roy Rogers is alright, another middle of the road place.

I have never eaten at Chick-fil-a (I refuse to on account of aforementioned homophobic policies of theirs), KFC (that style of chicken is not my thing), Subway (I don't eat sandwiches), or Taco Bell (I don't eat Mexican food).

But yeah, I do have a thing for fast food. :D

Calling taco bell Mexican food is quite comedic, Taco John's is far far better tasting.

2648: We don't have Taco Bell here. They are currently trying to build a Maccas in my town and the locals are furious about it. To the point where there's 24 hour security around the site and people have been arrested in relatively violent protests.

McDonald's is all over the place in the US. Nonetheless, there is a spot in northwestern Nevada that is 115 miles from the nearest one, this is the furthest from a McDonald's you can get in the continental US. Here is a map.

The guy who made that map went and hiked to this spot and ate some McDonald's there. :D

I know that map! :D Belgium has a very low number of fastfood restaurants. When you go to a city in one of our neighbouring countries, it's very obvious there are a lot more fastfood restaurants there. To give an idea: in Belgium, there are 171,417.80 people for every McDo, in the Netherlands it's only 72,587.47, Germany is even less: 56,867.94 people per restaurant. The UK: 52,340.67 people/restaurant, and surprisingly, the McDonald's density is the highest in France: 52,223.12! USA: 22,173.77 people/restaurant.

You see that Belgium occupies a strange position here. What's more, all of these countries have other fastfood chains, we don't (except for Quick, a chain active in France and Belgium, but even when you take that into account, there's not a lot of fastfood restaurants). No Burger King (they left the market some 20 years ago), no KFC,...

There are quite a few fast food places here, but the most numerous places to get food quickly to eat are the convenience stores.  They are EVERYWHERE in ridiculous numbers, too.  They have sections of already-made foods that just need to be popped in the microwave to eat.  They're not especially good for you (I suspect the salt content is quite high) but probably are a healthier-ish alternative to McDonald's.  We've got MosBurger and Freshness Burger which are way tastier but more expensive than McDonald's, and there are beef-bowl chains (gyuudon) that serve up super-cheap, tasty food quickly.  My favorite of these is Yoshinoya.  I believe Yoshinoya is in NYC and LA, so far as The States are concerned.  Maybe Seattle, too, thanks to the Japanese baseball fans.

Apparently there was one in New York but it has since closed.

This is to be expected: small restaurants in New York City often don't last long and spaces have a high turnover rate. You need to do exceptionally well to stay in business in this market just because your rent and other overhead costs will be very high. Often stores and restaurants close because their landlord raises their rent and they can't afford to pay the new rate. No matter as far as the landlord is concerned, the rental market is lucrative enough that the space won't stay vacant for long.

One consequence of these rising rents, though, has been that national chains are far more prevalent in the city than they were 20 years ago, since it's the local businesses that get squeezed out by it.

My cousin told me that Five Guys didn't do well in California because everyone considered it inferior to In N Out. I definitely make more than a few stops to In N Out when I'm in California but I disagree. Five Guys is far better.

I ate at Quick when I was in France and I thought it was delicious. I won a sundae or something desserty from a scratch off as well. I was already pretty full but I ate it anyway.

The last restaurant I worked at (Damon's Grill) closed because they didn't pay their rent. The amount owed was rumored to be approaching 6 figures. Whether or not that is true is a mystery to me. It seems a tad high but I have no idea what the monthly rent was for that place. It was pretty big. Just shy of 20,000 ft2 I'd say.

Five guys is the best burger and fries to me. Particularly with the peanuts.

When I was in San Diego, there were plenty of In 'N Out's around the whole area, but maybe one or two Five Guys. On the East Coast, in New York, Philly, Washington, Baltimore, and suburbs around all 4, there are more five guys than any other chai, other than McDonalds.

I've never had In N Out or 5 Guys, but Toledo did end up getting a 5 Guys... right after I moved back to Japan.  Wendy's all closed in Japan a year or three ago.  There are still maybe like 3 or 4 Burger Kings.  Of all the burgers I've eaten here, Freshness Burger is probably the best, but then again, it's Japan.  DO NOT expect a great burger if you come to Japan.  I've eaten several, including much cheaper ones, that simply blow Freshness away.  But you know, you take what you can get.  Here's where I get to be a sushi snob.  You think your sushi is good back where you live?  The crappy supermarket sushi here beats it.  Oh, and you can go to a sushi fast-food style place where you pay by the plate and sushi is delivered to you on a conveyor belt.  Those are awesome.  Cheap and tasty, but not the highest quality.  You can get REALLY good stuff if you're willing to pay for it, because even here, it's pricey.

That all of course depends on the belief that sushi is an edible substance. I disagree with that notion.

Certainly everything is expensive in Japan from an American perspective on account of the exchange rate. But do people in Japan actually think so, too? Usually when the cost of living is higher somewhere, so is the average household income.

Mmm, I have serious doubts about Bitcoins. Buying Bitcoins is not a very intelligent thing to do, I think, since the value is really based on nothing and they could be worthless in a few moments. The value has increased a lot, but that doesn't mean anything at all for the future. I know the value of real money is also based on (almost) nothing (hence why it is called fiduciary money, based on trust, in other words), but the difference is that at least there is a government that guarantees that you can use it (experiments with letting private banks print their own notes were a fiasco). Also the fact that a lot of people use real money helps to create more stability (on the other hand you have banks speculating and flash-trading, which doesn't help...).

    Edit: oops, 2 post rule...

What can you tell us about Kobe beef? I know very little but I hear it is very high quality. I've only heard of folks dining on Kobe burgers to be honest, which never made much sense to me. If the beef is so great then why mash it up into hamburger?

I don't think I ever ate at a Red Rooster when I was in Australia. Further, I don't recall eating at any exclusively Australian restaurants. I do recall having some excellent Thai food while I was there and the bar I worked in had a really great restaurant upstairs. The Royal Hotel in Paddington, Sydney. Mmmmmm, yummers. Of course across the street was a great little sandwich place that I ate at nearly every day. Ham sammies, my friends. Ham sammies.

Seriously, Duke. You don't like sandwiches? How does one arrive at such a ridiculous conclusion? :boggle:

Quite easily, by not liking the any of the things that typically get put on sandwiches.

And by having a general aversion to having multiple distinct food substances with clashing textures in my mouth at once. Even if I liked ham, lettuce, and tomato (in reality I do not like any of those things), I would want to take the sandwich apart and eat each of those components one at a time.
