So I wanted to make an RCI City for the big government achievement, only reason budget is red is because of the recycling plant which sells alloy (the yellow trash icon in the menu is due to alloy stacked in the recycling plant).

Agents: 49824 Work, 24912 Shop, 12707 Student, 4224 Tourists (All Low Wealth)

Jobs: 50814; Goods: 26586 (1674 Unsold but I have 4224 Low Wealth Tourists Buying Goods)

Train Commuters (4 Stations): 25,400

Street Commuters (2 Stations): 66,800

Bus Commuters (1 Station): 17,500

Services: 2 Fire Station (4 Trucks), 2 Clinics (6 Ambulance), 1 Police Precinct (22 Cars, 1 Prevention Van), 2 High Schools

The city took about 9-10 hours to make, and I was monitoring all maps and services the entire time.  It was a lot of fun!

I definitely wasn't able to do this before 2.0, due to traffic issues and fire issues.  With streetcars and buses now working properly I was able to eliminate all traffic issues.  Fire trucks were going to all fires so my city wasn't burning down every 5 min.  :)

There was some challenges though, I didn't have the large fire station, so buildings would abandon due to slow fire coverage, no helicopter either.  Even with 2 high schools, I was only able to educate half of my students, so crime, health, and fire were concerns I had to deal with accordingly, mostly crime.  I also had some issues with water, with the number of high density buildings, the buildings farthest from the water pump wouldn't get water in time, and my train station in the corner would shut down from time to time.  I put some water towers but they almost don't have anymore water supply (thus yellow water icon).

I highly recommend going for this achievement.

Yes no other city in the region, only this one.

I find that the only intersection for roads should be an avenue, and nothing else.  No road intersections with roads.  Ideally you want high density stacked next to each other, but sometimes medium density get in between the high density buildings, don't be afraid to demolish and remove residential zones until the high density builds next to the other high density building.  Good luck, your city looks really nice so far.

Some screenshots to show my progress:

I'm working on a medium density only RCI city.  So much harder.  :)

This is what I meant in another thread about the game being easy to play, but not so easy to play "correctly" or "well".

You're much better than me so I shouldn't comment, but imo you should spread your factories out a bit and get some trees in between them to stop the ground turning into a black bog around your industry.

    kgpurrs,

If it is not too much trouble, do you mind posting a screenshot of your bus stop layouts?  I am curious to see how you have your stops layed out for a city of 600k population.  I am still having issues with all buses with any city approaching only the 200k range...  Maybe I am putting too many or not enough stops?

Working month end close, so I won't have time to make screenshots for a few days.  I'm working on a traffic and mass transportation guide with a bunch of screenshots which I will share with the community likely this weekend if I have the time.

I can describe what you would see in the screenshots though:

Trains: I put a train station in each corner of my city.  Effectively moving most vehicle traffic from the middle of my city to the 4 corners of my city leaving the middle clear for service vehicles and mass transportation (busses and streetcars).

Streetcars: Placed on each side of the avenue of road intersections, thus making the entire road green.

Buses: One bus stop for each road in between avenues.  If you have multiple roads not connected to avenues on each end but only one end, this is where I use park and rides instead of putting two bus stops, its more efficient.

Small field low wealth parks are more effective than trees, you don't have to replant them (you can also plant trees on top of the parks).  No space in this city to do that though, and I didn't really mind the ground pollution.

I can see where no road intersections would increase the buildings, thanks for the tip.

Good luck with the medium wealth. I can't build them because of the pollution. Maybe after a fix (patch).

Thanks for the comment. I got in a habit of using the square zone tool and building 2x1 areas. Time to break a habit.  :)

I was wondering, how do you make those screenshots so far away? Everything can be seen, the whole city.

I can't unzoom so much, even though i have a big monitor (big resolution).

And yeah, give us more screenshots of your big cities, road layout is the key obviously...

Can you post a pic of your zones? I am working on a city that is off to a good start but they were complaining about lack of workers so I dezoned some commercial and switched it to residential, then all of a sudden other buildings in that neighborhood started moving out due to lack of money. They aren't that far away from the next commercial zone but I'm trying to confirm whether or not the bulldozing of the closer commercial zones may have been the reason for the sudden "poverty" problem.

Unlike kgpurrs, I had traffic issues and constant other issues. It is possible if you want to constantly fight the mechanics of the game.

The "No money" issue will cause you to constantly fight the game in order to achieve this. Just my two cents, but it may be better to wait until EA/Maxis addresses this.

Were they complaining lack of medium wealth workers (like bosses and managers)? You can ignore that for purposes of this city. You will go through phases of out of money and out of workers, its perfectly normal and it happened to me from time to time as my city was growing. Try and even things out at 125k, then 300-400k. Once you hit 400k and your city is running smooth you are ready to go 600k.

    dpwy07.jpg

Also if you look at my trains picture, you will see that my residential would drive to the two train stations in the residential/commerce zones and take the train west to the industry to work. Shoppers would walk in the black arrow directions, workers would also walk in the black arrow directions. Walkers would use bus and streetcars.

Streetcars rule. Keep stops to a minimum and don't let all stations run on the same track, give them their own tracks, not shared.

SimCity 4 high density cities looked so much better...  It just doesnt look right in simcicy 2013

Obviously the graphic detail is better.... I just cant put my finger on it... Maybe its the map restrictions forcing you to design your high desnsity cities in a particular way.....  hmm

    Hi All,

I've been trying to figure out how to get my cities bigger, however they seem to max out around the 150k pop mark.  My best effort to date was a 191k pop before the city seemed to bog itself down and started collapsing.  Population dropped and finances crippled it.

What are some of the key's to success?  I know I'm asking a bit but for those of you have got such large cities going could you perhaps dot point your top five tips?

Traffic seems to be the biggest issue (as most people find) where it causes services to fail.  I generally have a lot of public transport but reading through the thread I'm wondering if I'm putting too many stops?

Cash flow?  For the really big cities do you have a specilisation?  I've just been trying to run a balanced city and earn cash from recycling?  Is this enough or do you put in say a processor factory that can earn farily high income?

Thanks in advance for any responses, I realise I've asked a million questions that probably don't have simple answers.

    Cheers

In the options menu, check the box that says 'planning mode' or something similar. It allows you to zoom out further.

My guess is the lack of suburbs and other low density surrounding it. A small cluster of high-rise, then nothing, always looked silly in my opinion wether it's SC4 or this one. A street view in this one looks awesome though because you can't see the edges.

I also had a 600k pop, independent, problem-free city but I decided to add some industries to get the Technophile and then some rich people which decreased my pop by about 150k:

The only transport system in this city are the Streetcars which are mostly for the looks since they dont seems to be doing much.

But one day... A earthquake hit right in the middle of my city and now everyone is doomed.

    What a sad ending...

To me its because you have a sudden forest of tall buildings and then nothingness until the next city. There are no suburbs or small towns in between. Big cities in SC 2013 just look strange because there's no way to make them look organic.
