Does anyone know of any building that houses a very large number of sims

What do you consider a large number? Many of the residential skyscrapers can hold several thousand sims. Are you looking for one in particular?

Okay then to MY knowledge there is no such building. It would be interesting to know if there is one though.

Here is a list of ALL maxis buildings and their capacities. If you want more look on the STEX however the most will probably be like 10k tops. I've never seen more than that.

If you want one made go to the Simtropolis Exchange and the "Bat request thread" and request a massive residential building.

A building of that capacity would quickly become abandoned due to a lack of demand (low desirability). Also, housing the majority of a city's population in one building wouldn't really be very practical. Realistically, to keep the game in proportion, stage 7-8 buildings should only hold between 4000-8000 Sims. The odd extreme high-capacity building will be fine (higher than this), as long as the demand in your city is sustainable.

 

I suggest you have a search for some high stage R$$$ BATs on the STEX. For example, the is a stage 8, with an occupancy of 8504.

Yep a city of 500,000 would break the game. They all have to enter the building in one spot, and all do it at once. Imagine 500,000 people coming home from work at once to one entrance along the road, and the traffic problems that would cause. Thats why such a building cant work.

The largest growable I've found in my city is the Najd Tower, which has a residential cap of 17076. It's a stage 11 CAM building though. There are currently two in my city. One is fairly new (less than 5 years) and is still $$$ with full population. The other is slightly older and is $, fully stocked, and most likely to become abandoned soon. Like said above me, it is fairly difficult to keep a building this large because of demand.

Buildings of that capacity just won't work for the reasons given.  I am curious as to why you might want one?

As other members said, the game does not have buildings that large, not even anywhere close actually. For the good, I would add, as this would be very unrealistic and utterly impossible to grow or maintain.

You mean arcology? These structures are supposed to house a lot of people but the game does not permit it so they are just landmarks. 

There are other arcologies too but right now I can't find them.
