To answer the OP, it's hard to say at this point because the game does have alot of issues. Perhaps once the game is fixed where it should be we will see expansion updates

Major updates?: I don't know but the industry standard would suggest yes.

New buildings?: I don't know but those types of additions make logical sense.

Just bug fixes?: "bug" and "broken" and "WAD" seem to be intermixed and the terms are often loosely defined, only the devs truly know

If you are already excited why do you even care about anybody else and their opinion?  Since you can't really weight anybody's opinion as being more or less reputable or valuable than any of other opinions I'm afraid it's all really just a bunch of hot air, perhaps mine included.  Maybe you need to find somebody who lives near you who will let you play for a few hours, give it a test drive and then make the decision based on your own impression of the game.

My own two cents: I've logged ~156 hours for $59.99.  I can still log another 156 hours for the original $59.99.  There isn't much else I can do for hundreds of hours that costs only $59.99.  Considering that there are essentially an infinite number of ways in which you can value any product you buy, time spent vs money spent is just one of them.  If forum feedback and opinion of the game is how you'll decide, well, good luck, you're going to need it.  :D

I doubt it would follow the release that quickly but I've nothing to substantiate that with.  My hypothesis is that to have an expansion ready so soon after the launch may give the impression that they deliberately withheld finished/nearly-finished aspects from the release version which could have made it in to only charge us more later to get features which could reasonably be construed as core rather than expansion.  It would be a big stick in the eye for the consumer.  Plus, the release of an expansion so quickly implies it was ready to go but it was based on everything in the release working properly.  Since the consensus is that there are some issues which are yet to be addressed (or many depending on who you ask) the expansion would need to be modified and tested accordingly to determine if it still functions as intended given any changes that were made post initial game release.  I guess another theory is that they have an army of people working on it and they'll fix bugs, adjust balance, and develop, market, and sell an expansion all in 6 months.  That would be nice but I won't make take any bets on that one.

I think you are spot-on Board_Marshal.   I highly doubt we will see an internally initiated 'quality' DLC from Maxis for many months down the road, but I wouldn't put it past them to already have certain elements in place for this already.   I do think however that we may see more smaller DLC which like we have been seeing (Nissan/Crest) which is probably tied to already signed contracts and release dates.   Who knows, the DLC we are seeing now (and future DLC) may have been finished months ago, ready to be released at future dates.

I agree.  I would guess the DLC pipeline is more or less independent of issues with the base game or expansions.  To me that would make sense; there's no need to wait on bigger, slower moving processes to be completed but instead they can keep us somewhat more engaged with smaller DLC between the larger releases.  Ya, I bet they have a whole stockpile of DLC and are probably working with countless companies for similar product tie in's, which I don't mind.  If I don't like it I don't have to buy it, simple as that.
