To be fair people also paid a huge price for the rare horse armor in WoW.

People have also paid money to buy a "full unlock" because they didn't want to unlock all the content in their games the free way.

Or how about those RPG folks who chose to buy "level ups" insteaad of grinding in game for free?

 

Maxis probably had the first batch of DLC done before launch.

 

The Llama does speak to me...

 

Anyways the reason for DLC is to offset the price of selling games at a loss or very small profit margins.

If DLC was free, games would be $80+ at release just to make a decent profit.
