anyone still play or maybe have played in the past this gem from the creator of Civilization?

It's an awesome Civilization like game, but on another planet around our nearest star Alpha Centauri, The game Picks up where those of us who beat Civilization with the Space Colonization victory left off.

basically the United Nations Starship Unity, on it's way to alpha centauri suffers a problem mid flight, and ends up dispersing escape pods across a habbitable planet in orbit of Alpha Centauri A.

now you must take control of one of the factions on planet and ensure that humanity survives against both it's self and the hostile life on planet.

it's great beacuse it's like Civ 2 and civ 3 (basically Civ 2.5) but with a sci-fi/futuristic tech tree, and the best part? Loki Games actually ported it to LINUX! though these days copies are hard to find heh, managed to get my self a copy though for around $50 ouch :P

on the up side after a bit of tweaking and updating I got it to work on my linux box, works best in light weight systems like crunch bang due to them having older daemons and such for compatibility with older hardware, that and the lack of use of compositing, works great on my old linux laptop/terminal down in the comp lab, also works in windows, with updates and patches of course, I reccomend to anyone who likes civilization.

Never heard of this game before. Watching gameplay footage I might actually give it a try, it looks very fun.

I actually like the thought of civilization on another planet. I hate playing on something with real world civilizations because it's not very imersive. Oh hey, the Myans actually started their world in Japan, next door to the Spanish... Or even on random maps. It doesn't feel right. This on the other hand... I think I can get into :)

This is a funny coincidence. I've heard the name of the game before, but have never played it. However, recently I started watching a "Let's Play" series of it, and it sure looks interesting!

Finally! A thread dedicated to the greatest turn-based strategy game ever! Heck I love it so much my signature is one of the quotes from the game!

This is a funny coincidence. I've heard the name of the game before, but have never played it. However, recently I started watching a "Let's Play" series of it, and it sure looks interesting!

SMAC is the king of gaming addiction and aside from the old graphics you just get sucked in to this world; planet as they call it or Chiron. Set in the future (2100AD) you pick one of seven human factions, who are divided strictly on ideology, make planetfall on this alien world and try to rebuild humanity (Earth has descended into anarchy, decline and dark ages), or more like your faction's vision for humanity.

Along the way you research futuristic technologies, terraform the planet to support your faction's economy, fight the mindworms -- the planet's native life and brutal little beasties these things are -- find the other factions and their leaders. Wars are fought for power, land grabs, clash of ideologies and all sorts of reasons. As you research more technologies you start to gain unprecedented control over planet, while you can customize each and everyone of your units in the workshop editor.

You guard your faction with infantry, speedrovers, hovertanks, needlejets, copters, gravships, foilships, naval boats, missiles and planet busters. You can commit atrocities like using planet busters, using nerve gas, nerve stapling your population, introducing retroviruses and all sorts. There are secret projects to build which give you special bonuses, abilities and advantages. You conduct social engineering to pick the politics, economics and values most suitable to your preferences.

Finally you win by either cornering the global energy market, diplomatic victory via the planetary council, conquest victory or be the first faction to complete the Ascent to Transcendence project and lead humanity into a new era, where humans evolve and their consciousness is stripped from their bodies and into this massive neural net generated by a planet that becomes sentient (THIS is not a joke!), though this is a voluntary choice.

You will lose months playing this game and remember never leave! The drones need you, they look to you! ;)

Dear sir/madam/whoever will read this!

This profile is now defunct.

Computer problems and issues with accessing my Imageshack account meant My SC4 CJ Scrapbook was lost and utterly irretrievable. This setback put me off SC4 for many months.

Apologies for the inconvenience and for the lost pictures.

But that SC4 itch did not go away and it had to be scratched! I have started afresh with a new account here- The British Sausage

The URS is a spiritual successor to the SC4 CJ Scrapbook.

With this update this will be the last time I visit my original Simtropolis account- admin/mods feel free to remove it or do whatever you need to do. I have no further use for the Ln X (BLANKBLANK) account.

With regards, Miles Saunders-Priem aka. Ln X aka. The British Sausage

It was an excellent game.  I've beaten it many times with several different factions - and on high levels of AI difficulty.  My favorites are the Gaians.  They may look weak on paper, but they are actually one of the strongest due to their other bonuses and abilities with capturing native life, and one can always make military upgrades and secret projects to stregthen them militarily.

you know my favorite faction is actually from alien crossfire, I think the data angels are freaking awesome! a whole faction of hackers and cyberpunks heh ^_^

asside from that I have to say the pirates, and Zarkov are my other 2 favorite factions.

I don't know I never could get into the super capitalism or that crazy Yang heh and in this case playing as aliens doesn't leave one with as much of a fun feeling after wiping out those pesky humans heh.
