All residential in one square?

Good afternoon,

I have searched through the various forum topics, but to no avail...I am asking if it is possible to create one spot in a region of nothing but residential (with some commercial and utilities to keep it going) then another spot in the same region that will host only industrial.  I have figured this has been tried once or twice before, but I was looking for a technical answer as I know most on here are clear veterans of the game.

Every time I start a new city and consider attempting this I fail.  I've got builditis and I just can't help building commercial and industrial and then trade and so on and so forth.  It's a great exercise to try for those with self control.   :D

I think it is possible but just not all of the city. You couldn't have all residential in 1 square(which I'm getting you mean city size) because most Sims would complain about no nearby stores.

EDIT: (Which I'm getting you mean city size)

Yes, I am meaning the city size.  I would put some commercial in the block with the overwhelming residential...just not industrial at all.  I would was thinking this might work with the current state of the game's RCI situation.  A city with all residential would look very nice and one would be able to sculpt a nice neighborhood ( In my case, a nice middle class suburbia).

ive tried it, but traffic was a big issue.

since release theyve increased the amount of traffic that get get on/off those silly highway onramps, but even in a scenario where the road goes through the city I still had issues.

went major mass transport and was able to get somewhere with it, but then had troubles keeping everyone happy and getting the tech level to grow

Actually, and this shouldn't even be possible ...

You can grid out a city, zone the whole thing residential, provide it with ZERO services ... no water, no electricity, no healthcare, no garbage, no sewage, no police, no fire, nothing sharing with another city in the region, in fact, this can be the ONLY city in the region .. provide your residents with NOTHING but streets and space to build  ... and the trucks will show up. And they will build. And they will expand, and density will grow ..

Sit there with your bulldozer to take care of fire rubble abandoned buildings and what not, but they will KEEP building regardless. (note construction in the foreground)

Request for services? Ignore it all. Homeless? We don't care. Education? Why? Nobody has a job anyway! Sewage? How can there be sewage if there's no water! Parks? Those cost money, you've got to be kidding...

We're talking ultimate slum lord here!

Less than 30 minutes after setting up the grid ... I've got over 400,000 residents. If I had sat there longer, it would have kept growing.
Like I said, this shouldn't be possible to do, but it is...

    Tax rate? 1%.

I have tried a few times, I cant get everyone to commute.  The industrial city will actually show the commuters coming in and taking the jobs, but the residential city will will just rack up unemployed with only a fraction of them commuting (like 1000 commuting out, even though the industrial city shows 20k coming in with those being the only two cities in the region).

I get so sick of people posting that "RCI is broken" and posting screenshots like that.  It actually doesnt work.  Yes, you can zone a residential only city, with zero services and no connected cities providing jobs.  It can grow, and pack in a ton of people, then if you pause at the right time and screen shot, you can post your whine about how simcity sucks.  But then unpause it and shortly after it will all fall apart very fast, with abandoned buildings, because RCI does actually work and buildings do respond to demand.

SC5 does indeed have its share of bugs an issues, I do not deny that.  But its just silly that people post about "broken" things that actually are not, we dont see too much of it on Simtropolis, but spend a little time on the EA forums and huge amount of posts are about things like this.  For every 100 times I see that image posted I suspect only 1 or 2 of those people actually tried to do that themselves.  The two "bugs" I always roll my eyes at when I see people complain are this one, and the "fake" population number (as if any prior simcity had "real" numbers, or as if any computer game is "real", who cares what that number on the bottom of your screen says, of course its fake, 1m agents would melt your computer but you still want to build a highly populated city).  "Fake" population is not a bug or game breaking just as such posted screen shots are not bugs, but rather nicely timed screenshots of a city about to fall to peices for being a crappy city.

Likewise, because I guess I am feeling moody after spending too much time reading EA forums today, people asking for their money back because maps are too small or because of online only are seriously annoying as well.  I too would like offline play and bigger maps, but it was made very obvious long before release that this is what we were going to get, complaining that you got what you told you were gonig to get is ridiculous.

My top two are the guy wondering why casinos always seem to get busy after midnight, and the joker moaning about the traffic (at 8am) :)
