Airports don't create regional connections?

I've been playing around trying to get two cities on opposite sides of a large region to become connected. They share no rail, road or water connections. I've built airports in both cities, both with passenger and cargo terminals. Regardless of what else I do, or how long I wait, the two cities do not share a connection when viewing connection information in the region view. Has anyone else had any luck with this?

As far as I know, the only thing airports do is bring tourists, they dont make regional connections.

Nothing connects cities other than roads and rail. Who'd fly from one city to the one next door?

i thought that only a city directly next door could affect your city... for example commuters will not travel across 2 citys to reach a job or school? im not sure if this is true but im sure i read it somewhere.

Well, when there's no road, rail or water by which to travel to a destination, a plane is the only way to do it.

 

I thought it would be a logical workaround for cities in the same region which are not connected to each other in any other way. It was a logical assumption for gifting funds and resources to such cities.

Do ferries also bring tourists only? O_o I thought they work with commuters.

They do allow commuters I think.

Ferries definitely bring in Tourists and commuters.  I've watch people say they came from the airport and are going to work, whether they are or not is up for debate.  I saw a post somewhere similar to this on and I think the consensus was that you have to have a Regional Airport to work as a connecting flight to get to cities in the region that aren't connected by other means.

I've tried this with a lot of otherwise-unconnected cities and I can now say with some certainty that it doesn't work for gifting money/resources.

The guide book says that airports can be used for medium and high wealth commuters and tourists. Airports need to be placed in at least two cities in a region for this to work. Although only a few commuters will use the planes their regular frequency keeps up a steady flow through the day and obviously another means of mass transport is needed from the airport to the commuters final destination. The guide also says that with the addition of a passenger terminal it will significantly increase the capacity of the airport and more runways even more so.

Having said all this I can honestly say that I have never personally ever got airports to work effectively, I'm assuming it is another bug that will need an overhaul to fix.
