Congratulations, mies.  Mystery City #13 is Kassel, Germany.

    Kassel Facts
Kassel was first mentioned in 913 as a fortification at a bridge over the Fulda River.  The town was first said to have city rights in 1189.  By the 1500s Kassel (Cassel until 1926) had grown into a sizeable town and became capital of the state of Kassel-Hesse after Hesse dissolved in 1567.  The city was a center of Protestantism and a refuge for the Huegenots in the 1600s.  Kassel was home to the Brothers Grimm in the 1800s and was where they wrote their fairy tales.  In 1803 Kassel-Hesse became an electorate, but the state was annexed by Napoleon in that year.  The electorate was restored in 1813.  In 1866 Prussia annexed the region.  Under Prussian control, Hesse-Kassel, Nassau, and Frankfurt united, with Kassel no longer the capital.  On October 22, 1943, British bombers destroyed 90% of Kassel's center, killing over 10,000 people and leaving over 150,000 homeless.  Most of the destroyed area was not restored, instead rebuilt in the Modernist style.  Around 200,000 people live in Kassel today.

    Where am I?

    >>Note:  Due to the frequent moving of Simtropolis Picture Hosting, which has proven a frequently unreliable source, all of the pictures are down.  I have no plans to put them back up, then reroute all of the photos to the site, because that would take a really really long time.

Congratulations, Treinreiziger.  Mystery City #13 is Split, Croatia.

    Split Facts

The first historical mention of the Split area came around 293 AD when the Roman emperor Diocletian began work on a palace in what is now the city.  By the 700s, Split was already a thriving walled town, which saved the city from destruction by many a foe; however, the city has been held by the Romans, Byzantines, Croatian factions, Hungary, Venice, France, and Austria-Hungary.  After Austria-Hungary was split apart at the end of World War I, Split became part of Croatia, which was part of Yugoslavia.  When Yugoslavia fractured in the early 1990s, Split became part of the nation of Croatia.  Today, the city is Croatia's second-largest, with a population of around 300,000 or so.

Congratulations, hello_SC4.  Mystery City 16 is Bratislava, Slovakia.

    Bratislava Facts
The history of Bratislava can be traced all the way back to the Neolithic age, as primitive dwellings have been found in the area.  It has since been inhabited by the Celts, who had a sizeable town there, been on the fringe of the Roman Empire, and passed through various hands until 1536, when it became capital of the Kingdom of Hungary.  In 1919, Bratislava became part of Czechoslovakia, then capital of German-occupied Slovakia from 1939 to 1945, then back to Czechoslovakia in 1945, and finally capital of Slovakia in 1993 after that country split in the aftermath of the Velvet Revolution, which ousted Soviet control.

Bratislava lies along the Danube River in far southwestern Slovakia.  Bratislava Castle, shown in this image, is one of Europe's best-preserved fortresses, having been in the city in various forms for at least 2000 years.  Today, around 450,000 people live in Bratislava.
