Hi everyone I'm DinosGG and I've been working on a tutorial gameplay series for how to build a Casino town. My goal for these videos is to walk you through step by step how to build a Casino town, what to do when problems show up and how we're going to be able to fix them. Major issues I will try and tackle include crime, traffic, and the general unstable nature of the Casino income compared to trade income. In no way is this city perfect or the only way to build a city with Casinos in it, but I've had a lot of fun playing it and thought I would share it with all of you. Here's the videos:

Part 1: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLpfUbyBYXk

Part 2: www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBG26loKHwQ

The full playlist: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLpfUbyBYXk&list=PL52nb8KiT9maqTl_snH5IF3aw87MLLFMs&index=1

As always I am open to comments, suggestions, ideas, and good old fashioned fan interaction. If you've had fun watching or learned something useful, don't forget to subscribe to my channel over at youtube.com/DinosGG and you can also follow me on twitch.tv/DinosGG where I broadcast live in 1080P, I try and stream at least once a day and the more fans who are watching the more I will end up streaming! I also do my Youtube recordings over at Twitch so sometimes you can catch a sneak peak on what's coming next for my channel.

If the Electronics town is more your thing don't forget to check out my 7 part tutorial on building a city based on Electronics trade from the ground up, the full playlist: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YK2mhJO6XQc&list=PL52nb8KiT9mZ2S2vuaLkKXgDyO_vYSrdV

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdRelwlU2FE

In part 3 I manage to put down a second gambling house, and I also get my first train station up and running to try and start bringing in more Sims for the casinos.  The second casino I choose to try and maximize on medium wealth stay tuned to see if that pays off for me!

Kinda curious. Does the amount/type of tourists into a casino town depend on the population/status/class of the rest of the region? So if I have an empty region except for my casino city, will it still function or do I need other cities to actually get people in?

From my experience no. I tried building a casino city in a region all by itself and I had tourist coming in on my trains and going to the casino....

  • Yeah the wealth class in your town doesn't matter, the only exception is with commercial buildings, you want these to be the same wealth as the tourists coming in to collect the extra cash from them. From what I can tell with my experience tourists just seem to be created without any influence in your region.

  • Hello DinosGG here and I've got a couple more parts ready for the Casino tutorial city!

    Part 4: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTWr_kTt77g

    Part 5: www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWfknNjP3Xg

    The full playlist: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL52nb8KiT9maqTl_snH5IF3aw87MLLFMs&feature=view_all

In Part 4 I get the Casino HQ placed and I'm gearing up to build the more expensive tier 2 Sleek Casino.  I've still got a long ways to go in my city to get there!  Part 5 I get the department of tourism placed and build the Edificio Copan to boost up my population, I checked my worker and shopper population and this is actually an active building so that's pretty cool.

Curious discovery. So it appears that lodging for tourists gives you no money, the only advantage in keeping them in your city is that they turn around and spend more the next day(which is clearly awesome). That being said, putting down the ploppables for lodging is expensive and/or small quantities. However, commercial buildings can be hotels and have HUGE storage capacity.

  • Wow that is a lot of people packed into that hotel.  I knew the commercial buildings sometimes turned into hotels when they're near a tourist building but I don't think I've ever seen that many in there before.  I wonder if there is a way to force commercial to become a hotel other than bulldozing the building until it builds correctly?

Not sure, but at one point I had 3 all beside each other. Each one had 600-800 tourists in them. Normal lodging costs a fortune and you get so few able to actually stay there. If you could plan this on purpose, you could save thousands, if not tens of thousands, an hour.

  • Hmm that's a good point I've been trying to focus on commercial buildings nearby but I might start bulldozing ones that don't pop up as hotels.  Thanks for the ideas! :)

  • Hi everyone DinosGG here and I have parts 6-10 uploaded and ready to go!  Looking back and watching over these I realize there is still a lot to learn, but it's also a fun exercise in dealing with potential problems that can rise up in your city, how to identify them and how to fix them once you've already spent the cash.

    Part 6: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9N-0D-1N0RI

I get the Sleek Casino plopped down and get it ready to start making me money.  Unfortunately at this point my city isn't laid out properly to support 3 casinos so this money kind of ends up going to nothing, as you'll see later on in the series the Casino isn't very successful.

    Part 7: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8h6vnsXvGI8

In part 7 I make what I later realize to make an even bigger mistake, I place down the Willis tower next to my Sleek Casino.  My thought process behind this was that the landmark would bring people into the town, and then they would want to come gamble.  This is another play that doesn't end up working out too well, and is probably one of the big reasons for most Casino towns flopping is players trying to specalize in both and it doesn't really work too well at first (at least for me).

    Part 8: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjtsiNpZshI

My Street car system is up and running in an attempt to combat the rising traffic.

    Part 9: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN45PHsjgSI

Part 9 turns my attention to the rising crime empire that has been getting a little bit out of control lately, I try and plop down some more police to deal with it without letting my budget run away from me.

    Part 10: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oohnfJ3ZWuo

I upgrade the density on all my buildings and my population starts to soar.  I also end up building another oil power plant to help me deal with the 50% power issue when the oil can't get to my plants in time because of traffic.  Having a 2nd one with full oil so they are alternating shipments will hopefully help my power.  I end up bulldozing a streetcar depot that was supposed to help with traffic, poorly placed mass transit is often worse than no mass transit at all it seems.

In part 11 I finally get the expo center up and running, this is truely a phenomenal building because it runs off of both tourists and residents, and a lot of the time it is just residents coming into this building so it isn't conflicting with the casinos (at least that I can tell).  Bringing in an average of 100k net profit isn't too bad!

Hey, like both series, thanks for videos I've learned a lot from them.

I had problems in my casino city becouse 90% of my hotels were far away from casinos so almost nobody was in casinos. Few hours after destroying all hotels in bad locations my casinos were full again. So keeping your commercial (expect hotels) away from casinos in one thing, but keeping all hotels close to gambling is another that you have to keep an eye on.

It's really a shame that there isn't some kind of hotel zone. It makes no difference what factory we have in industry zone, but it makes huge difference what type of commercial building it is and we have no control over it other than destroying time after time till we get a right one and than it can change to something else while its upgrading to higher $$ or density (I was bitching about that on your youtube channel as well :D )

One more thing. In both series you put Edifico Copan. This buidling is bugged. I've noticed no increas in taxes after I added this buidling so I went to sandbox mode and made some tests.

I had 0 ppl in my city (only made a house to make power plant working and than destroyed it). After buidling Edifico Copan my population was 2550, but I had 0 income from taxes. Population map showed only 1100 ppl in that buidling (the value that is in description), 1000 of them were workes and 100 students.

I also checked tourism map (in real game, no sandbox) and there were 0 tourist in this building so it doesn't seems that it works as tourism attraction.

So it looks like Edifico Copan gives you 0 tax payers, 1000 workes, 100 students, some random number in population tab, no tourists and costs 350$/h.

  • Hey DinosGG here and I have part 12 and 13 finished.

    Part 12: www.youtube.com/watch?v=kji0iocyQQU

    Part 13: www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3mxKqljOq8

For part 12 I would like to give a big thanks to Lionus23 over on the EA forums, he has a pretty nice write up about some mechanics of tourism and traffic, and how commercial really functions in your city.  Basically I thought that Casinos would be a higher tourist draw and commercial would give them something to do afterwards.  Yeah that doesn't happen they just go to the closest building.  So I have to do some rezoning to try and make the casino more profitable and eliminate traffic.

Part 13 has me working overtime dealing with crime and fire, will I ever build a school district??  I also plop down a freight depot to get rid of industrial traffic, since it appears the trade depot transports your freight via magic, there are never any trucks leaving or entering this building that I can see with the trade overlay and the freight numbers keep changing.

Hey, I watched parts 14 & 15, very nice job getting your city back to life, a lot of ppl would give up on it. I've never tought about destroying this initial modul in ferry terminal, that should be solution for this long wait time that they often have.

It's really interesting how landmarks are bad for casinos. I think that stuff like expo center and later on pro stadium and sydney opera still is a good  thing as this brings a ton of customers that can go to casino later.

I have few ideas that may help your city, let me know what you think about them.

Add few more casinos, you are bringing a lot of tourists but they aren't spending too much money in casinos. Good places for them would be:

    1. Next to bus terminal - all tourists that come by bus are put in terminal so building gambling house right next to it works great

    2. At the entrence of your city - it's almost always a good place to put a casino.

    3. Most imporant location - right next to expo center, aside from expo you have ferry and train stations there it's really great place for casino.

I would put gambling houses with beds for low and medium wealth + moduls to increase capacity of gamblers in locations 1 and 2. Those gambling houses in right locations can bring as much as 20-30k a day. In 3 I think that sleek casino would work however that is always risky, but guys coming from ferries are mid and high wealth and on trains low and mid (i think, not sure about that) + sims from expo center that makes a lot of customers.

I've read somewhere on this forum (unfortuatly can't find a topic and don't rember poster name) that tourists coming to your city will go to casino with bedrooms, hotels, commercials, casinos without beds in that order. So you want to put your casinos next to all entrances to your city.

You have small fire station right next to the big one so you can buldoz one of them. I'm not sure if you really need this big one, now that your traffic is improved and sims are more educated.

DinosGG, can I give you a small suggestion to keep editing your original post with all your links to the youtube videos.   This way people don't have to search though all your posts to find links to the videos.

Though I'm no expert in casinos, I do have a successful casino city running with 3 sleek casinos, stadium and expo center and other tourism.  I haven't played that city in long time but I'm sure with more hours into it, it could be progressed further.

If I can make some suggestions, I see some major problems with your city.

When you design a casino city, you need to really focus on several things.

    1. Design a city to maximize traffic flow while minimizing traffic.

    2. Design a city to maximize tourist influx and flow

Maximize traffic flow while minimizing traffic

The whole design of your city has to be designed around how to get people in/out of your city with minimal traffic issues.  Once you start placing down things alike Expo Centers and later Stadium, this is really going to increase your traffic.   Looks like already you are facing traffic issues.   Your city will be absolute gridlock with a stadium.

While you have mass transit options already, you really have to make sure that your streets are clear of vehicle traffic before you factor in any major tourism.  I found that I can bring in lots of people with trains etc, but for some reason after they stay the night at hotels etc, they may take vehicle to airports or drive out.  They don't always leave the same way they come in.

First get your city in order.   Jobs vs workers, shoppers vs buyers.   People will drive for jobs etc.  Balance your city the best you can to get rid of traffic.   For jobs, your city infrastructure including casinos and some Commercial will probably support your entire Residential population for workers.   I would get rid of Industry completely but this would depend completely on jobs/workers.  The people detail panel will tell you this.  It’s been proven you do not need Industry for Commercial.

Design a city to maximize tourist influx and flow

You need to design your city to maximize tourist traffic flow.  When they come in via train, the first thing they should see is a line of casinos.   Don't let them get to anything else first, like shopping.    When tourists leave casinos, they can head to event centers, after event centers back to casinos or hotels.    The farther they have to walk/commute to their destination is bad.   Watch to make sure your tourists aren’t sitting in bus stops waiting for buses.   Watch the tourists data layers and find the optimal spots place building to ‘herd’ people.

Finally, when you start to really push things, make sure you have lots of cash on hand.  I mean lots.  If purely based on casinos and tourism, one change can throw off tourist patterns in how many come into your city each day.    I started tweaking things in my casino city and easily burned through a million cash before I get things settled down again.

You are at the point right now where your casino city is starting to take off.  As it progresses and grows, keep these things in mind.  Keep it up!

  • Great ideas, I'm not sure why I never built a casino next to the bus terminal.  I'll be sure to add one in there and see how it works out.  I actually tried putting a house next to the entrance of my city but the servers crashed and I think I forgot to put it back up.  So if one isn't there the next time I load the city it was supposed to be!

TuPhat I have a playlist at the top of the thread, that link lets you watch every single video in the series as soon as they are uploaded, even before I make a post about them.  Not all forums let the user edit their posting and to avoid creating a huge wall of text, I'd rather place a few here and there than turn my initial post into a 20,000 character brick wall.

  • Here comes the next part!

    part 14: www.youtube.com/watch?v=51m3Ob3ghXE

I finally get my poor poor sims some book learning in their very own town. This should help somewhat deal with all the crime and fire I've been having in ways that just simply adding more cars isn't very efficient at dealing with! I was really trying to get by without building any education infrastructure but the lack of region play is really crippling me and forcing me to build schools. :(

  • I've got two more parts over at Youtube now!

    Part 15: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxkhHjA7TfA

    Part 16: www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5Wzb9bDyP8

part 15 I finally decide to get rid of the Willis tower, I originally thought this would be drawing in more tourists to go over to my casino but it just isn't working out that way.  Oh well it made some decent money while it was up at least.

For part number 16 I decide to start hunting out hotels and trying to force my commercial to develop into hotels.  Anybody know why you can't just zone a hotel?  It's a completely different building that runs completely different from regular commercial buildings.  Residential and industrial are all the same (at least so far as I know).

I have a city that only gets about 800 tourists a day and to my great horror every single commercial zone in the city has turned into a hotel.

I'm having to FORCE them to not be hotels (by limiting their size) because I have my regular residents crying foul about places to shop.

  • Hello everyone DinosGG here and I've got a few more parts of the series here for you!

    Part 17 :

In part 17 I try out some new positions for the gambling houses that I originally had success with.  It seems really weird that I STILL haven't broken the 100,000 requirement for the Gambling HQ quest, this city is so much harder to build than electronics was!  We will get there though.

    Part 18:

This is actually the first part where any of the gameplay gets skipped.  So basically what happened here was I kept trying to record and about 5 minutes into the recording I would disconnect from the server, which pauses the in game clock (why the clock runs server side is beyond me).  For those of you thinking ahead, this will of course pause the expo center showtime which is where a lot of my cash is coming from right now.  This also pauses casino activity (casinos seem to be a lot more active at night).  In between the start and this final recording I basically start trimming out my population I cut roughly 40k people from my city to try and trim down traffic and city services required.

Thanks again everyone for watching this series is really going a lot longer than I thought it was going to.  Getting the Casinos built up is so much more difficult than it was to get Electronics trade up and running.  If you'd like to check out that series it's over at

Stay tuned for part 19 coming up soon!

    Part 19:

    Full casino playlist:

In this video I work on balancing my low and medium wealth workers to ensure all my shops and casinos are running at full capacity.  I also do some traffic updates and I'm still at it for trying to get the Sleek Casino fully profitable.

I'll be working on some more parts tomorrow, don't forget you can subscribe on my channel youtube.com/DinosGG to be updated as soon as new videos are released!

    Part 20:

    Part 21:

In part 20 I decide to take a tip from one of the viewers and place down the opera house!  In order to do this I have to bulldoze my expo center and if you've been watching the previous videos then you know how much money this has been making for me and what a risk this is!  Hopefully it ends up paying off and not bankrupting me, which you'll see in part 21!

I'll have parts 22 and 23 up tomorrow so stay tuned!

Not 100% sure but I think it works like that: sims go to expo/ opera/ stadium after show they want to go take a nap and than go gamble or spend their cash somewhere. So if you can put high wealth hotel close to opera it should help to keep them in the city. I don't think that moving opera and putting casino between it and boats will change anything, they already have a casino right next to opera so if they want to go there they would.

Other option would be adding beds to your casino but I don't know how you can get 100k$ profit right now, I think you would have to take a lot of steps back and refocus on gambling houses and low - medium wealth tourists.

I'm still trying to get a successful casino city and it is big challenge, probably a lot of troubles comes from bugs but there are some ppl that have very profitable casino cities so its doable.
