on Kickstarter, besides Civitas? I am looking forward to Civitas but I don't know if they can reach their stated funding goal: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1584821767/civitas-plan-develop-and-manage-the-city-of-your-d

Are there any other city simulators indie groups have been developing have a good chance of being successful?

I sent a suggestion to Civitas, use the open source model for the simulation engine. There have been some attempts at this (OpenCity, LinCity). The original SimCity is now open source but under the control of EA. I doubt it is of any value now, very old code.

On a global level, I sure there are alot of smart folks out there who would love to work on a simulation engine if it was open source.

To produce a product, the interface could be propritary.

I suggest you take a look at Synekism

http://www.synekism.com/

Synekism is an attempt at a modern city simulator rooted in procedurally

generated content. The project was started in 2010 to address some frustrations
with the city simulation video game genre. It is actively developed on
and currently in a purely alpha-experimental stage. Updates on the project are
posted on the first of every month. Note that work on this project is more
or less done by one person so progress will be slow, but steady.

The game is a sandbox where control is not explicit but
indirect. The player can designate residential, commercial, industrial, and government
zones and watch them grow, instead of explicitly plopping each building manually.
The game tends to lean towards macro-management.

The key features of Synekism include grid less 3D environments and procedurally generated
buildings. The lack of a grid results in total freedom when zoning and building roads
allowing for more realistic looking cities. Procedurally generated buildings allows
for more visual variability. Instead of querying a finite list of static models, a
building is generated uniquely upon creation using local as well as city-wide conditions.

I believe Civitas is the game to create a worthy successor to 4 if anything does. Mr Smith's report sounds highly encouraging, and I would strongly recommend everybody chip in and help that project. They have professional experience and know what they're doing, whereas BoomTown is going to struggle just to get a start.

I hope they reach their goal.

Hi Charizard and anyone else reading this,

I've made a thread of modern city builder games to give some perspective on the history of the genre and related games.  Right now it seems Boomtown, Synekism, Virtucity, Civitas, Cities In Motion 2 and a few others from the independent list are going on.

A few other city builder games in related genres are also in development such as Banished for a self-sustaining village theme, Medieval Mayor for an ancient/historical theme, and Clockwork Empires for a fantasy/steampunk theme.

I suggest they change the name Civitas, in France Civitas is an extreme right-wing religious coalition, about to be disbanded but still. :|

Civitas is a fine name. It is the Latin word for Citizen, if I am not mistaken. Because some right-wing nutjobs started to use that word for their group does not mean that the word is no longer good. If some mass-murderer decided to call his movement "peace and prosperity," would those words suddenly become taboo?

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

there is alot of city builder games been worked on, but finding one that does zoning and production and has similiar features to the new simcity along with complex simplicity will be tough

And frankly, itll be a long time until any of these games see either a graphical update ( Synekism ) or even a release ( Civitas if it doesnt reach its goal of 250,000$ )

So unfortantly. were stuck with what we have for the next 6-7 months or maybe EA will give in and fix simcity 2013's problem's

Im impatient i know :P but these projects are exciting, but what were stuck with now and the modern times just doesnt fit anymore and becoming stale

Boomtown will be the true successor to SC4 IMO. True, it's a long way off yet, but these things will take time. Funding will always be a problem, so the sooner that Buggi sorts out some kind of account for donations, the better. It is a game that is being developed by our community, for our community, and I think it deserves the backing from all members of Simtropolis. If we all get behind it, and donate or help in some way or other, the sooner this Pipe Dream will become a reality. So c'mon people....join the group and get in on it . Let's show EA/Maxis how to really make a city sim game.

Well since this thread has had a post in the last month I might as well post here. I am working on a game slowly with no sight of a release or even a name however I am using sc4 the major influence.

I think Civitas is dead. The moderators of the forums on what passed for the site Quixotically defended the developers' inability to post even a couple sentences to let people know it was still being developed over the last six months since they said the "beta" would be opening soon. As of a couple weeks ago they've pulled the plug on the forum because of a lack of news.

Civitas is dead alright, the forums have vanished completely. My project Virtucity is slowly advancing with the help of a fellow GMCer. Probably the best place for new info on the project is this http://gmc.yoyogames.com/index.php?showtopic=439155 at the game maker community boards.

Right now I am working with another member to improve the UI and make smoother transition from topdown to dimetric perspective views in-game.

I've started some basic 3d modelling which you can see in the thread. As for when the game will be finished I really couldn't say but I think if you checked the board in a year's time there would be good chance of it having advanced a great deal
