an update to the problems

We are working hard to resolve a problem that is at the heart of the issues which some players have reported.

Namely:

Trading not working consistently

Unable to load/claim city errors

Getting stuck in a loop in the tutorial

To that end we are currently rolling out a server update which we believe will improve performance considerably. This will involve restarts over the next 4-5 hours across all of our current severs. Minor player impact may occur, such as trading not working consistently and the region wall not working occasionally.

We appreciate your continued patience and support while this fix is being deployed.

The only problem with Maxis is their fixes are like whack-attack with a 14lb sledge hammer.

Just as they hammer one bug, they break something else.

This isn't a new thing. It happens all the time, especially with MMO's and other games with an always-online requirement. That being said, this really sounds like the kind of thing they should have fixed BEFORE release.

you're right.  It's one of the downsides of a server-based game that people who say "oh i don't care" aren't even thinking about.

The problem here is that Maxis has this kind of effect even on single player offline games (see The Sims 3).

If Maxis can do this to Single-Player games, I don't even want to know what SimCity 2013's going to be like.

Most modern MMOs dont have the problems you describe anymore. In fact my last 4 MMO launches have been smooth. The bad starts have been from MMOs years ago.

You don't play WoW, or overlook some problems. Often fixes to problems create some other problems, though it's nowhere as game breaking as it seems with Sim City.

Btw, which MMOs are you refering to ? SWTOR had a lot of problems with their servers, as did Diablo 3 even if it's not a MMO, and they are respectively 2 and 1 year old. Of course MoP didn't have many problems, but WoW is eight years old, that's hardly a new start.

Maxis does not develop The Sims 3. The studio that has been making games for TS3 for the past several years has nothing to do with the Maxis Studio, which has been working on SimCity only.

What have been your last 4 MMO launches? I've had a very different experience with my last 4 MMO launches, with 3 of them in 2012 (Guild Wars 2, TERA Online, Diablo 3). I know Diablo 3 isn't an MMO but it is very relevant as it was the launch of an online-only game with a huge following.

If MMOs don't break one thing every time they go to fix something else, then how come ten year old MMOs still get patched once a month?

Fact of the matter is, breaking one thing to fix another is extremely rampant in programming. It's not acceptable, it's not ideal, but it's certainly not a problem contained to Maxis...

I suggest you recheck your information, Maxis (Formerly The Sims Studio, Formerly EA Redwood Shores) develop both The Sims series AND SimCity 2013.

This is a video of the Sims 3 70's 80's and 90's stuff loading screen:
