Best Way to Deal with Riots?

One of my cities was getting too rich and I didn't want all the c$ and I-D jobs to disappear being replaced with HT and offices so I reserved an area to have R$ and at max R$$. To do this I resisted putting schools in that area, only a modest police station. It became a very bad neighborhood. After some complaining for some months I started to experience frequent riots. Then to make it worse, I suffered a "slider bug" incident and they got worse. I overcame the slider bug but still get periodical riots breaking out. To be fair, I get a lot of complaints about school strikes from certain schools but they are no where near the bad neighborhood.

The riots make me laugh and annoy me at the same time. These hooligans actually destroyed most of a city block without me noticing. Sometimes I get the riot alarm and cannot find the perpetrators because some buildings are blocking the street view. When I finally find them flipping over cars and lighting fires, i dispatch some police but most of the time they stop about a block away like they're scared, meanwhile the rioters are just stomping out cars right in front of them. So I continue to move the squad markers closer to them. It seems like the markers have to be place a certain way so the cops can ram into them. But I'm just guessing. They almost burned down one of my movie theaters. I got a fire truck there in the nick of time.

I feel like my efforts to stop the riots are sloppy. Is there a proven method to deal with this effectively and quickly?

Here is a pic showing evidence. I didn't see them till it was too late for these properties

Interesting experiment. I guess you need more police and more prisons. At least that seems to be the choice in Simcity 4: Either pay for education, or pay for police.

By the way, in JBSimio's School Pack Three you can find a combination school/jail :D.

how you avoid that problem is zone alternating 1x3 zones of low and middle density (R$ & R$$)

so larger R$$$ houses can not spawn

in a 8x8 block (street - 8 squares - street east-west & street - 8 squares - street north-south)

there are 16 1x3 buildings and two 2x4 buildings

second, place police stations so the circle coverage zones overlap so your ENTIRE city is covered with police protection

1x3 and 2x4 buildings: (roads not shown) or you can make it a 8x6 block and eliminate the 2 R$$$ zones

Problems with police may mean you need the ' mod.  Also, do not ever lower police or fire funding.  Leave them at default.  Enjoy your riots.

This is the first time I experienced riots like this. I do have the "Crime Doesn't Pay" mod and I always have plenty of police and civic amenities. But this time I am experimenting with a mixed wealth large city so I expect some complaining and the occasional riot in those areas where I am causing poorer conditions on purpose.

What I am really interested in is how others actually squash the rioters not how to avoid them. I would like to hear methods used by other users who experience this. Once a riot breaks out, I want to get them under control immediately before I lose a building that grew in a perfect spot (didn't want to lose the strip club on the corner....not ploppable). Besides, I find the riots very entertaining.

As I stated in the first post, I dispatch the police using the squad markers but not feeling like I really know how to dispatch them effectively. Anyone have skills in dealing with riots?

I use a "more riots" mod which means you have riots anywhere below +80 mayor rating. the idea is that since most people are competent enough not to ever see riots, the mod makes it a little more interesting. I lost the plugin and couldn't delete it (lol) and experience riots almost non-stop in the early stages of a city, so I would consider myself a seasoned reactionary.

to put it simply, you need at least two, ideally three police dispatches per riot crowd. two on either side to hem them in, and another placed directly on top of the crowd. you'll see them all glitching out in a circle facing away from the police, and they won't properly disperse until you move the police somewhere else. it's an annoying system sometimes because it's hard to tell if a crowd has dispersed. And quite often you get "ghost" riot crowds, where the ambient effects of dust and rioters haven't yet appeared, but they can still set fires and throw petrol bombs. in this case press the "go to disaster" sign and spam police everywhere, before pulling them all back and repeating if they don't disperse.

So when I cannot find them, it could be a "ghost" crowd huh? LOL I did just what you described in that case. I spammed police throughout the whole area. Once I found them heading down to the commercial avenue trying to burn down a Starbucks away from where all the cops were. It seems the squads come from the same direction and get all backed up behind the first ones on the scene. I try to scatter them out then try to zero in from different directions moving the squad markers strategically.

I think you just need to surround them with cops on all sides. What the police do is they deploy riot lines when they get near the area, which are pretty useless if the rioters can just run. But if you have cops behind them, the riot will run right into the cops and be smashed.

In 9 years and a half of Simcity, I have never experienced a single riot.

I have to ask you how you can get to this point. I never understood why Police was in the emergency menu in the first place. :|

I second all of this.  But maybe it's because I always keep my mayor rating as high as possible.

Same here, and I really don't pamper my Sims all too much.

Whoa, I just noticed... Linoa06, greetings from Cologne to Cologne! :)

They made riots too hard to get; the bar should have been set so that any area with a negative mayor rating has a chance of riots (good middle ground between the base game where all Sims are tranquilized, vs riot mod where people will burn down the neighborhood if their favorite TV show isn't on that night).

I know what you mean. I bought SC4 back in 2003 and this week was my first riot experience. As I stated in earlier post, I always aimed for good mayor ratings and tried to satisfy all my sims. But I got tired of loosing all the variety in my industrial areas and C$. It seems the more I try to satisfy all the sims, all the industry turns I-HT. So I purposely made an area without schools. I didn't intend to get riots but they showed up. Also I'm sure that slider bug added to the madness. My budgets were probably at zero for some months before I noticed.  I totally ignored the strikes going on at some schools and a police station. I suddenly got a message pop up saying something like "criminals rejoice, Cops on Strike" Shortly after that I had one of the biggest laughs playing this game in a long time. I think having a highly dense population with less cops in the city play a role in getting the right conditions for riots. However, I also noticed the riots ONLY happened away from the R$$$ neighborhoods. Only in that particular area where I held back on schools and civic amenities.

Yesterday I put more police stations in the rich neighborhoods and all has been quiet since except a couple of schools who's sliders cannot go no further to the right. I still have plenty of space to develop more residents. I'm going to let the population grow another 50-100,000 before I put another police station and see what happens. I can say one thing though...my experiment is working! I have plenty of C$ in my local commercial zones (hate seeing all offices growing like weeds) and I-M and I-D is making a come back providing more jobs for my R$ and R$$. I have a large commercial city growing where all the big offices are springing up to the south so the CO$$ and CO$$$ are still being satisfied.

So maybe you can try putting your budgets down to zero and demolish a few police stations and see how mad your sims can get.

Maybe the riots occured because your Sims heard of the new SimCity2013? It certainly worked here on Simtropolis... :P

I remember hearing about riots in a thread a while ago, and wondered why I hadn't heard of them, and after some experimenting I found it's darn near impossible to get riots unless you're actively trying. and even then it takes a good half an hour to see one. the conditions are ridiculous; you have to let your mayor rating drop to below 20 or something like that (even one civic building will prevent this from happening) and there can't be any effective police stations (riots are like fire; they won't happen inside the radius of a proper police station as far as I know). Even a casual player would never let it get this bad intentionally.

even after all this I went into the kitchen, boiled some rice, came back and there was only one tiny riot. my only guess is that riots were designed to appeal to people who enjoy using the disasters, or just like making really crappy, seedy cities. but even so...
